Party identification is an important predictor of voting preference, but because a growing percentage of voters do not express any party identification, alternative ways to anticipate voting ...preferences are required. Partisan slants in voters’ media consumption might offer a relevant proxy. With method triangulation, the current study explores whether media consumption prior to elections can predict voting preferences among independents. Depending on the media outlets adopted by voters and their partisan skew, as detected by Bert machine learning models, the authors calculate an overall partisan slant for each voter’s political information consumption. Data from a nationwide panel survey conducted in Taiwan affirm that their media diet “color” in 2019 can predict independent voters' choices in 2020.
This article examines the different use of internet memes between political party organisations and partisan spaces. We analyse the relationship between organisational logics and memes as a genre ...characterised by participation. We conduct a mixed-methods analysis of the internet memes posted by five Australian political parties, their youth branches, and partisan meme spaces during the 2022 Australian federal election. We identify three styles of memetic content created by political parties and partisans: professional, generic, and participatory. We argue that these different kinds of meme each relate to particular organisational logics, with the hierarchical structures of professional election campaigns largely hollowing out the participatory potential of internet memes in both production and form.
This paper aims to present the group portrait of the Communist female resistance fighters during World War II in Belgrade. Following its pre-war political agenda, the Communist Party of Yugoslavia ...entered the war with a program of complete gender equality. But these ideological-theoretical concepts were not equally successfully implemented during the war. The case of female resistance fighters, and their position in the anatomy of resistance, is one of the more successful examples of women’s emancipation and achieved equality. The paper presents in detail all the leading positions that women held in the illegal resistance movement. The roles in which female resistant fighters could find themselves during the war in occupied Belgrade are defined and analyzed. This paper is based on primary sources from the Historical Archives of Belgrade and the Archives of Yugoslavia, interviews with former female partisans, relevant scholarly literature, and published memoires.
The decision processes behind the formation of Britain's wartime policies represented the intersection of multiple, sometimes competing variables, from political to military and from immediate to ...long-term. There remain unanswered questions that arise from these competitions and contradictions within the British government's, oftentimes multi-track policies, which hold far-reaching implications for understanding events. Britain's policies of support for resistance movements in occupied Yugoslavia during the Second World War serve as a striking example. The historical understanding of how British policy developed concerning Yugoslavia, its motivations, objectives, and how these were defined and prioritized by the individuals and agencies involved with these processes, represents a small but deeply contentious corner of Second World War literature, wherein much remains unresolved. This article, based on doctoral research carried out at the Defence Studies Department of King's College London, analyses the forces that shaped British policy concerning Yugoslavia in the light of what Graham Allison has called 'the essence of decision.' That is, by looking to the British government as a policy arena and examining the 'official mind(s)' of the policy community in that context, highlighting the multiple overlapping forces, both internal and external, that interacted in shaping the evolution of British policy. By resurveying various British archives, it has been possible to resolve many longstanding historiographical disputes, as well as present new alternative approaches to viewing British policy development concerning Yugoslavia. Those findings, presented here, suggest a view of Britain's Yugoslav policy that was far more reactive and constrained than previously presented. The reality of the British government, its policy development, and its chosen course is far more chaotic and disjointed than the 'all behind you, Winston' myth, and when viewed with this appreciation present British policy development as less sensation, but far more remarkable.
The article looks into the issue of technocratic cabinets, an increasingly common phenomenon exemplified by recent cases of technocratic governments being established in several European countries. ...Despite the growing prevalence of such cabinets, there is a lack of literature on the given issue. Scholars have addressed technocratic cabinets mostly through single-case studies that confined themselves to analysing technocratic cabinets in individual countries; there are almost no comparative studies. This fact leaves a number of pending questions open to further research. The article reviews major findings from studies on technocratic cabinets conducted to date, critically assesses and improves some of the concepts and presents key questions yet to be addressed in the researching of technocratic governments across Europe.

This article focuses on the history and main activities in the search and identification of Lithuanian partisans, commonly known as the “Forest brothers”. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the ...search for partisans was chaotic and unprofessional, leading to extensive exhumations without professional provision, and reburial without further identification of the remains. Only after regaining independence, the Lithuanian government supported official surveys and even re-exhumations of the partisans. These new investigations were led by esteemed historians, archaeologists, and anthropologists, and provided results that conflicted with former activities. The overall outcome could be summarized as a division between an “official history” asserted by the Soviet Union, and results coming from a collaboration between forensic archaeology and forensic anthropology specialists. The thorough results and overall conclusions led to two main accomplishments: the identification of partisans, including some prominent figures of this movement, and the manner of death, through the evidence of undocumented torture.
The article examines the issues of the anti-fascist struggle in the Ak-Sheikhsky district of the Crimean ASSR during the Great Patriotic War and the assistance of patriots to the intelligence of the ...51st Army of the 4th Ukrainian Front. The purpose of the article is to analyze the above-mentioned scientific problems on the basis of previously unpublished documents from the funds of the municipal archive of the Administration of the Razdolnensky district, the State Archive of the Republic of Crimea and the Yalta Historical and Literary Museum. The research methods used are source studies, historical and typological, retrospective, statistical and biographical methods.
The author focuses on the problem of organizing the underground movement in the territory of the Akh-Sheikh region from the middle of 1942, on the role of A.A. Mikhailov, authorized by the Crimean Regional Committee of the All-Union Communist Party of Bolsheviks, in uniting disparate underground groups into an integral cohesive structure, analyzing the activities of the underground workers of the Ak-Sheikh region district, on the establishment of contacts by patriots of the Ak-Sheikh region with intelligence structures of the 51st Army of the 4th Ukrainian Front (late 1943 – early 1944).
The study revealed previously unpublished materials on the activities of the underground movement on the territory of the Akh-Sheikhsky, the Larindorfsky, the Krasno-Perekopsky regions of the Crimean Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. The contribution of the undergrounders to the common cause of the anti-fascist struggle, as well as the creation of conditions for the successful liberation of the Peninsula from the German-Romanian occupation in the spring of 1944 was noted.
