Six letters from Giulio Preti to Giovanni Maria Bertin. Written during and after the second world war, these letters show the young Preti and his first steps as a critical empiricist.
In 1901-1902, shortly following his appointment to the chair of Greek and Latin Philosophy at the Collège de France, Bergson devoted an entire course to explaining and commenting on Plotinus’ Enneads ...VI 9, a treatise bearing the Porphyrian title of ‘On the Good or the One’. Until recently, no transcriptions or notes from this course were available, so the finding of annotations in Bergson’s own hand constitutes an exciting discovery, of which the present essay provides a first overview. Bergson made his notes on a copy of the Enneads which, in all likelihood, is the one he used to prepare the lecture course. These annotations provide some insight into the philosopher’s approach to Plotinus, whereby a philological investigation of the text is conducted within the framework of a philosophical analysis of the problems it raises. In particular, the present contribution examines Bergson’s analysis of chapters 2 and 3 of the treatise by focusing on four aspects: textual interventions, clarifications of the text, translation, and interpretation. These aspects, which are first distinguished and then reconnected, are strictly complementary. They fall within a distinctly theoretical perspective and at the same time foster philosophical reflection, revolving as they do around two topics of considerable importance for both Plotinus and Bergson: the theory of the Intellect and the conception of ecstasy.
An unpublished writing of Norberto Bobbio on the Centre of Methodological Studies of Turin. The text reproduces the last speech of Norberto Bobbio on the Centre of Methodological Studies of Turin, ...one of the first and most important Italian research centers in which the philosophical tradition in thought was to merge with scientific research. Written in 1987 primarily in honor of Ludovico Geymonat, one of the leading heads of the Centre together with Bobbio, it encompasses the whole story of the association from its initial disruptive phase up to the most ineffective and dispersive last years. The editor points out in this report the valuable references to the numerous and very important activities of the Turin Centre, but also the following three questionable presuppositions behind its activity: 1) identification of the Centre of Methodological Studies with Geymonat’s thinking; 2) existence of a unitary theoretical pattern in the Centre’s activities; 3) the neo-positivistic nature of this unitary theoretical pattern.
The construction industry is responsible for 30% of energy consumption, 40% of CO2 emissions, and 50% of raw material extraction. Introducing actions to improve the sustainability of induced impacts ...is urgently necessary, and it is essential to bring about this change by using innovative materials with a natural matrix and construction processes that optimise the raw materials and allow their recyclability. The article introduces the first outcomes of an interdisciplinary research project focused on applying geopolymers for building components. The research highlights the strategic role of sustainability combined with digitisation in order to improve ecological-environmental performance.
The historic center of Florence, universally recognized as a monumental unicum, has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1982. Although the city is generally known worldwide as the ...cradle of the Renaissance, most of the city walls of the historic center date back to the latest building transformations. Through the study of the main urban transformations carried out under the government of Pietro Leopoldo up to the assignment of Florence as the capital of the kingdom of Italy, this contribution traces the urban evolution of the modern history of Florence and reflects on the image of today's city, a result of the stratification of the epochs. Furthermore, the contribution collects some examples of recent interventions carried out on the building fronts that allow us to reflect on the issues and criticalities of the conservation and safeguarding of the urban landscape in its totality and complexity.
The paper presents an overview of the main causes of decay affecting archaeological stone materials in underwater environments. It is a complex phenomenon so far quite investigated, where a multitude ...of factors is involved. Degradation forms in seawater imply not only a variation in the physico-mechanical and geochemical properties of materials, but also an aesthetic damage, due to superficial deposits, which can determine to the illegibility of the artefacts. In this context, it is crucial to determine to what extent these decay factors, mainly attributable to biological growth, could affect the durability of materials and what are the effects of new and suitable procedures for their maintenance and protection.
