The sea is omnipresent in Greek life. Visible from nearly everywhere, the sea represents the life and livelihood of many who dwell on the islands and coastal areas of the Mediterranean, and it has ...been so since long ago-the sea loomed large in the Homeric epics and throughout Greek mythology. The Greeks of antiquity turned to the sea for food and for transport; for war, commerce, and scientific advancement; and for religious purification and other rites. Yet, the sea was simultaneously the center of Greek life and its limit. For, while the sea was a giver of much, it also embodied danger and uncertainty. It was in turns barren and fertile, and pictured as both a roadway and a terrifying void. The image of the sea in Greek myth is as conflicting as it is common, with sea crossings taking on seemingly incompatible meanings in different circumstances.
InThe Sea in the Greek Imagination, Marie-Claire Beaulieu unifies the multifarious representations of the sea and sea crossings in Greek myth and imagery by positing the sea as a cosmological boundary between the mortal world, the underworld, and the realms of the immortal. Through six in-depth case studies, she shows how, more than a simple physical boundary, the sea represented the buffer zone between the imaginary and the real, the transitional space between the worlds of the living, the dead, and the gods. From dolphin riders to Dionysus, maidens to mermen, Beaulieu investigates the role of the sea in Greek myth in a broad-ranging and innovative study.
Beyond its housing estates and identikit high streets there is another Britain. This is the Britain of mist-drenched forests and unpredictable sea-frets: of wraith-like fog banks, druidic mistletoe ...and peculiar creatures that lurk, half-unseen, in the undergrowth, tantalising and teasing just at the periphery of human vision. How have the remarkably persistent folkloric traditions of the British Isles formed and been formed by the identities and psyches of those who inhabit them? In her sparkling new history, Carolyne Larrington explores the diverse ways in which a myriad of imaginary and fantastical beings has moulded the cultural history of the nation. Fairies, elves and goblins here tread purposefully, sometimes malignly, over an eerie, preternatural landscape that also conceals brownies, selkies, trows, knockers, boggarts, land-wights, Jack o'Lanterns, Bargests, the sinister Nuckelavee, or water-horse, and even Black Shuck: terrifying hell-hound of the Norfolk coast with eyes of burning coal.Focusing on liminal points where the boundaries between this world and that of the supernatural grow thin - those marginal tide-banks, saltmarshes, floodplains, moors and rock-pools wherein mystery lies - the author shows how mythologies of mermen, Green Men and Wild Men have helped and continue to help human beings deal with such ubiquitous concerns as love and lust, loss and death and continuity and change. Evoking the Wild Hunt, the ghostly bells of Lyonesse and the dread fenlands haunted by Grendel, and ranging the while from Shetland to Jersey and from Ireland to East Anglia, this is a book that will captivate all those who long for the wild places: the mountains and chasms where Gog, Magog and their fellow giants lie in wait.
Gods dwell in human environments in multiple ways. They move into imaginary spaces and explore the cosmos. This book analyzes the mapping of gods through a specific lens: their naming. By proposing ...this new perspective, it sheds light on ritual practices and representations of gods in the whole Mediterranean, from Italy to Mesopotamia, from Greece to North Africa and Egypt. Names and spaces enable to better define, differentiate, and connect gods.

A Chinese Bestiary presents a fascinating pageant of
mythical creatures from a unique and enduring cosmography written
in ancient China. The Guideways through Mountains and
Seas, compiled between the ...fourth and first centuries b.c.e.,
contains descriptions of hundreds of fantastic denizens of
mountains, rivers, islands, and seas, along with minerals, flora,
and medicine. The text also represents a wide range of beliefs held
by the ancient Chinese. Richard Strassberg brings the
Guideways to life for modern readers by weaving together
translations from the work itself with information from other texts
and recent archaeological finds to create a lavishly illustrated
guide to the imaginative world of early China. Unlike the
bestiaries of the late medieval period in Europe, the
Guideways was not interpreted allegorically; the strange
creatures described in it were regarded as actual entities found
throughout the landscape. The work was originally used as a sacred
geography, as a guidebook for travelers, and as a book of omens.
Today, it is regarded as the richest repository of ancient Chinese
mythology and shamanistic wisdom. The Guideways may have
been illustrated from the start, but the earliest surviving
illustrations are woodblock engravings from a rare 1597 edition.
Seventy-six of those plates are reproduced here for the first time,
and they provide a fine example of the Chinese engraver's art
during the late Ming dynasty. This beautiful volume, compiled by a
well-known specialist in the field, provides a fascinating window
on the thoughts and beliefs of an ancient people, and will delight
specialists and general readers alike.
The purpose of this article is to analyze the documentary "Isto é Pelé" (1974, directed by Eduardo Escorel and Luiz Carlos Barreto), proposing a comparison between the audiovisual narrative of Pele's ...career, considered one of the greatest athletes in soccer's history, and Hero's Journey proposed by Joseph Campbell, one of the most renowned scholars of universal mythology. This book explores the ways in which contemporary authors respond to and rework key aspects of Old Norse history and viking culture for young twenty-first-century audiences. Why are contemporary ...authors and audiences so manifestly attracted to the viking past? In what ways do writers respond to Norse sources? How do the narratives they tell reflect our beliefs about and desires for the past, our constructions of childhood and adolescence, our anxieties around gender, sexuality, and ethnicity? How do these texts engage with a future occluded by apocalyptic ecological threat? David Clark explores these questions through readings of a rich body of diverse material which retells, updates, and transforms Norse culture. The volume contextualizes Norse medievalism and explores how thematic foci on gender, sexuality, disability, and ethnicity relate to contemporary concerns around these topics, and the construction of childhood.
