In her discussion of "Mask Up," Annie Lee Jones pressures the two main metaphors in the essay, masks and masquerade, to ask what kinds of stories they license, articulating an important set of ...concerns for what the metaphors may obscure. The response considers oversights in the original essay and offers additional material to extend the conversation.
This book offers an up-to-date collection of works on metaphors in the area of organization studies. The mission of the book is to increase the interest for metaphor-based and metaphor-oriented ...research within the area of organization studies; further knowledge on “metaphor” can help to increase the potential of metaphor in organization studies. The book acknowledges the usability of metaphor and metaphors in the area of organization studies and also acknowledges the existence of, explores, and suggests solutions to challenges that metaphor use comes with, in order to stimulate further use of both metaphor and metaphors in organization studies. The book is an effort to offer a smorgasbord of current (at the beginning of the 2020s) works that in one way or another use metaphor or metaphors in the study of organizing and organizations. Some of the contributors are well established within the area of metaphor in organization studies, many of them having played major roles in the development of the field throughout the years. Others have more recently begun using metaphor and metaphors in their studies of organizations and organizing. The book contains, within the area of organization studies—broadly defined—chapters offering theoretical considerations on metaphor; chapters exemplifying the use of metaphors in organization studies; chapters discussing methods for using metaphors in research; chapters dealing with the use of metaphors in teaching as well as in practice; and chapters offering various perspectives on metaphor.
Towards an extended model of the conceptual integration of multi-metaphoric expressions.
The paper deals with metaphorical meaning of complex expressions. It is based on some weakness Conceptual metaphor Theory and Blending Theory show in handling multi-metaphoricity. On the one hand, Conceptual Metaphor Theory fails to explain how metaphors underlying a complex expression combine and yield its metaphorical meaning. On the other, in investigating multi-metaphoricity, Blending Theory does not suppose that mental spaces of conceptual networks are metaphorical in character. Our aim is to combine both models into a broad approach which will turn out to be more consistent with the complex structure of multi-metaphorical expressions. The model’s originality resides in conceiving of mental spaces as being populated by metaphorical rather than nonmetaphorical elements. Blending processes give rise to blended metaphors the role of which is to frame multi-metaphorical expressions’ meanings and to determine their specific illocutionary forces. We will apply this model to the proverbial expression “Jelly in a vise” and to the proverb “A rolling stone gathers no moss”. Such a choice is motivated by the many readings these proverbs have been shown to involve.
In the last decade, the problem of computational metaphor processing has garnered immense attention from the domains of computational linguistics and cognition. A wide panorama of approaches, ranging ...from a hand-coded rule system to deep learning techniques, have been proposed to automate different aspects of metaphor processing. In this article, we systematically examine the major theoretical views on metaphor and present their classification. We discuss the existing literature to provide a concise yet representative picture of computational metaphor processing. We conclude the article with possible research directions.
