Numerous studies have explored the effects of background music on reading comprehension, however, little is known about how native language (L1) lyrics and second language (L2) lyrics in background ...music influence reading comprehension performance for college students. The present study used a mixed experimental design to examine the effects of listening habits (between-participants variable: non-listeners or listeners), music type (between-participants variable: L1 (Mandarin) pop music, L2 (English) pop music or no music) and text language (within-participants variable: L1 or L2) on reading comprehension of college students in East China. A total of 90 participants (50 females) were screened into non- listeners (
= 45) and listeners (
= 45), and then were randomly assigned to one of three groups: Mandarin pop music group (
= 30), English pop music group (
= 30) and no music group (
= 30). The results showed that reading comprehension performance was negatively affected by music with lyrics compared to the no music condition. Furthermore, Chinese/English reading comprehension was reduced more by pop music in the same language as the written texts. As expected, non-listeners were more negatively affected by music with lyrics than listeners. For both listeners and non-listeners, average reading comprehension accuracy rates were the lowest in the condition of music with native language lyrics. Overall, our research findings indicate that listening to pop music with lyrics reduces reading comprehension performance. However, listening to background music cause much less distraction if the students commonly listen to music while reading. The current study supports the duplex-mechanism account of auditory distraction.

The primary goal of this research was to examine metaphors in selected Blackpink song lyrics. The study's objectives are to identify the types of metaphors syntactically based on Abdul Wahab (1986) ...and to analyse the metaphorical meanings of selected Blackpink song lyrics using Lakoff and Johnson's source and target (1980). A descriptive-qualitative approach is used in this study. The metaphors used in Blackpink's song lyrics were the data. The researcher applies Abdul Wahab's theory of syntactical types of metaphor to the identified data and analyses it using Lakoff and Johnson's concept of source and target in metaphor. Subjective nominative metaphor, objective nominative metaphor, predicative metaphor, and sentence metaphor were the four types of metaphor used in five selected Blackpink song lyrics. The writer finds that the phrase metaphor is the type of metaphor most commonly used in Blackpink's songs, followed by the objective metaphor of the predicative metaphor and subjective metaphor. Each of the types of metaphors collected in the following study contains abstract terms with real meanings.
The study aims to discover lexical metaphors in Westlife's selected song lyrics. Specifically, it was to reveal the types and source domains of the metaphors. Swear It Again, If I Let You Go, Flying ...Without Wings, I Have a Dream, and Fool Again, which are the legendary boy band's most popular songs according to TraxFM (2017), were selected as the data sources. The study applied the qualitative descriptive method, the study focused on exploring the nature of the study object as proposed by Kothari (2004). Since the phenomena investigated are metaphors in song lyrics, the study adapted Schmitt's (2005) concept of metaphor analysis. The study's data are all metaphors in the five songs of Westlife (Swear it Again, If I Let You Go, Flying Without Wings, I Have a Dream, and Fool Again), which TraxFM (2017) considers as the boy band's best songs ever. The data MIP-Praglejazz was employed to identify the metaphors in those selected song lyrics. The study found: (1) the selected song lyrics contained 15 structural, 24 ontological, and only two orientational metaphors; (2) Most of the metaphors have a concrete thing as their source domain, such as living thing, traveler, place, flame, sunrise, container, bird, and object. It can be inferred that: (1) the song lyrics are dominated by ontological and structural metaphors, and (2) the metaphors are mainly constructed of concrete concepts, which humankind are so familiar with in their daily life. Detailed findings will be presented, and their implications will be discussed.

A five-minute video describes how to read music. It describes how notes and music notation make up pieces of music and how they interact to make a piece of art. It describes how pitch and rhythm work ...together across the staff. It shows how the pitch is arranged and how to read notes on the right lines at the correct pitch to create the piece of music. It has a description of a clef and what it is used for. The video covers most descriptions of musical terminology which builds up knowledge from the basics to simplify reading sheet music for beginners. The rhythm is described simply by using a clock and explains how beats and rhythm affect the musical composition by using the bar lines. The video is very clear and precise and easy to listen to.
Music is ubiquitous in our everyday lives, and lyrics play an integral role when we listen to music. The complex relationships between lyrical content, its temporal evolution over the last decades, ...and genre-specific variations, however, are yet to be fully understood. In this work, we investigate the dynamics of English lyrics of Western, popular music over five decades and five genres, using a wide set of lyrics descriptors, including lyrical complexity, structure, emotion, and popularity. We find that pop music lyrics have become simpler and easier to comprehend over time: not only does the lexical complexity of lyrics decrease (for instance, captured by vocabulary richness or readability of lyrics), but we also observe that the structural complexity (for instance, the repetitiveness of lyrics) has decreased. In addition, we confirm previous analyses showing that the emotion described by lyrics has become more negative and that lyrics have become more personal over the last five decades. Finally, a comparison of lyrics view counts and listening counts shows that when it comes to the listeners' interest in lyrics, for instance, rock fans mostly enjoy lyrics from older songs; country fans are more interested in new songs' lyrics.
Steely Dan has long been identified with dark themes. But layers of nuance emerge when the intricate interaction between musical techniques and lyrics is considered. This study argues that even some ...of the group's grimmest stories about human nature can be viewed as cautionary tales designed to enlighten the listener. Other compositions, though often sad, are tales of empathy and human kindness. Songs displaying a wide range of thematic tones-from dark to light-are examined through a double lens of words and music to yield four thematic categories: derision, admonition, irony, and sincerity.
Songs, regarded as a form of musical expression, consistently mirror societal culture. This research aims to unveil and analyze the song tegalan, which serves as a portrayal of Tegal’s cultural ...identity. The research employs a qualitative descriptive methodology. Data collection for this study involved scrutinizing tegalan songs, particularly their lyrical content, with the purpose of comprehending the themes depicting the unique identity of the Tegal community. In addition to observation, the researcher conducted in-depth interviews with three notable tegalan song artists. A literature review was also undertaken to corroborate the research findings. The collected data was then distilled to extract information pertinent to the research theme, which was subsequently presented based on the interpretation of Tegal’s cultural identity and then conclusively analyzed. The research findings indicate that within the lyrics of tegalan songs, four cultural identities are discernible: (1) the utilization of colloquial Javanese infused with the “ngapak” dialect; (2) the characteristic of spontaneous and sincere communication reflective of the Tegal community’s culture; (3) the identity of coastal communities, which tend to exhibit straightforwardness; and (4) the diverse range of typical Tegal delicacies such as “sega ponggol”, tea with palm sugar (“teh poci gula batu”), among others. Based on these findings, it can be inferred that tegalan songs, in terms of their lyrical content, epitomize the linguistic culture of the Tegal community in both structure and communicative patterns. Moreover, in terms of messaging, these songs convey insights into the identity and distinctive attributes of the Tegal community..
