La malédiction des étoiles ou Le Mahabharata des femmes est une piece contemporaine indienne écrite en français par K. Madavane. Il s'agit d'une histoire tissée a partir d'une légende locale qui ...hante, depuis des générations, l'esprit et l'imagination d'une petite communauté tamoule en Inde. C'est l'histoire d'une jeune fille brulée au bÛcher par ses freres qui la soupçonnent injustement d'avoir eu une liaison amoureuse. L'écrivain y apporte une dimension universelle en évoquant quelques moments de la plus longue épopée du monde Le Mahabharata. Le réassemblage d'une légende et de l'épopée au sein d'un texte théátral, rendu encore plus complexe par le renversement de leurs statuts au sein du texte se prete a une analyse intéressante sur une telle fusion singuliere. L'écrivain s'engage-t-il a la création d'un discours mythique a partir de la légende et de l'épopée ou s'agit-il de la mythification des deux ? Vu qu'il existe toujours des variantes orales du Mahabharata, l'épopée ne se présente pas comme ferme a la création imaginaire. Pourtant, le sentiment religieux auquel l'épopée se trouve attachée remet en question sa manipulation littéraire au sein de la piece. L'écrivain arrive-t-il a désacraliser les personnages du Mahabharata pour les faire interagir avec les personnages du récit ? S'agit-il de séparer le mythe littéraire de la religion ou du sacré? D'ou vient alors la dimension mystérieuse nécessaire a la mythification du récit, sinon du sacré?

En el marco de la conmemoración del 400 aniversario del caso Galileo y la condena del heliocentrismo, hacemos una revisión de los conocimientos y contribuciones de España al inicio de la Revolución ...Científica en dos disciplinas clave como la Astronomía y la Mecánica. Mostramos el conocimiento que sobre las ideas astronómicas copernicanas se tenía en las Universidades y en instituciones vinculadas al Descubrimiento de América. Asimismo, analizamos la contribución de Domingo de Soto a la Mecánica Moderna. Se comprueba que España, al contrario de lo que suele creerse, estaba al día de los conocimientos que en Europa había sobre Astronomía e hizo contribuciones importantes en la Cinemática, estando por tanto a un nivel avanzado en comparación con los demás países de Europa. Se hace una reflexión sobre el atraso científico en España conforme avanza el siglo XVII analizando las diferentes razones que pueden explicar dicho retraso.
This book is an edition and translation of one of the most important and celebrated sources of Old Norse-Icelandic mythology and heroic legend, namely the medieval poems now known collectively as the ...Poetic Edda or Elder Edda. Included are thirty-six texts, which are mostly preserved in medieval manuscripts, especially the thirteenth-century Icelandic codex traditionally known as the Codex Regius of the Poetic Edda. The poems cover diverse subjects, including the creation, destruction and rebirth of the world, the dealings of gods such as Óðinn, Þórr and Loki with giants and each other, and the more intimate, personal tragedies of the hero Sigurðr, his wife Guðrún and the valkyrie Brynhildr. Each poem is provided with an introduction, synopsis and suggestions for further reading. The Old Norse texts are furnished with a textual apparatus recording the manuscript readings behind this edition’s emendations, as well as select variant readings. V 18. stoletju je Ruski imperij videl Rim kot model, ki ga je treba posnemati, Osmansko cesarstvo pa kot sovražnika, ki ga je treba uničiti. Francoski in francosko govoreči avtorji, kot so Voltaire, ...Friedrich Melchior Grimm, Chevalier d’Éon, Jean Sylvain Bailly, Volney, Prince de Ligne, Jean Potocki in drugi, so v svojih delih in v korespondenci s Katarino II. prikazovali Rusijo kot dedinjo antične civilizacije, ki naj bi oživila Grčijo. Vojne proti Turčiji so spodbujale politično in vojaško mitologijo, ki se je razvila v Rusiji in Evropi. Uradni cilj je bila osvoboditev pravoslavnih ljudstev izpod muslimanskega jarma, tj. napad na Krim, Moldavijo in Vlaško ter grške otoke. Nadaljnji cilji so bili zavzetje Istanbula, osvojitev Sirije in Palestine, krepitev ruske prisotnosti na Kavkazu in napad na Perzijo. Nazadnje naj bi si Poljsko razdelili s Prusijo in Avstrijo ter priključili ukrajinska in beloruska ozemlja. Teritorialna širitev in ustanovitev novih mest na jugu države sta Rusom omogočila, da so se predstavili kot potomci Skitov, Sarmatov in Amazonk ter kot zakoniti dediči kijevskih knezov, ki so napadli Konstantinopel in uvedli pravoslavno vero. Francoski glasniki Katarine II. in ruskih zmag so razglasili državo za zibelko ljudstev, ki so osvojila in civilizirala Evropo. Takšna mitologija je spodbujala vojne med Rusijo in Turčijo v 19. stoletju in žal spodbuja tudi sedanjo vojno.
The norns were a group of female supernatural beings closely related to ideas about fate in Old Norse tradition. Although the norns are well known, even to people who have only a superficial ...knowledge of Old Norse mythology, this is the first detailed discussion of them to be published amongst the literature dealing with Old Norse beliefs.

IN ONE OF MY FAVORITE moments in Siddhartha Deb's ambitious, multiple-strand, cross-genre epic The Light at the End of the World, a man stands before an oracular bull and tries to get it to give him ...counsel. The first (and last) chapters of the book belong to Bibi, an ex-journalist with "lefty credentials," now working as a copy-editor at a global consulting firm in a dystopian Delhi. Bibi is an odd, paradoxical figure, given to bouts of torpor and res-tiveness.
