Historical events, changing social events, political innovations, social relationships, technical innovations, new trends in fashion, sports, nutrition, etc. – as language participants, we ...communicate on all these topics and use a large number of words and fixed phrases. In everyday language use, different questions arise. For example, you might want to know if it is appropriate to use a word, or what the story is behind a phrase. Or one hears or reads a word that one does not yet know or about which one is unsure how to spell or pronounce it or what to consider when using it. In such cases, it is best to look it up in a dictionary.
Loan words generally have a bad reputation – but it is hard to imagine the language without them anyway. The reason for this ambivalence seems not least to be the fact that foreign borrowings, mostly ...in statu nascendi, may cause hostility because of the disruption of the usual resting position, while their numerically serious catalytic role in the establishment of target language equivalents – usually with the disappearance of the borrowings connected – mostly goes unnoticed. This discrepancy is summed up as the dialectic of conflict, and according to Spitzmüller (2005) as the "incompatibility of two divergent discourses": "It shows that language in public is more than a medium of communication: it functions as a collective ›social symbol‹ and as a means of constituting identity and alterity. Metalinguistic discourse is therefore never exclusively related to language. Social fears, social conflicts and therefore a given socio-historical situation always stand behind it."

This paper presents a number of additions and corrections to the corpus of etymologies published in Irina Nikolaeva's "A Historical Dictionary of Yukaghir" (De Gruyter, 2006). The focus of the paper ...is on internal Yukaghir etymology rather than on search for loanwords or long-range cognates.
The paper builds on the early detection by Carl Meinhof of one or two Arabic loanwords in Nama (Khoekhoe, Khoe), and explores the possibility of other borrowings, from not only from Arabic but also ...languages of the Cushitic family. A context in which such borrowings could have occurred is provided through the presentation of historical evidence that suggests, for the first time, an actual connection between speakers of Khoekhoe languages - and some of the early Shona states involved in the early Indian Ocean trade along the east coast of Africa, where foreign partners included speakers not only of Arabic but also Persian, Hindi, and Malay. Two sets of additional borrowings that have been found (from Arabic, and Cushitic) are then presented and discussed. Different distribution patterns in the case of borrowings shared with various Ntu languages are argued to suggest more than one stage in the emergence of the modern Khoe languages, while a particular connection is identified, for the first time, with languages specifically of the Mozambican and Madagascan coasts (as opposed to the Swahili coast). This evidence suggests that the earliest interactions behind some of the borrowings occurred during the older phase associated with the southerly hub of the Indian Ocean trade - which allows us to propose, in turn, that the people who came to be known as the 'Khoi' were forged by the constantly changing social and economic dynamics of an early African-yet cosmopolitan-world.
Recensione E. Gherbezza, Dizionario di italianismi in russo, Milano, Centro Ambrosiano, 2019, pp. 377, (“Fonti e Studi”, 32). The dictionary is devoted to the collection of Italian loanwords in ...Russian from the Middle Ages to Modern time. The author, drawing on a huge range of lexicographic sources, provides 1005 Italian entry words, and adds up-to-date information about their story, borrowing and usage. This is an absolutely new approach of the problem of italian loanwords the field of slavic studies.
The theme of borrowings from Hebrew in French punctuates publications, old and new, sometimes taking the form of dictionaries, sometimes chapters in volumes devoted to the French language and its ...history, or even books or articles examining , whether targeted or not, Hebrew borrowings or borrowings from various sources in our language.
