Feline osteoarthritis (OA) leads to chronic pain and somatosensory sensitisation. In humans, sensory exposure can modulate chronic pain. Recently, electroencephalography (EEG) revealed a specific ...brain signature to human OA. However, EEG pain characterisation or its modulation does not exist in OA cats, and all EEG were conducted in sedated cats, using intradermal electrodes, which could alter sensory (pain) perception.
Cats (n=11) affected by OA were assessed using ten gold-plated surface electrodes. Sensory stimuli were presented in random orders: response to mechanical temporal summation, grapefruit scent and mono-chromatic wavelengths (500 nm-blue, 525 nm-green and 627 nm-red light). The recorded EEG was processed to identify event-related potentials (ERP) and to perform spectral analysis (z-score).
The procedure was well-tolerated. The ERPs were reported for both mechanical (F3, C3, Cz, P3, Pz) and olfactory stimuli (Cz, Pz). The main limitation was motion artifacts. Spectral analysis revealed a significant interaction between the power of EEG frequency bands and light wavelengths (p<0.001). All wavelengths considered, alpha band proportion was higher than that of delta and gamma bands (p<0.044), while the latter was lower than the beta band (p<0.016). Compared to green and red, exposure to blue light elicited distinct changes in EEG power over time (p<0.001).
This is the first demonstration of EEG feasibility in conscious cats with surface electrodes recording brain activity while exposing them to sensory stimulations.
The identification of ERPs and spectral patterns opens new avenues for investigating feline chronic pain and its potential modulation through sensory interventions.
•Electroencephalography (EEG), using surface electrodes, allowed non-invasive recording of brain activity in conscious cats.•Event-related potentials following mechanical and olfactory stimulations were identified in awake cats using EEG.•Visual stimulations correlated with EEG spectral signatures, showed distinct patterns across different light wavelengths.•This method allows to study brain activity in animals affected by chronic pain and its modulation with sensory stimulation.
Controlled regulation of plant growth is a general prerequisite for the production of marketable ornamental plants. Consumers as well as retailers prefer stronger, more compact plants with greener ...leaves as these not only better meet a certain desired visual quality but also allow for a maximization of production per unit area as well as facilitation of packaging and transport. The same applies for the production of young vegetable plants. Special attention is paid to solid, compact and resilient plants that survive transport and planting without any problems. During the last decades plant growth control has mainly been achieved through the application of chemical plant growth regulators that generally interfere with the function of growth regulating hormones. However, there is an increasing demand to replace chemical treatments by other means such as the modulation of growth conditions, including temperature, light and fertilization. Alternatively, the application of mechanical stimulation has been shown to induce plant responses that yield some of the commercially relevant phenotypes including increased compactness, higher girth, darker leaves and a delay in flowering. The ability of plants to sense and respond to mechanical stimuli is an adaptive trait associated with increased fitness in many environmental settings. Mechanical stimulation in nature occurs e.g. through wind, rain, neighboring plants or predatory animals and induces a range of morphogenic responses that have been summarized under the term thigmomorphogenesis. We are only just about to begin to understand the molecular mechanisms underlying mechanosensing and the associated morphogenic changes in plants. However, a number of examples suggest that mechanical stimulation applied in a greenhouse setting can be used to alter plant growth in order to produce marketable plants. In this review will briefly summarize the current knowledge concerning the biological principles of thigmomorphogenesis and discuss the potential of mechanical growth regulation in commercial plant production especially with respect to organic horticulture.
•In all tested devices, the amplitude of the stimulation pulse depends on the stimulation frequency.•The shape of the stimulation pulse changes with the number of active outputs in 3 out of 4 ...devices.•All tested devices are characterized by a good temporal stability of the stimulation output.
Different devices for mechano-acoustic muscle vibration became available on the market in the last ten years. Although the use of these vibrators is increasing in research and clinical settings, the features of their stimulation output were never described in literature. In this study we aimed to quantify and compare the stimulation output of the four most widespread pneumatic devices for focal muscle vibration available on the market.
A piezoelectric pressure sensor was used to measure the pressure profile generated by the four selected devices in the following experimental conditions: i) measurement of the output changes associated with variations of the stimulation amplitude for three stimulation frequencies (100 Hz, 200 Hz, and 300 Hz); ii) measurement of the output changes during a 20-min long stimulation at constant frequency (300 Hz) and amplitude; iii) measurement of the output changes associated with the progressive activation of all stimulation channels at constant frequency (200 Hz) for different amplitudes.
The maximum peak-to-peak amplitudes of the pressure waves were in the range 102 mbar - 369 mbar (below the maximum values declared by the different manufacturers). The shape of the pressure waves generated by the four devices was quasi-sinusoidal and asymmetric with respect to the atmospheric pressure. All output features had a remarkable intra- and inter-device variability.
