This study explores the benefits of international loanwords in Lithuanian for the learning of its vocabulary by English speakers. This study focuses on the international vocabulary that originate ...from Latin or Greek, much of which, however, was borrowed through Russian, English and French. The author examined the lexes of the above-mentioned category in the Oxford 3000 wordlist and counted the number of the Lithuanian equivalents of identical category. As a result, a total of 511 vocabulary items of that category were found in the approximately 3,000 basic Lithuanian words corpus. This study categorised the collected Lithuanian lexes by suffixes to propose regularity in cross-linguistic similarity. Many of the high-frequency English words ending in -tion and -ion corresponded to Lithuanian words ending in -cija (e.g. administracija ‘administration’) and -ija (e.g. diskusija ‘discussion’). Moreover, English words ending in -y were equivalent to Lithuanian words with the ending -ija (e.g. filosofija ‘philosophy’, geografija ‘geography’, harmonija ‘harmony’). Similarly, the Lithuanian agrikultūra ‘agriculture’, architektūra ‘architecture’, kultūra ‘culture’, literatūra‘literature’, struktūra ‘structure’ and temperatūra ‘temperature’ regularly correspond to their English equivalents. Thus, suffixes are key elements for vocabulary learning. Therefore, the present study concluded that international loanwords in Lithuanian could accelerate learning high-frequency Lithuanian vocabulary by English speakers
Aceştia nu doar au păstorit o biserică, ci au creat o cultură naţională, au deschis şcoli pentru ardeleni şi i-au trimis (cu burse) la studii în Viena, Budapesta, Roma, Trnava etc., „permiţând ...românilor accesul la un statut social superior şi la educaţie" (p. 40). Bărnuţiu a fost profesor la Academia Mihăileană şi, apoi, la Universitatea din Iaşi (1855-1864); Cipariu a elaborat prima gramatică a limbii române şi „a publicat numeroase manuale, dicţionare, cărţi de cult" (p. 95); Aron Pumnul a fost lingvist, istoric, critic literar, teolog, profesor al lui Eminescu la Cernăuţi; viziunea lui Axente Sever „implica uniformizarea limbii literare, generalizarea folosirii alfabetului latin în toate zonele locuite de români" (p. 109); Florian „are meritul de a fi transplantat ?ideologia? şi metoda educativă a Şcolii Ardelene în Muntenia" (p. 112), fiind profesor la nou înfiinţata Facultate de Litere din Bucureşti; Treboniu Laurian „contribuie în mod substanţial la întemeierea Academiei, a Universităţii din Bucureşti (a fost primul decan al Facultăţii de Litere), precum şi a Bibliotecii Academiei" (p. 117); Papiu-Ilarian rămâne în memoria colectivă nu doar ca „ideologul revoluţiei române de la 1848" (p. 122), ci şi ca „ministru al justiţiei în cadrul guvernului condus de Mihail Kogălniceanu" (p. 123). Dintre savanţii transilvăneni cu impact nu doar la nivel naţional mai putem aminti pe Emil Haţieganu (jurist, rector al universităţii clujene şi om politic de frunte), Iuliu Haţieganu (rector, medic şi om de ştiinţă), Alexandru Borza (creatorul primelor grădini botanice din România), mai mulţi membri ai familiei Moisil, academicieni originari din Ţara Năsăudului. Câteva exemple elocvente: „greco-catolicii români sunt ortodocşi cu ADN occidental' (p. 11); „tradiţia populară a păstrat cel puţin trei aspecte pozitive despre ?nătărău? loan Bob"; „În ce priveşte simplitatea modului său de viaţă, se spune că trimişii care au venit să-i anunţe numirea în funcţia de episcop l-au găsit. mestecându-şi mămăliga" (p. 74); „Enoriaşii bisericii ortodoxe Sfânta Treime din Şcheii Braşovului au refuzat să-l înmormânteze pe A. Mureşanu în cimitirul ?lor?, pe motivul că poetul era greco-catolic.
