We examine the influence of the COVID‐19 pandemic on medical occupation preference, focusing on Wuhan, China. We conducted a survey of 5686 respondents in China regarding the influence of the ...COVID‐19 pandemic on medical occupation preference. We also conducted a complimentary survey in the UK with 1198 respondents, as well as a field experiment in Wuhan with 428 first and second‐year medical students. We find a significant negative impact of the pandemic on the willingness to let a loved one choose a medical occupation. Individuals who were heavily influenced by the pandemic, that is, Wuhan residents, especially medical workers, express significantly lower medical occupation preference. Further analysis from Sobel‐Goodman mediation tests reveals that around half of the total negative effect can be mediated by enhanced risk aversion and reduced altruism. The UK survey and the field experiment with medical students in Wuhan reinforce these findings. Our results suggest a shift in medical workers' risk‐ and altruistic‐preferences has led to a reduced medical occupation preference. Non‐medical workers and students who are more altruistic and risk‐seeking are more likely to choose a medical occupation.

The heritage of Slovenian house names and surnames reflects, among others, the former medicine and pharmaceutical occupations, midwifery, and folk medicine practices, and besides that, also health ...status and illnesses of people. Surnames, which are especially strongly intertwined with family, local and social history, are closely related to folk medicine and magic. Unlike house names (vulgo), which are the usual nicknames for physical and mental characteristics and abilities, surnames denote medical occupations and medicinal folk practice as such. According to the most recent data (as of January 1, 2020) of The Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia, at least 40 surnames reminiscent former medical or pharmaceutical professions. These newly discovered digital data in open access are precious for the history of medicine because they allow comparing surnames geographically, by frequency, and through the time.

In der Ausgabe von September 2011 wurde bereits das Merkmalskatalogverfahren als ein Ansatz vorgestellt (Siepmann & Groneberg, 2011), das im Wesentlichen das Vorhandensein spezifischer Merkmale von Berufen thematisiert, die erforderlich sind, um von einer Profession sprechen zu können. Als zweiten Ansatz innerhalb der Professionssoziologie lässt sich die struk-turtheoretische Perspektive charakterisieren. Im Unterschied zum Merkmalskatalogverfahren geht es hier nicht primär um das Vorhandensein spezifischer Merkmale, sondern vielmehr um die Erläuterung der besonderen Aufgabe von Professionen. Unter der
strukturtheoretischen
Perspektive versammeln sich wiederum je nach Autor unterschiedliche Vorstellungen und Herangehensweisen. Ihnen gemeinsam ist jedoch die Vorstellung, dass professionelles Handeln immer dann erforderlich ist, wenn Personen nicht mehr alleine mit ihren Problemen umgehen können. Als Aufgabe der Profession verstehen sie daher die stellvertretende Deutung und Krisenbewältigung.

Viele medizinische Fachdisziplinen sehen sich in Zukunft mit einem immer größer werdenden Nachwuchsproblem konfrontiert. Betroffen ist hiervon auch unter anderem die Arbeitsmedizin ...und Fragen zur Rolle und Entwicklung einer Profession haben eine immer größer werdende Bedeutung. In diesem Zusammenhang sind professionssoziologische Ansätze nicht nur für die Entwicklung in der Medizin wichtig, sondern sie spielen auch eine große Rolle bei der Entwicklung einer Vielzahl anderer Professionen. Diesbezüglich ist es für praktisch tätige ArbeitsmedizinerInnen von Bedeutung, Kenntnisse über das soziologische Instrumentarium zu haben, um im Diskurs mit Personalabteilungen professionell agieren zu können.
In diesem und folgenden Beiträgen werden unterschiedliche professionssoziologische Ansätze vorgestellt und bewertet. Das in dieser Arbeit im Vordergrund stehende Merkmalskatalogverfahren beschäftigt sich mit der grundlegenden Frage, über welche Merkmale ein Beruf verfügen muss, um als Profession gelten zu können. Dieser Ansatz bringt fünf grundlegende Kriterien hervor. Dazu gehören ein exklusives Wissen in Zusammenhang mit einer akademischen Ausbildung, ein Monopol über die angebotenen Dienstleistungen, das Vorhandensein einer gemeinsamen Berufsethik, Autonomie in der Berufsausführung sowie ein hohes Sozialprestige.

Republike Slovenije, najmanje četrdeset prezimena podsjeća na bivše medicinske ili farmaceutske profesije. Ovi svima dostupni digitalni podaci dragocjeni su za povijest medicine jer
omogućuju usporedbu prezimena geografski, po učestalosti i kroz vrijeme.
Although most studies underscore institutional change as replacement of one dominant logic for another and assume that professions are guided by a single logic, professions that operate in multiple ...institutional spheres often have plural logics. We focus on medical education, the supplier of medical professionals, which resides at the interstices between academia and healthcare. Using archival sources from 1910 to 2005, we identify two logics central to the profession that persisted over time: care and science. We found that jurisdictional competition with rivals such as public health, contestation among physicians, the rise of managed care, and increasing numbers of women entering medical schools are associated with increased attention to the care logic. Differentiation in the missions of medical schools is associated with reduced attention to the science logic. Our study reveals that plural logics of care and science in medical education are supported by distinct groups and interests, fluctuate over time, and create dynamic tensions about how to educate future professionals.
The creation of new roles commonly threatens the power and status of elite professionals through the substitution of their labour. In this paper we examine the institutional work carried out by elite ...professionals to maintain their professional dominance when threatened. Drawing on 11 case sites from the English National Health Service (NHS) where new nursing or medical roles have been introduced, threatening the power and status of specialist doctors, we observed the following. First, the professional elite respond through institutional work to supplant threat of substitution with the opportunity for them to delegate routine tasks to other actors and maintain existing resource and control arrangements over the delivery of services in a way that enhances elite professionals’ status. Second, other professionals outside the professional elite, but relatively powerful within their own professional group, are co-opted by the professional elite to engage in institutional work to maintain existing arrangements. Our work extends Lawrence and Suddaby’s typology of institutional work in three ways. First, we reveal how different types of institutional work interact, and how different types of institutional work cross categories of creating or maintaining institutions. Second, we show how an actor’s social position or status, both intra-professionally as well as inter-professionally, in the institutional field frame the institutional work they engage in. Third, the institutional work of ‘theorizing’ by professional elites appears particularly significant, specifically the focus of the institutional work to invoke the concept of ‘risk’ associated with any change in service delivery, which maintains the model of medical professionalism.
