Literary texts are understood within bounded frameworks, principally within national borders. As Benedict Anderson and Homi Bhabha demonstrated, print culture gave shape to nations, and literary ...canons were seen to “narrate the nation.” But what happens to our “bordered” classification system when texts emerge from migrant or diaspora writers ? One approach has been to label these works with a hyphen that bridges two national spaces, such as an Arab-American fiction. But does this hyphen take our analytical strategies beyond the border or does it merely reinforce the bordering analytical practices that underpin the work of literary criticism ? This paper will address these questions by focusing on contemporary Arab-American fiction. It will provide an overview of how Arab-American literature has been assessed as Arab or American, or a combination of both. It will demonstrate that the hyphen ironically reinforces borders by reproducing the idea of national literatures. To escape the boundaries imposed by national labels, this paper will argue that it is necessary to contextualise the work of Arab-American writers within a diasporic frame.
This paper explores ethnic, cultural and symbolic boundaries in a micro-region within the Mediterranean area of Istria, which is conceptualised as a multicultural, multi-ethnic and multilingual ...region. In scholarly writings and everyday speech, it is seen as a border zone where people construct multiple pure and hybrid identities. In this paper, I intend to explore some of the geographic, historical, political, and anthropological discourses that are present in the fieldwork location of Istria and North East Adriatic Sea as well as address the issue of national land and maritime borders and ethnic boundaries. I will focus on the border issues in the periods of political and ideological changes after World War II and after 1991, in the wake of the disintegration of Yugoslavia and the creation of Slovenia and Croatia as new post-socialist states. Particular focus will be on the issue of international arbitrage on the maritime and land border in 2017.
The relationship between state borders and identity has been a popular subject among border scholars. Despite this fact there is still relatively little conceptual and methodological discussion ...concerning borderland identities. This paper focuses firstly on the recent discussion of borders and identity, and secondly, it examines how narrative approach can contribute to our understanding of borderland identities. This is done by applying the narrative method to the analysis of individual border stories in the context of the Finnish-Swedish border. Narrative method provides an in-depth examination of the multidimensionality and multivoiceness in the construction of self. It is suggested that border scholars should be more critical when conceptualizing and classifying border identities in their empirical research. Identity can be linked with people's ethnic and linguistic ties but it often transforms through various border crossing practices and life projects. Borders materialize differently for different people, in different contexts and scales.

A joint effort led by the African Development Bank and the World Bank, 'Leveraging Migration for Africa' is the first comprehensive publication on harnessing migration, remittances, and other ...diaspora resources for the development of Africa. It comes at a time when countries in Africa and elsewhere are grappling with difficult choices on how to manage migration.Policy makers can help leverage the contributions of migrants to the development of Africa, reduceremittance costs, improve the efficiency of remittance markets in both origin and destination countries, and address the needs of the origin countries without restricting the emigration of high-skilled professionals. Innovative financing mechanisms such as issuance of diaspora bonds and securitization of future remittance flows can help finance big-ticket projects, such as railways, roads, power plants, and institutions of higher learning that will, step by step, help to transform Africa.
