The proposed paper presents the results of a study on inquiries to the Language Consulations Service related to orthographic problems. Based on the classification and analysis of the received ...questions, also taking into account the reasons for seeking specialized linguistic help, the problems of standard language pronunciation are outlined, which are realized by users and accordingly give rise to the need of consultations, and, on the other hand, the orthographic phenomena of which there is a complete lack of user interest. Attention is also paid to the different ways in which the questioners react to the realized orthographic problems – either through a specific enquiry arising from a hesitation or by expressing a critical attitude towards a given orthographic phenomena. Conclusions are drawn regarding the reasons for the very low interest in orthoеpic issues in general among users.

The English language has undergone many sound changes in its long history. Some of these changes had a profound effect on the pronunciation of the language. A number of these significant instances of ...language evolution are generally grouped together and termed the 'Great Vowel Shift'. These changes are generally considered to be unrelated to other, similar long-vowel changes taking place a little earlier. This book assesses an extensive range of irregular Middle English spellings for all these changes, with a view to identifying the real course of events: the dates, the chronology, and the dialects that stand out as being innovative. Previous studies have shown that phoneme awareness, letter-sound knowledge, rapid automatized naming (RAN), and verbal memory span are reliable correlates of learning to read in English. However, the ...extent to which these different predictors have the same relative importance in different languages remains uncertain. In this article, we present the results from a 10-month longitudinal study that began just before or soon after the start of formal literacy instruction in four languages (English, Spanish, Slovak, and Czech). Longitudinal path analyses showed that phoneme awareness, letter-sound knowledge, and RAN (but not verbal memory span) measured at the onset of literacy instruction were reliable predictors, with similar relative importance, of later reading and spelling skills across the four languages. These data support the suggestion that in all alphabetic orthographies, phoneme awareness, letter-sound knowledge, and RAN may tap cognitive processes that are important for learning to read.

Das vorgelegte Buch beruht auf jahrelangen Erfahrungen, die der Autor in der Auseinandersetzung mit der Neuregelung der Orthografie von 1996 und insbesondere als Vertreter der Deutschen Akademie für ...Sprache und Dichtung im Rat für deutsche Rechtschreibung gesammelt hat. Im Ergebnis dieser Tätigkeiten wird ein vollständiges orthografisches Regelwerk für das Deutsche vorgelegt, das sowohl sachliche Konsistenz als auch Verständlichkeit anstrebt.Dem Regelwerk gehen zwei Kapitel voraus, in denen zunächst besprochen wird, wie die Begriffe 'Regel' und 'Regelwerk' zugänglich gefasst und auf den Wortschatz des Deutschen angewendet werden können. Im zweiten Kapitel geht es um die Spezifika der einzelnen Teile des Regelwerks, und zwar ausdrücklich auch unter der Fragestellung, warum die Neuregelung der Orthografie so schwer überwindbare Schwierigkeiten bei der Umsetzung in den Alltag des Schreibens und des Orthografieunterrichts hervorgerufen hat.Das Buch strebt keine weitere Modifikation der Neureglung an. So weit irgend möglich, halten wir uns an die amtliche Regelung. Es soll aber gezeigt werden, dass der deutschen Orthografie nichts Bedrohliches innewohnt, sondern dass sie - auch im Vergleich mit den Orthografien einiger Nachbarsprachen - ein historischer Glücksfall ist, den wir hegen und pflegen sollten.
Language deviations can seriously impact language rules and norms. Language deviations in non-formal texts can impact the production of formal texts. This study attempts to examine the orthographic ...deviations of the Javanese language in non-formal texts taken through Instagram. This study aims to describe the forms of orthographic deviations on social media. The data of this research are in the form of deviations at the orthographic levels obtained from the data source, namely Instagram through the @dagelan_jowo account. Documentation techniques collected the data. The data obtained were analysed descriptively qualitatively. The results showed that orthographic deviations consisted of phonological spelling errors, errors in capital letters, foreign languages, punctuation marks, and errors in the use of numbers. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that there are still negative attitudes found by Javanese speakers towards their language, as evidenced by the many deviations of Javanese language in both formal and non-formal texts.