Spre sfârşitul anului 2018, Anul European al Patrimoniului Cultural, la editura Universităţii „Alexandru loan Cuza din Iaşi, în colecţia „Documenta (coordonată de prof. univ. dr. Petronel Zahariuc), ...a apărut „Catalogul manuscriselor slavo-române din Biblioteca Mănăstirii Suceviţa, o apariţie editorială aşteptată, semnată de prof. univ. dr. Olimpia Mitric. Desfiinţarea schiturilor şi a mănăstirilor după anexarea nordului Moldovei la Imperiul Habsburgic, cu excepţia Putnei, Suceviţei şi Dragomirnei şi mutarea la Cernăuţi a Episcopiei de Rădăuţi au determinat răspândirea obiectelor de preţ ale aşezămintelor de cult, pe care astăzi le regăsim şi în colecţia de manuscrise de la Suceviţa: Mănăstirea Moldoviţa (loan Gură de Aur, Mărgăritare, secolul al XVI-lea; Tetraevanghel, 1612-1613), Mănăstirea Solca (Tetraevanghel, 1616; Tetraevanghel, secolul al XVII-lea), Schitul Mare (loan Casian, Predici, secolul al XVIII-lea; învăţătură pentru ecleziarhi, secolul al XVIIIlea), Mănăstirea Voroneţ (Apostol, 1544). Prof. dr. Olimpia Mitric prezintă „comoara culturală" a Mănăstirii Suceviţa din perspectivă tipologică: literatură liturgică (13 Tetraevanghele şi un Evangheliar, patru Liturghiere, patru Tipice, trei manuscrise de muzică bisericească); colecţia de Minee (două volume, din seria de 12, ajunse până la noi); scrierile sfinţilor părinţi cu un pronunţat caracter monastic (Omiliile la Evanghelia de la Matei ale marelui orator bizantin loan Gură de Aur) şi textele cu un caracter isihast (Mărgăritarele lui Ioan Gură de Aur sau Leastviţa lui loan Climax), Predicile lui loan Casian, Vieţile sfinţilor, literatură omiletică, dogmatică (Cartea de canoane), literatură juridică (Sintagma bizantinului Matei Vlastares), literatura istorică (Pomelnicele, Sbonicul sârbesc al mitropolitului Danilo). Sunt prezentate în continuare manuscrisele fără miniaturi, dar cu ornamentică bogată, caligrafiate de mâinile unor maeştri ai condeiului (popa Ieremie din Bădeuţi, împreună cu ajutoarele sale - diaconul Teodosie şi ucenicul Anastasie, diaconul Mihail); manuscrise mai modeste, a căror grafie are însă trăsături elegante specifice Renaşterii (caligrafi Prohor, Ghelasie, Azarie, popa Toma din Siret); manuscrisele mediului cultural ruso-ucrainean, cu elemente de ornamentare cu tuşe mai groase şi culori mai închise, de influenţă apuseană; manuscrise caligrafiate pe pergament sau pe hârtie provenită din mori de hârtie din Polonia, Italia, sudul Franţei, Germania şi un exemplar cu filigranul hârtiei de la Braşov.

The synchronic linguistic situation of the urban idiom in the city of Zadar is a result of several strands of dialectal influence: Neo-Shtokavian dialect spoken in the hinterland, Chakavian ikavian ...(“ikavski”) idiom spoken in the coastal region of Croatia, Central Chakavian ikavian-ekavian (“ikavski-ekavski”) dialect and standard Croatian. Lisac established that the contemporary Zadar idiom consists of a mixture of two Croatian dialects, Chakavian and Shtokavian, each in turn further subdivided into Central Chakavian and South Chakavian, Bosnian-Herzegovinian and East Herzegovinian, respectively.
