Large-scale increases and expansion of common raven (Corvus corax; raven) populations are occurring across much of North America, leading to increased negative consequences for livestock and ...agriculture, human health and safety, and sensitive species conservation. We describe a science-based adaptive management framework that incorporates recent quantitative analyses and mapping products for addressing areas with elevated raven numbers and minimizing potential adverse impacts to sensitive species, agricultural damage, and human safety. The framework comprises 5 steps: (1) desktop analysis; (2) field assessments; (3) comparison of raven density estimates to an ecological threshold (in terms of either density or density plus distance to nearest active or previous nest); (4) prescribing management options using a 3-tiered process (i.e., habitat improvements, subsidy reductions, and direct actions using StallPOPd.V4 software); and (5) post-management monitoring. The framework is integrated within the Science-based Management of Ravens Tool (SMaRT), a web-based application outfitted with a user-friendly interface that guides managers through each step to develop a fully customized adaptive plan for raven management. In the SMaRT interface, users can: (1) interact with pre-loaded maps of raven occurrence and density and define their own areas of interest within the Great Basin to delineate proposed survey or treatment sites; (2) enter site-level density estimates from distance sampling methods or perform estimation of raven densities using the rapid assessment protocol that we provide; (3) compare site-level density estimates to an identified ecological threshold; and (4) produce a list of potential management options for their consideration. The SMaRT supports decisionmaking by operationalizing scientific products for raven management and facilitates realization of diverse management goals including sensitive species conservation, protection of livestock and agriculture, safeguarding human health, and addressing raven overabundance and expansion. We illustrate the use of the framework through SMaRT using an example of greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) conservation efforts within the Great Basin, USA.
Raver et al found that the number of chronic conditions was not associated with disenrollment from Medicare Advantage (MA) to medicare fee-for-service (FFS) or from FFS to MA between 2010 and 2019. ...Burke uses their study findings to discuss the MA program as a whole and raises concern that some individuals may not completely understand MA plans' utilization management tools and subsequently find it difficult to switch to FFS because they cannot find a generous Medigap policy at an affordable price. As the MA program is rapidly expanding among Medicare beneficiaries, Burke's concerns are valid. However, their study did not examine any of the issues Burke raises and never intended to. In an unbiased way, they reported factual trends in Medicare enrollment patterns, indicating that MA disenrollment has decreased over time, including among those with multiple chronic conditions.
Marine fish stocks are an important part of the world food system and are particularly important for many of the poorest people of the world. Most existing analyses suggest overfishing is increasing, ...and there is widespread concern that fish stocks are decreasing throughout most of the world. We assembled trends in abundance and harvest rate of stocks that are scientifically assessed, constituting half of the reported global marine fish catch. For these stocks, on average, abundance is increasing and is at proposed target levels. Compared with regions that are intensively managed, regions with less-developed fisheries management have, on average, 3-fold greater harvest rates and half the abundance as assessed stocks. Available evidence suggests that the regions without assessments of abundance have little fisheries management, and stocks are in poor shape. Increased application of area-appropriate fisheries science recommendations and management tools are still needed for sustaining fisheries in places where they are lacking.
Project management tools are essential for streamlining project management activities and providing a variety of functionalities to assist organizations in executing projects efficiently. The ...selection of an appropriate tool is crucial, given the many options available in the market. This scholarly article employs a comparative analysis methodology to scrutinize two prominent project management tools, Asana and Trello. The aim is to assist companies and organizations in making informed decisions based on their specific needs. The comparative analysis delves into the strengths and weaknesses of Asana and Trello, assessing their features, functionalities, and suitability in the context of knowledge management areas. Both tools are evaluated for their capability to address project management challenges and improve organizational processes. The study concludes that the choice between Asana and Trello hinges on factors such as project scale, organizational requirements, and the preferred level of complexity. With its comprehensive features, Asana emerges as ideal for larger, agile-oriented projects. In contrast, Trello's simplicity and user-friendly interface suit relatively smaller projects well. This analysis provides valuable insights for organizations to align their project management tools with specific project conditions, facilitating optimising project execution processes to meet their unique goals and requirements. In terms of features, Asana outshines Trello by providing a more extensive range of functionalities that effectively support the mapping of knowledge management areas.
Areas beyond national jurisdiction, or the high seas, are vital to life on Earth. However, the conservation of these areas, for example, through area‐based management tools (ABMTs), is challenging, ...particularly when accounting for global change. Using decision science, integrated population models, and a Critically Endangered seabird (Kuaka; Pelecanoides whenuahouensis) as a case study, we evaluated potential ABMTs in the high seas under global change and different governance structures, while accounting for uncertainty and imperfect compliance. Our study highlighted that global change in these areas will likely cause population declines of ∼60% by 2050. However, decisive conservation action could cost‐effectively address predicted declines, particularly when implemented as soon as possible and under the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction Treaty. We illustrate how decision science can transparently navigate a complex seascape of management decisions and we advocate for its wider integration in the management of the largest sections of our planet, the high seas.