Further studies are required to support the technological improvement of the currently available devices and to focus the issues of vibration effectiveness, limitations, proper protocols, modalities of its application and assessment in neuromuscular training and rehabilitation.

The meniscus is a fibrocartilaginous structure of the knee joint that serves a crucial role in joint health and biomechanics. Degeneration or removal of the meniscus is known to lead to a chronic and ...debilitating disease known as knee osteoarthritis, whose prevalence is expected to increase in the next few decades. Meniscus bioengineering has been developed as a potential alternative to current treatment methods, wherein meniscus-like tissues are engineered using cells, materials, and biomechanical stimuli. The application of mechanical stimulation in meniscus bioengineering has presented varied results but, for the most part, it has been shown to enhance meniscus-like tissue formation. In this review, we summarized literature over the last 10 years of various mechanical stimuli applied in bioengineering meniscus tissues. The role of individual loading types is examined, and the effects on engineered meniscus are evaluated on both molecular and tissue levels. In addition, simulated microgravity is highlighted as a new area of interest in meniscus engineering, and its potential use as a disease-driving platform is discussed. Taken together, with the increased understanding of the effects of mechanical stimulation on bioengineered meniscus tissues, the most suitable loading regime could be developed for meniscus tissue engineering and osteoarthritis modeling.
Biochemical signals, such as growth factors, cytokines, and transcription factors are known to play a crucial role in regulating a variety of cellular activities as well as maintaining the normal ...function of different tissues and organs. If the biochemical signals are assumed to be one side of the coin, the other side comprises biophysical cues. There is growing evidence showing that biophysical signals, and in particular mechanical cues, also play an important role in different stages of human life ranging from morphogenesis during embryonic development to maturation and maintenance of tissue and organ function throughout life. In order to investigate how mechanical signals influence cell and tissue function, tremendous efforts have been devoted to fabricating various materials and devices for delivering mechanical stimuli to cells and tissues. Here, an overview of the current state of the art in the design and development of such materials and devices is provided, with a focus on their design principles, and challenges and perspectives for future research directions are highlighted.

Support withdrawal has been currently considered as one of the main factors involved in regulation of the human locomotor system. For last decades, several authors, including the authors of the ...present paper, have revealed afferent mechanisms of support perception and introduced the concept of the support afferentation system. The so-called "dry immersion" model which was developed in Russia allows for suspension of subjects in water providing the simulation of the mechanical support withdrawal. The present review is a summary of data allowing to appreciate the value of the "dry" immersion model for the purposes of studying cellular responses of human postural muscle to gravitational unloading. These studies corroborated our hypothesis that the removal of support afferentation inactivates the slow motor unit pool which leads to selective inactivation, and subsequent atony and atrophy, of muscle fibers expressing the slow isoform of myosin heavy chain (which constitutes the majority of soleus muscle fibers). Fibers that have lost a significant part of cytoskeletal molecules are incapable of effective actomyosin motor mobilization which leads to lower calcium sensitivity and lower range of maximal tension in permeabilized fibers. Support withdrawal also leads to lower efficiency of protective mechanisms (nitric oxide synthase) and decreased activity of AMP-activated protein kinase. Thus, "dry" immersion studies have already contributed considerably to the gravitational physiology of skeletal muscle.
In recent decades， tumor microenvironment （TME） plays a significant role in tumorigenesis， progression， immune evasion， and therapeutic response， which has become a hot topic in tumor research. As a ...physical feature of TME， “solid stress” can be applied from the outside by surrounding normal tissues or caused by the tumor itself due to its growth. As the tumor grows， solid stress will destroy the structure and function of surrounding tissues through biochemical-physical mechanisms and promote tumor occurrence and treatment resistance. In this article， the mechanism and related progress on solid stress in tumors were reviewed and the association between cancer biology and physics was investigated， aiming to provide reference for the research and development of new drugs and treatment strategies for cancer.
The significance of matrix stiffness in cancer development has been investigated in recent years. The gradual elastic force the extracellular matrix imparts to cells, known as matrix stiffness, is ...one of the most important types of mechanical stimulation. Increased matrix stiffness alters the biological activity of cells, which promotes the growth of numerous malignancies, including breast cancer. Comprehensive studies have demonstrated that increasing matrix stiffness activates molecular signaling pathways that are closely linked to breast cancer progression. There are many articles exploring the relationship between mechanism hardness and breast cancer, so we wanted to provide a systematic summary of recent research advances. In this review, we briefly introduce the mechanism of matrix stiffness in breast cancer, elaborate on the effect of extracellular matrix stiffness on breast cancer biological behavior and signaling pathways, and finally, we will talk about breast cancer treatment that focuses on matrix stiffness.