Due to varied historical circumstances, within these dialects we find a number of loanwords, mostly Turkish in Shtokavian and Romance borrowings in the Chakavian dialect. To this end the paper uses linguistic contact theory, applied in research on dialects, and explores influence in one direction only: it explores the presence of Turkish loanwords in Croatian idiom of Zadar (in its Shtokavian dialectal component) and Romance loanwords in the Zadar idiom (in its Chakavian component) but not the influence of Croatian on either Turkish or Romance languages. Hence the recipient language is Croatian (here specifically its Zadar idiom) while the donor languages are Turkish and Romance languages, mainly Venetian Italian but also standard Italian, and in some cases we are dealing with linguistic relics of Romance Dalmatian language in Croatian. We have selected to analyse Turkish loanwords in the Shtokavian dialect and Romance loanwords in the Chakavian dialect (within the Zadar idiom) because they are the most frequent foreign borrowings in the Zadar idiom, especially Romance elements that pervade the varieties of Croatian spoken in the coastal region (they often remain on a regional level only but some have passed from Chakavian into Croatian standard).
Researchers studying language variation and change induced by contact with English initially focused on the linguistic integration of English source language (SL) material in the morphophonological ...structure of the receptor language (RL). Shifting the attention toward the sociopragmatic localization of English lexical material, researchers now foreground both the social identity work conducted with English material and the pragmatic functions of English lexemes and heritage alternatives. So far, however, most of these studies rely on production data, paying less attention to language users’ perception and evaluation of English lexemes. Therefore, integrating insights from language production and evaluation, this study asks the questions (i) which lexical preference speakers express when asked to choose between an English and a heritage form; and (ii) which sociopragmatic parameters help to explain this preference. To answer these questions, a forced-choice experiment was conducted in which over 1,500 Dutch-speaking participants were asked to select their preferred expression when provided with a loanword and a heritage alternative. Each participant was offered 12 target trials and 10 filler trials. The target trials, drawn from a corpus-based study, include a balanced set of loans from three semantic fields with various frequencies in usage data. Pragmatic variation was included by randomly presenting the trials in speech contexts of communicative immediacy and communicative distance. Mixed-effects logistic regression analyses show a significant impact of community-based usage statistics, the age and self-reported attitude of the participant, as well as the speech context in which the concepts were offered.

The image of the Holy City, centered around the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb, needing no sun or moon as it is lit by God's glory, and by the Lamb, who is its lamp, and nourished and refreshed ...by the water of life, constantly plays on my mind as I survey this scene each day, and informs how I dream and imagine our ministry to be. ...with the wonderful leadership of Bob Scott and via the wonders of technology, the fabulous Trinity technical team and our talented "tech guy," Tad Errey, enabled us to share in worship with Trinity Wall Street and take part in their plenary session with former U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer. Prof. John Langford, AM, is a hydrologist with enormous industry and public service experience in areas spanning city water provision, river basin management, drainage and irrigation, and flood protection, both in Australia and around the world. Other lessons include the following: the importance of freedom to remake decisions as you go; it is entirely acceptable to drop some things in order to ensure what you do is done well; we work in a context where openly sharing and borrowing ideas is an important source of inspiration and enrichment both ways; there are many levels of complexity when working, not just with other centers, but across oceans and time zones, and this requires careful attention to timelines and lines of communication.

The present study explores the usages of the Roman alphabet within the writing system of Japanese. Japanese is typically said to have three types of characters in its writing system: hiragana, ...katakana, and kanji. However, the Roman alphabet is also commonly used in Japanese for various purposes along with other types of characters in Japanese. The present study argues that with the recent surge in electronic communication, the writing practice of Japanese is transitioning from vertical writing to horizontal writing, and this transition allows more foreign words and expressions written in the Roman alphabet to be used within Japanese without being converted into katakana loanwords. The present study also discusses the influence of the ever-increasing international interaction to the usages of the Roman alphabet within Japanese.
The article approaches Komi vocabulary for forest landscapes as a separate microsystem of concrete objects and concrete names for those objects. The comparative-historical method has been used to ...analyse that lexical group for words that are shared with cognate languages and to distinguish them from the words that are not. The latter have probably emerged during the period when the Komi-Zyrian language developed independently. The origin and proportion of the loanwords has also been found out.
