University-workplace partnerships are strategies increasingly called for in higher education. This article reports on collaborative knowledge production between employed professional chemical ...engineers (registered for higher degrees) and their university-based supervisors (researchers in the field of chemical engineering). The study draws on a language of description, developed by Basil Bernstein, for understanding knowledge discourses and structures, the movement or 'recontextualisation' of knowledge from one domain to another and the role of knowledge in potential and actual practice. These concepts are used to analyse the ways in which knowledge production in partnerships between academic and professional engineers was enabled or constrained.
This case study describes an action research project that explored the relationship between a supervisor and a dissertation student who was following an in-service Master's course for teachers. The ...focus of the article is on the initial expectations of both the supervisor and the student in relation to their one-to-one relationship. Both the supervisor and the student analysed the interview data in order to identify similarities and differences in expectations. The results of this process are discussed and some comparisons are made with the work of others who have also studied this important issue. The impact of the research findings on the supervisor is then discussed.

The article presents a faculty-librarian collaborative course model for information literacy instruction for liberal arts students. Information literacy was integrated seamlessly into a master's ...thesis seminar, and the faculty member and librarian worked together to teach students effective research skills while helping them make personal connections to their theses. The learning experience was transformational. As students engaged themselves with problems of the real world and shared their learning, their voices articulated insights about themselves and the world. The authors conclude that integrating information literacy into the curriculum and teaching students holistically is the key to successful student learning.
In this meta-analysis, effects of teacher characteristics on instructional leadership perceptions and some organizational variables is tested. Findings of the total of 67 independent studies are ...gathered in the metaanalysis which represents a population of 36,756. According to the findings of this meta-analysis performed by using random effects model; while task type, school level and type have effect on instructional leadership perception, gender and branch of the teachers have no effect. Besides, it is discovered in this meta-analysis that instructional leadership has medium-level effect on some organizational variables. According to the analysis results, the most reliable scale for measuring instructional leadership is found to be ‘Instructional Leadership Behaviors of School Administrators’ scale developed by Şişman.

This article explores and summarizes trends in research and scholarship over the last decade (i.e., 1998-2007) for students completing dissertations and theses in the area of distance education. The ...topics addressed, research designs utilized, and data collection and analysis methods used were compiled and analyzed. Results from this study indicate that most of the distance education research conducted by graduate students in this period of time has been descriptive, often addressing the perceptions, concerns, and satisfaction levels of various stakeholders with a particular distance education experience. Studies of this type typically used self-report surveys and analyzed the data using descriptive statistics. Validating the concern of many distance education scholars, there was a lack of graduate student research aimed at developing a theory base in distance education. On a positive note, projects directly comparing distance education with traditional face-to-face classrooms to determine the merit of specific programs declined significantly in 2007 as compared to 1998. This result might indicate that distance learning is becoming accepted as a viable and important educational experience in its own right. Another encouraging finding was the decreased emphasis on studies focused on technology issues, such as those analyzing the quality of distance education technology and questioning educators’ ability to provide an acceptable technology-enabled distance learning experience.
This document aims to support graduate students who are in the process of preparing graduate theses or dissertations, and is organized according to the planning, research, and writing phases. The ...function of theses and dissertations is to provide students with experience in conducting and presenting research and to add to the body of knowledge in a given area. Sources of guidance for graduate research include advisors, supervising committees, fellow students, experts, and the available literature. Various methods of approaching literature reviews are discussed. The document addresses sources and types of research problems, research methodology, data collection techniques and data analysis. It also discusses the writing process and finding an audience for thesis/dissertation publication. An appendix presents an outline of a dissertation proposal. (HB)
This book is a practical guide to researching and writing the doctoral dissertation or master's thesis. Part 1 offers seven chapters on preparatory steps: laying the groundwork for the thesis and ...dissertation; finding a research problem; conducting a focused review of the literature; making a preliminary choice of methodology; organizing and scheduling work; developing the prospectus and organizing the committee; and learning from the preproposal conference. Part 2 section focuses on the proposal, emphasizing that the quality of the proposal directly affects the quality of the dissertation. Chapters cover: conducting a comprehensive critique of the literature; detailing the methodology; and developing and defending the proposal. Part 3 follows the process of implementing the research plan and writing the dissertation. The nine chapters address the following: carrying out the research design; mastering the academic style; organizing the dissertation; writing the introductory chapter; summarizing the review of the literature; explaining the methodology; presenting, summarizing, and discussing the results; and preparing the dissertation for defense and publication. The 2 chapters of Part 4 discuss defending and publishing the thesis or dissertation. Finally, Part 5 considers problems throughout the dissertation process, including problems with the committee and personal problems with the dissertation. (Contains 35 references.) (DB)
The purpose of this book is to share, in rich detail, an understanding of how it feels and what it means to do qualitative research, and to provide support for doctoral students who choose this form ...of inquiry for their dissertation research.
