The Orchestral Revolution explores the changing listening culture of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Delving into Enlightenment philosophy, the nature of instruments, compositional ...practices and reception history, this book describes the birth of a new form of attention to sonority and uncovers the intimate relationship between the development of modern musical aesthetics and the emergence of orchestration. By focusing upon Joseph Haydn's innovative strategies of orchestration and tracing their reception and influence, Emily Dolan shows that the consolidation of the modern orchestra radically altered how people listened to and thought about the expressive capacity of instruments. The orchestra transformed from a mere gathering of instruments into an ideal community full of diverse, nuanced and expressive characters. In addressing this key moment in the history of music, Dolan demonstrates the importance of the materiality of sound in the formation of the modern musical artwork.
The Local Repertoire of Concerts Presented by the Conductor Mihai Guttman "Born in the interwar period (1926) in Petroșani, Mihai Guttman showed his early passion for music, and this passion ...determined him to be among the founding members of the Music School in Cluj in 1949. The orchestra of the school, established and led by him, has progressed to such an extent that in 1951 he held his first symphonic concert. Numerous compositions of the composer of Cluj Sigismund Toduță were presented for the first time by conductor Mihai Guttman. In addition to the concerts dedicated to the first auditions of Toduță, Mihai Guttman also promoted the creation of the young generation. Mr. Cornel Țăranu, at that time a young student, today a member of the Romanian Academy, composed several works for the choral ensemble led by conductor Guttman, mentioning the madrigals on the lyrics of József Attila, Ion Vinea, and Luci-an Blaga. For the 1964 premiere of the cantata “Stejarul lui Horea” by Cornel Țăranu, the choral part was prepared by Mihai Guttman. Also, the master from Cluj included in the repertoire of the ensemble works by Anatol Vieru, Vasile Jianu, Mihai Moldovan, Liviu Glodeanu and many others."
Berlioz frequently explored other worlds in his writings, from the imagined exotic enchantments of New Zealand to the rings of Saturn where Beethoven's spirit was said to reside. The settings for his ...musical works are more conservative, and his adventurousness has instead been located in his mastery of the orchestra, as both orchestrator and conductor. Inge van Rij's book takes a new approach to Berlioz's treatment of the orchestra by exploring the relationship between these two forms of control – the orchestra as abstract sound, and the orchestra as collective labour and instrumental technology. Van Rij reveals that the negotiation between worlds characteristic of Berlioz's writings also plays out in his music: orchestral technology may be concealed or ostentatiously displayed; musical instruments might be industrialised or exoticised; and the orchestral musicians themselves move between being a society of distinctive individuals and being a machine played by Berlioz himself.
PAUL GILSON (1865-1942), born and raised in Brussels, grew into a valued artist during the fin de siècle. He was and is known as an erudite composer, orchestrator, theoretician, critic, musicographer ...and educator. A prestigious Prix de Rome (1889) and his symphonic work La Mer (1892) made him known far beyond the national borders. Because of his remarkable commitment to wind music, and that of amateur orchestras in particular, we still remember Gilson today as the Father of Belgian wind music. Gilson's extremely versatile artistry resonated with numerous international trends. He closely followed current musical life at home and abroad and reported extensively in newspapers, magazines and radio broadcasts. At the conservatories of Brussels and Antwerp and as a private teacher, he managed to stimulate and sustainably influence a new generation of composers and musicians. That pedagogical passion also challenged Gilson to bundle his sharp insights into theoretical tracts. All of these facets of Gilson's life and work are the focus of this book, with a particular focus on his national and international importance. From his life to his correspondence with Russians, from his elaborate theories to his music for wind orchestras, opera music and compositions for horn and saxophone: the authors of this volume provide an in-depth and extensive insight into the character of Paul Gilson.

Tämän taiteelliseen tohtorintutkintoon sisältyvän tutkielman aiheena on sinfonisen puhallinorkesterin historia, nykytilanne sekä ohjelmisto. Ohjelmiston kartoittamisen tuloksena olen koonnut ...liitteenä olevan teosluettelon keskeisestä eurooppalaisesta sinfonisesta puhallinorkesterimusiikista 1900-luvun alusta nykyaikaan. Etsiessäni ohjelmistoa Euroopan eri maista sain mahdollisuuden tutustua lukuisiin puhallinmusiikin asiantuntijoihin, jotka kertoivat maansa puhallinorkestereiden historiasta, mikä auttoi ymmärtämään sävellysten taustoja ja puhallinmusiikin kehittymistä. Tutkielmassa pyrin tuomaan muusikkolähtöisestä näkökulmasta keskeisen eurooppalaisen puhallinorkesterin historian.
This study examines the representation of male and female musicians in world-class symphony orchestras. Personnel of 40 orchestras of three regions, the UK, Europe, and the USA, and distributions of ...men and women across the four orchestral departments, strings, woodwind, brass, and percussion, are compared. Significant differences in representation between orchestras of the three regions are reported. Practices adopted by orchestras when appointing musicians to vacant positions are reviewed and numbers of males and females appointed to rank-and-file and Section Principals are compared. Career patterns of male and female musicians are also compared. Increases in numbers of women appointed to orchestral posts in the last three decades are compared with increases in the proportion of women in the general workforce. The data of orchestral membership are then compared with the numbers of young people receiving tuition on orchestral instruments retrieved from a large national database (
= 391,000 students). Implications for the future of male and female representation in orchestral personnel are then considered.
