Although second language listening has become a rather active area of research in the past ten years, some topics such as listening fluency development and extensive listening (EL) have not received ...much attention. The purpose of the present study is to examine the levels of listening support that might be needed to facilitate L2 learners’ listening fluency development. Sixty-nine EFL college students completed a full intervention through one of the three modes: (1) listening only (LO), (2) reading only (RO), and (3) reading while listening plus listening only (RLL). Ten level-1, 10 level-2 and 8 level-3 (audio) graded readers were used as the study materials within three 13-week periods. Listening tests were given before the intervention (pre-test) and after they finished each level of the texts (post-tests 1, 2 and 3). The research questions addressed effect sizes of the scores’ changes from the pre-test to each of the post-tests in each group on their comprehension of practised and unpractised texts. The results show that in comprehending the practised texts, the LO and RLL groups could comprehend the more complicated texts at faster speech rates and also maintain higher levels of comprehension. When listening to the unpractised texts, the RLL group could do as well as they did on the practised texts, but the LO group could process the more difficult texts at faster speech rates without decreasing their comprehension levels. As predicted, the RO group performed poorly on the tests. Pedagogical implications for facilitating the effectiveness of extensive listening practice are discussed.
Building on previous listening strategy research, the author aimed to explore the differences between Chinese high-proficiency listeners (HLs) and low-proficiency listeners (LLs) on their strategy ...use, problems, and motivation in native language (L1) listening. It involved 1,290 Grade 7 and 1,515 Grade 9 students. Both quantitative and qualitative methods, including a listening comprehension test, questionnaires, and interviews, were adopted. The findings indicated that HLs possessed more types of strategies and used strategies more frequently and effectively than LLs. HLs not only reported fewer listening problems but also had a better awareness of listening problems and use of problem-solving strategies than LLs. Both HLs and LLs agreed with the importance of listening but showed little interest in doing listening tasks. The similarities and differences between the findings of this study and those of second-language listening research and implications for planning effective instruction to enhance native language listening proficiency are discussed.

Listening comprehension plays a key role in language acquisition, yet little is known about the variables that contribute to the development of second language (L2) listening ability. This study ...sought to obtain empirical evidence for the impact of some of the learner variables and the degree to which they might predict success in L2 listening. The learner variables of interest included: first language (L1) listening ability, L1 vocabulary knowledge, L2 vocabulary knowledge, auditory discrimination ability, metacognitive awareness of listening, and working memory capacity. Data from 157 Grade Seven students in the first year of a French immersion program indicated a significant relationship among most of the variables and L2 listening ability. A number of path analyses were then conducted, based on hypothetical relationships suggested by current theory and research, in order to uncover relationships between the variables in determining L2 listening comprehension ability. The best fit to the data supported a model in which general skills (auditory discrimination and working memory) are initially important, leading to more specific language skills (L1 and L2 vocabulary) in determining L2 listening comprehension. In positing a provisional model, this study opens up useful avenues for further research on model building in L2 listening.
This article presents our attempt to move beyond both developmental and Reggio Emilia guidelines for listening. We situate our efforts within our wounded colonial context—what is now called Victoria, ...British Columbia. Our effort is to begin to consider listening within unequal spaces of power, and to wonder what ethics such arrangements might require. In our engagements with clay and stones with the children, we noticed the sound the stones and clay made. In this article, we work with several stories of our investigations into sound, which have helped us to think about the complexities of listening in childcare spaces.
Based on the day-to-day care of patients in the Pain Clinic of a Brazilian cancer hospital (INCA), this article seeks to examine the consequences upon the psychic dimension of the fact of pain being ...intimately linked to the body. Almost always profoundly affected by the illness, the concept of the subject's own body deeply modifies this identification. This not only causes suffering, but also prejudices oncological treatment. Conceptualizing the body from a psychoanalytical standpoint, this article emphasizes the importance of language and the spoken word in its constitution, as the body perceived by psychoanalysis does not coincide with the biological body. The importance of listening to what the patients say is therefore seen as an important tool in the work of professionals in an oncological institution. Two possible positions regarding professionals dealing with the imminence of death and the finitude of life are then outlined. The first is refraining from being affected by the finite and perishable dimension of life, feeling pity for the patients, resigning and distancing oneself from their predicament. The second involves listening to the patients with compassion, acknowledging the inexorable finitude common to all, such that they may not suffer alone and share some of the horror they are experiencing.
...in these areas, RSD were significantly negatively correlated with comprehension scores for the high-complexity condition (Fig. 3). ...this difference of reproducibility was almost totally ...explained by their variability of task performance. ...activation variability may not be intrinsic to the disease 1 but is linked to task performance, suggesting that there is nothing intrinsically associated with the disease that precludes such longitudinal studies in this population.
This conceptual paper introduces the concept of civic listening to augment organizational listening theory and practice. Drawing from critical theorists Arendt and Mouffe, it centers pluralism, ...agonism, deliberation, and reflection as central to listening and delineates the functions and values of civic listening to add to existing architectures. In doing so it provides additional guidance to help organizations (1) listen for what might be challenging for leaders to hear, (2) ensure values of deliberation and pluralism are enacted in listening contexts, and (3) help better triangulate organizational awareness among a diverse constellation of other organizations and stakeholders. Building on organizational listening scholarship that addresses the potential for the concept's contributions to democratic society, this new perspective points toward deeper, more nuanced, and more equitable organizational engagement in civic discourse and firmer ground for contentious issue involvement. It introduces five critical values within an architecture of civic listening to guide practice: "other" orientation, pluralistic engagement, harmony over consensus, reflective processes, and social problem-solving focus.