Knowledge Management is an essential element for the successful implementation of projects. Due to the temporary nature of the projects and the teams that participate in them, the transfer, ...integration, and management of knowledge among projects is vital to promote sharing best practices, and to avoid the repetition of previous mistakes, in order to increase the probability of success for the projects and the organization. For this reason, Project Management tools can play a significant role in supporting Knowledge Management. The goal of this paper is to analyze and evaluate the project management tools of the Gartner Leader quadrant (2019 Gartner Magic Quadrant) regarding their potential for the Capture, Storage, Sharing and Application of knowledge, according to the artifacts in the PMBOK 1, and determine which are the best options. Gartner's leader tools were compared to Confluence, referenced as a great choice for knowledge and project document management. For the development of the artifact was used the Design Science Research (DSR) methodology. The application that obtained the highest score was Targetprocess.
ABSTRACT
In the 12 years since Dudgeon et al. (2006) reviewed major pressures on freshwater ecosystems, the biodiversity crisis in the world's lakes, reservoirs, rivers, streams and wetlands has ...deepened. While lakes, reservoirs and rivers cover only 2.3% of the Earth's surface, these ecosystems host at least 9.5% of the Earth's described animal species. Furthermore, using the World Wide Fund for Nature's Living Planet Index, freshwater population declines (83% between 1970 and 2014) continue to outpace contemporaneous declines in marine or terrestrial systems. The Anthropocene has brought multiple new and varied threats that disproportionately impact freshwater systems. We document 12 emerging threats to freshwater biodiversity that are either entirely new since 2006 or have since intensified: (i) changing climates; (ii) e‐commerce and invasions; (iii) infectious diseases; (iv) harmful algal blooms; (v) expanding hydropower; (vi) emerging contaminants; (vii) engineered nanomaterials; (viii) microplastic pollution; (ix) light and noise; (x) freshwater salinisation; (xi) declining calcium; and (xii) cumulative stressors. Effects are evidenced for amphibians, fishes, invertebrates, microbes, plants, turtles and waterbirds, with potential for ecosystem‐level changes through bottom‐up and top‐down processes. In our highly uncertain future, the net effects of these threats raise serious concerns for freshwater ecosystems. However, we also highlight opportunities for conservation gains as a result of novel management tools (e.g. environmental flows, environmental DNA) and specific conservation‐oriented actions (e.g. dam removal, habitat protection policies, managed relocation of species) that have been met with varying levels of success. Moving forward, we advocate hybrid approaches that manage fresh waters as crucial ecosystems for human life support as well as essential hotspots of biodiversity and ecological function. Efforts to reverse global trends in freshwater degradation now depend on bridging an immense gap between the aspirations of conservation biologists and the accelerating rate of species endangerment.
Log data records important runtime information about the running of a software system for different purposes including performance assurance, capacity planning, and anomaly detection. Log management ...tools such as ELK Stack and Splunk are widely adopted to manage and leverage log data in order to assist DevOps in real-time log analytics and decision making. To enable fast queries and to save storage space, such tools split log data into small blocks (e.g., 16KB), then index and compress each block separately. Previous log compression studies focus on improving the compression of either large-sized log files or log streams, without considering improving the compression of small log blocks (the actual compression need by modern log management tools). The evaluation of four state-of-the-art compression approaches (e.g., Logzip , a variation of Logzip by pre-extracting log templates named Logzip-E , LogArchive and Cowic ) indicates that these approaches do not perform well on small log blocks. In fact, the compressed blocks that are preprocessed using Logzip , Logzip-E , LogArchive or Cowic are even larger (on median 1.3 times, 1.5 times, 0.2 times or 6.6 times) than the compressed blocks without any preprocessing. Hence, we propose an approach named LogBlock to preprocess small log blocks before compressing them with a general compressor such as gzip , deflate and lz4 , which are widely adopted by log management tools. LogBlock reduces the repetitiveness of logs by preprocessing the log headers and rearranging the log content leading to an improved compression ratio for a log file. Our evaluation on 16 log files shows that, for 16KB to 128KB block sizes, the compressed blocks by LogBlock are on median 5 to 21 percent smaller than the same compressed blocks without preprocessing (outperforming the state-of-the-art compression approaches). LogBlock achieves both a higher compression ratio (a median of 1.7 to 8.4 times, 1.9 to 10.0 times, 1.3 to 1.9 times and 6.2 to 11.4 times) and a faster compression speed (a median of 30.8 to 49.7 times, 42.6 to 53.8 times, 4.5 to 6.0 times and 2.5 to 4.0 times) than Logzip , Logzip-E , LogArchive and Cowic . LogBlock can help improve the storage efficiency of log management tools.
Despite the competitive advantages of sustainable business models, developing management solutions to systematically support sustainability integration into organizational strategy is still a ...challenging approach for most organizations. Based on a critical analysis of existing tools to support sustainable business models, the present paper describes the development of a practical management tool to guide the strategic integration of sustainability in organizational business models. The proposed management tool results from the synergistic combination of the Sustainable Value Exchange Matrix and the Integrative Sustainable Intelligence Model, in a cyclic and continuous process supported by the periodic diagnosis of the key organizational factors with relevance for successful sustainability integration processes. The management tool described in this paper is expected to guide the strategic adaptation of organizations toward results with a positive impact on sustainability, with an effective contribution to the development of more sustainable business models.
Although growth management programs have many purposes, a critical one is to contain urban and suburban sprawl. Their efficacy in this regard is not well understood. In this paper, we review a ...comprehensive set of growth management tools, used by urban planners and policymakers to curb sprawl, starting with the history of the tool, then describing how it works in practice, and finally presenting any available empirical evidence on how well it works to curb sprawl and/or achieve other public purposes. While growth management isn't a panacea for controlling sprawl, it is certainly not the failure implied by critics.
