This article explores the dynamics of transnational business collaboration between UK and Asian music companies, focusing on Liverpool Sound City in the United Kingdom, Modern Sky in China and ...Zandari Festa in South Korea. The specificities of their music business, the nature and motivation for partnership, the respective industry infrastructure and state cultural policies give shape to the outcome of their collaborations, which in turn influence their music products, events, artists and audiences. The complexity of their business transactions and interactions also tell us how the live music sector and its ecologies continue to evolve and reposition themselves in the fast-changing environments of the global music industry. In reflection of an increased transnationalisation and diversification of the global music industries, it is argued that more attention should be given to the transnational and translocal ecologies of live music studies.

Higher Music Performance Education, as taught and learned in universities and conservatoires in Europe, is undergoing transformation. Since the nineteenth century, the master-apprentice pedagogical ...model has dominated, creating a learning environment that emphasises the development of technical skills rather than critical and creative faculties. This book contributes to the renewal of this field by being the first to address the potential of artistic research in developing student-centred approaches and greater student autonomy. This potential is demonstrated in chapters illustrating artistic research projects that are embedded within higher music education courses across Europe, with examples ranging from instrumental tuition and ensemble work to the development of professional employability skills and inclusive practices. Bringing together diverse and experienced voices working within Higher Music Education but often also as professional performers, this edited collection pairs critical reflection with artistic insight to present new approaches to curricula for teaching interpretation and performance. It calls for greater collaboration between Higher Education and professional music institutions to create closer bonds with music industries and, thereby, improve students’ career opportunities. Teaching Music Performance in Higher Education will appeal to scholars, performers, teachers, but also students whose interests centre on innovative practices in conservatoires and music departments.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had an overwhelmingly negative effect on the music industry in Kazakhstan. Music events had to close or cancel their performances, rendered unable to operate as usual. This ...sector has been struggling to cope with the pandemic because of the lack of the government support, digital skills, and difficulties in accessing software to record concerts or perform online. Given the need in the literature for surveys of music industry representatives on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in different geographic areas, this study utilised the survey approach. During the period of February-June 2021, we approached 102 representatives of the music industry across Kazakhstan. We have collected data on what impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on the music industry in Kazakhstan. The results of the survey demonstrate that the music industry stakeholders have lost a significant amount of income due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Our study has several policy implications that could be considered when developing the recovery strategy for the music industry in Kazakhstan. The policy makers need to consider the development of financial schemes to support artists in the time of the pandemic. It would be helpful to create grants to support the creative artists who are particularly struggling from the negative consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our results have demonstrated that it would be necessary to unite academics and musicians in associations that could advise them on the possibilities of obtaining grants and special support from state and independent foundations.

Demand spillovers between distribution channels are critical for revenue streams in the music industry. Drawing on consumption capital theory, this study investigates the impact of a subscription ...(unsubscription) or upgrade (downgrade) in music streaming on live, physical, and digital music consumption. The propensity score matching approach applied to a biannual panel with six waves indicates that conversion in music subscriptions spills over to the live market and changes willingness to pay (WTP) and demand for live events. Converting from no streaming or free streaming to a premium subscription leads to a particularly high surplus in WTP and demand for live music. Unsubscribing or downgrading a music subscription decreases WTP and demand for live events. However, changes in music subscriptions are rather unrelated to physical and digital purchases. A scenario analysis indicates that deleting the free streaming option outperforms restricting the features available to free users. The authors provide contingencies of this finding.
Subscription services for users with low or no cost access to vast libraries of music has initiated a decrease in revenue for musicians. The growing evidence of exploitation of creative workers in ...the subscription economy and the sparse scientific coverage of the artist perspective motivated this paper. Through in-depth interviews with musicians, it examines how labor changed for artists in the music industry through the rise of streaming platforms, specifically in the context of Germany. The findings show that the non-creative process takes up more of the artist’s time. Artists perceive their music as less of an artistic product and more as a marketing tool for their own brand. To support the non-creative tasks, artists leverage on data that platforms provide. We witness a re-intermediation in the music market as well as an increase in competition. This paper pushes the conversation on labor and precarity in the music industry that is fast becoming platformized.
