This article deals with curse tablets against thieves, also known as ‘prayers for justice’. In the first part, I offer a short introduction to the topic and the scholarly debate surrounding the ...definition of this type of inscription, concluding that a more emic approach can help us understand the complex nature of a technology that, far from being monolithic, evolved over time and space. In the second part, I compare the literary and epigraphic evidence (in Greek and Latin), pointing out the similarities and differences between our different sources of information. Finally, I turn to the handful of Latin curse tablets from Roman Britain in which the stolen object's value is divided between the principal and the invoked gods. In my view, this type of transaction should be analysed as a new take on the more traditional votum, in which legal concepts such as obligatio or ownership also play an important role. By establishing an almost contractual agreement with a deity, practitioners obtained not only divine assistance but also tangible evidence of the god's participation.

The paper focuses on paradoxical aspects of P. O. Hviezdoslav’s personality. The poet – although considered a central figure in the Slovak literary canon, institutionally accepted authority and ...emblem of national culture – remains “rather unpopular and basically unread” and “incomprehensible”. Slovak literary studies, especially before 1989, praised Hviezdoslav’s folk realistic orientation – especially in his “peasant themes”. This narrative foregrounded his folk realistic orientation which was supposed to make his poetry more accessible to the common reader. By means of synecdochal interpretation of fragments of his work, the author of the article shows that Hviezdoslav’s peasant themes – by their expressive, formal and genre qualities – do not display so much a folk realistic influence as the poet’s tendency towards verbal extensiveness, stylistic “exclusivity,” mannerism, Parnassism and respect for classical models. The paper focuses on how these features influence the real status and reception of Hviezdoslav’s poetry today.
A potential inspiration for Dracula by Bram Stoker is discussed. Speculation about the "real-world" analogues for the figures in Bram Stoker's Dracula has been a favorite scholarly undertaking: from ...the once-popular claims of Vlad III being the basis for the Count himself to anecdotal stories that Stoker lifted names from his coworkers and hotel managers, critics, scholars, and fans of the novel have long enjoyed guessing as to who among Stoker's innumerable contacts might have provided grist for his literary mill. One figure for whom there has been little discussion of real-world templates, however, is R. M. Renfield, the psychiatric patient who falls under Dracula's sway. This character may have his origins in the behavior of an actual psychiatric patient housed in St Patrick's Hospital in Dublin, Ireland. This identification follows current evidence that Stoker's brother, Dr Willian Thornley, played a significant role in the novel's genesis.
The Arabic learning of poet John Donne. Donne read the medieval Latin translation of the Qur'an and was familiar with other Arabic texts. English divines like Donne were interested in studying Arabic ...because it provided insights into ancient translations of the Bible. However, the materials available for studying Arabic were limited during Donne's time. Despite encountering difficulties, Donne persisted in his study of Arabic. Several references in his sermons indicate his knowledge of Arabic, particularly in relation to the Penitential Psalms. Donne likely obtained information from various sources, including polyglot Psalters and comparative dictionaries. He also quotes directly from Arabic paraphrases of Scripture, possibly from a commentary by Paul Tarnow that included a Latin translation of an Arabic paraphrase by Thomas Erpenius. Donne transforms narrow philological points into poetic and spiritually significant insights.

...while allegory is DeLoughrey’s primary operative term used to energize her ambitious aims, it is also one of her objects of study: “The recognition of this seemingly new disjunctive relationship ...between the human and the planetary environment represents a crisis of ecological modernity in which allegory appears as one of its primary narrative records. ...Allegories of the Anthropocene offers, both directly and performatively, a remarkably sophisticated notion of allegory itself. ...the volume’s natural arc, which ends with an “ethics of care” (196), leaves the reader with a sense of well-being and purpose.
