The Mediterranean dessiccation theory suggests that during the Messinian the Mediterranean sea had almost completely dried up and a thick succession of evapo-rites was laid down. Due to dessiccation, the erosional base level through the whole Mediterranean area was lowered , with the consequent development of long and deep fluviatile canyons (e.g. Nile , Rhône, Var, etc.). This lowering strongly affected karst evolution. This paper concerns the karst in Lombardy, around the southalpine lakes. The old evolutionary models, predating the dessiccation theory, assume that the lacustrine valleys were scoured by the quaternary glaciers. In this case the karst should have been characterized by some features, like for example the altitudinal cave distribution as a consequence of the valley lowering after each glaciation. Seismic experiments through the lakes and their tributaries have shown that these valleys are deep fluviatile canyons. The study of caves has demonstrated that the caves themselves predate the entrenchment of the valleys and the glaciations. During the latter the caves were filled up and emptied several times, without any modifications of their inner morphology, including stalactites. Moreover the U/Th age determinations indicate that a great number of concretions are older than 350 ky, and that a few are older than 2.5 Ma. /4s a consequence a general model for karst evolution can be proposed. The former karst drainage system developed after the Oligo-Miocene emersion. Paleogeography obviously differed from the present day landscape, but the main valleys had already been scoured. During the Messinian the dramatic lowering of sea-level determined major changes in karstic evolution and a reorganisation of the karst drainage system that was consequently lowered considerably. The Pliocene transgression determined a new karst revolution, after which a great number of caves were located well below the sea-level base. This evolution occurred during a hot and wet climate period, with seasonal high flows and relevant discharges of the karstic rivers. Tlte great caves of the Lombardian karst developed within this climatic stage.
A coral reef buildup in the Djebel Chott (Western Dahra, Algeria) : a witness of the Middle Miocene maximum transgression in the Mediterranean. Coral reef buildup with Tarbellastraea anomala ...Mtchelotti, 1871 and Platycoenia turonensis Michelin, 1847, of Middle Miocene age, occur in a sandy-conglomeratic sequence on the substratum of the Oued Chelif mouth (Djebel Chott, Dahra, Algeria). The age of the reefs range from Langhian to Serravallian, with Praeorbulina glomerosa (Blow), 1956 (upper part of Blow N8 zone) and Globigerina nepenthes Todd, 1957 (N14 Blow zone), at the top. The reefal sequences are a witness of the Middle Miocene maxi¬ mum transgression event of the western Mediterranean.

The fossil anurans of Morocco remain rare and poorly known. The study of the anuran remains from the Upper Miocene (Vallesian) of Oued Zra has revealed a new discoglossid described as
Latoglossus ...zraus n. gen., n. sp. It is morphologically close to the Neogene European genus
Latonia. It differs from the latter and from all other discoglossids by the morphology of its angular
s.l. The Miocene discoglossid of Beni-Mellal, previously identified as
Discoglossus
11, assigned to
Latonia
8, 10, and then to
Discoglossus
9, might belong to this new taxon.
Geological and micropaleontological investigations of the "Pointe de Canastel." series pointed out four marine lithological formations belonging to two Post-Thrust-Sheet Miocene Cycles : 1) gypsy marls, 2) marls and red sandstones, 3) rubefied clays and conglomerates, 4) sandy marls. The first cycle (three first formations) is regressive. The second (fourth formation) is transgressive.
Biostratigraphical analysis based on Planktonic Foraminifera allows to date the first cycle from the Middle Langhian to Upper Serravallian stages and the second cycle from the Lower Tortonian.
These two Post-Thrust-Sheet Miocene Cycles are separated by a major discontinuity which is older in Northern Groove (Serravallian-Tortonian boundary : N15), than in the Median one (intratortonian : N16-N17 boundary).
