Patients suffering from ascites and pleural fluid accumulation frequently have encounters with Oncology nurses. There is a need for increased education in the Oncology nursing field regarding the ...placement procedure, patient education, and management of patients with pleural and peritoneal drains. The purpose of this discussion is to shed light on the need for increased awareness surrounding peritoneal and pleural drains. In practice, I have accomplished the education of nurses regarding peritoneal and pleural drains by having in-depth discussions about how the drains are placed. Utilizing hands-on demonstrations for both the nurses and the patient allows them to align together on their understanding of drain placement and management. As there continues to be an increasing need for transitioning care into the home and out of the hospital setting, improved awareness of drain management can assist in driving that change. The Oncology nurse is instrumental in educating patients regarding the safety of peritoneal and pleural drains. There is a lack of evidence based knowledge dissemination on this topic. By creating awareness through discussion of safe practices we can continue to deliver quality nursing care to the Oncology patient population. This discussion will also address where the future of peritoneal and pleural drains could be headed.

Missed nursing care (MNC) is a worldwide patient safety issue. However, little is known about MNC in neonatal intensive care units (NICU). The aim of this paper is to explore the elements and factors ...influencing the occurrence of MNC in the NICU in a teaching hospital in Amman, Jordan.
The study used a qualitative descriptive design. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with NICU nurses. Purposeful sampling was used to select the participants and data collection was performed in the period August 2022 to September 2022. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis.
The participants included 15 female nurses. The majority of the participants held a bachelor's degree in nursing. Five themes emerged from the analysis of data namely: (1) Conceptualizations of MNC (2) Missed care elements in the NICU (3) Reasons behind MNC in the NICU (4) Consequences of MNC and (5) Strategies to reduce the occurrence of MNC. Feeding, changing diapers, monitoring vital signs, and medication administrationwere identified as missed care elements in the NICU.
The findings of this research may inform the development of interventions that may reduce missed care incidents in the NICU.
Addressing staff shortages and the provision of necessary materials and equipment appear to be the key factors that may reduce the frequency of MNC. Thus, enhancing patient safety and quality healthcare in this challenging healthcare environment.
•Missed nursing care (MNC) is a significant issue in emerging healthcare systems.•MNC in the neonatal ICU may also impact on the parent-nurse relationship.•Staffing impacts on MNC include the experience and attitudes of nurses.•Remedial strategies must focus on resource levels, training, and transparency.
Background & Aim: Providing nursing care occurs through work methods that ensure the organization and implementation of care: the functional work method, the teamwork method, the individual work ...method, or the reference nurse work method. This study aims to identify work methods that nurses adopt in a Portuguese hospital. Methods & Materials: A cross-sectional study was conducted in a hospital in northern Portugal. A non-probabilistic convenience sampling technique was used, and 627 nurses were enrolled. Data were collected between March and April 2023 using the “Nurses’ Work Methods Assessment Scale.” The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences was used to perform descriptive and inferential statistics, using the Mann-Whitney, Kruskal-Wallis, and Spearman’s correlation tests. Results: The individual method predominated, followed by the functional and teamwork methods. A lower adherence to the nurse reference method was observed. The variable “work context” was the most significant for the four working methods. In the individual method, the frequency of the variable “condition in which the profession is practiced” was higher in specialist nurses and, particularly, rehabilitation nursing specialists. The frequency of using the individual method is also higher when nurses have a master’s degree and training in nursing care organization methodology. Conclusion: The highest frequencies of the individual method are related to the level of training, suggesting the influence of training in adopting working methods in clinical practice. Although the reference nurse method points to better satisfaction of clients’ needs, nursing practice environments sometimes have inadequate conditions for its operationalization.

Background:
Compassion has long been advocated as a fundamental element in nursing practice and education. However, defining and translating compassion into caring practice by nursing students who ...are new to the clinical practice environment as part of their educational journey remain unclear.
Objectives:
The aim of this study was to explore how Chinese baccalaureate nursing students define and characterize compassionate care as they participate in their clinical practice.
Methods:
A descriptive qualitative study design was used involving a semi-structured in-depth interview method and qualitative content analysis. Twenty senior year baccalaureate nursing students were interviewed during their clinical practicum experience at four teaching hospitals.
Ethical considerations:
Permission to conduct the study was received from the Institutional Review Boards and the participating hospitals.
Results:
Baccalaureate nursing students defined and characterized compassionate care as a union of “empathy” related to a nurse’s desire to “alleviate patients’ suffering,” “address individualized care needs,” “use therapeutic communication,” and “promote mutual benefits with patients.” Students recognized that the “practice environment” was characterized by nurse leaders’ interpersonal relations, role modeling by nurses and workloads which influenced the practice of compassionate care by nursing personnel.
Conclusion:
Compassionate care is crucial for patients, nurses, and students in their professional development as well as the development of the nursing profession. In order to provide compassionate care, a positive practice environment promoted by hospital administrators is needed. This also includes having an adequate workforce of nurses who can role model compassionate care to students in their preceptor role while meeting the needs of their patients.
This study will explore the effects of high-quality nursing care (HQNC) for patients with lung cancer (LC) during the perioperative period (PPP).
A literature search will be performed at Cochrane ...Library, MEDLINE, EMBASE, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure since its inception until October 1, 2019. All electronic databases will be searched with no restrictions of language and publication status. Two authors will perform study selection, data collection, and study quality assessment, respectively. We will use RevMan 5.3 software for statistical analysis.
This study will summarize the latest evidence on assessing the depression, anxiety, quality of life, and adverse events of HQNC in patients with LC during PPP.
The results of this study may provide helpful evidence of HQNC on psychological effects in patients with LC during PPP.
