iThis is the first dedicated study of the musical patronage of a Roman baronial family in the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Patronage – the support of a person or institution and their ...work by a patron – in Renaissance society was the basis of a complex network of familial and political relationships between clients and patrons, whose ideas, values, and norms of behavior were shared with the collective. Bringing to light new archival documentation, this book examines the intricate network of patronage interrelationships in Rome. Unlike other Italian cities where political control was monocentric and exercised by single rulers, sources of patronage in Rome comprised a multiplicity of courts and potential patrons, which included the pope, high prelates, nobles, and foreign diplomats. Morucci uses archival records, and the correspondence of the Orsini and Colonna families in particular, to investigate the local activity and circulation of musicians and the cultivation of music within the broader civic network of Roman aristocratic families during the period. The author also shows that the familial union of the Medici and Orsini families established a bidirectional network for artistic exchange outside of the Eternal City, and that the Orsini-Colonna circle represented a musical bridge between Naples, Rome, and Florence.
Western policymakers, political activists and academics alike see patronage as the chief enemy of open, democratic societies. Patronage, for them, is a corrupting force, a hallmark of failed and ...failing states, and the obverse of everything that good, modern governance ought to be. South Asia poses a frontal challenge for this consensus. Here the world's most populous, pluralist and animated democracy is also a hotbed of corruption with persistently startling levels of inequality. Patronage as Politics in South Asia confronts this paradox with calm erudition: sixteen essays by anthropologists, historians and political scientists show, from a wide range of cultural and historical angles, that in South Asia patronage is no feudal residue or retrograde political pressure, but a political form vital in its own right. This volume suggests that patronage is no foe to South Asia's burgeoning democratic cultures, but may in fact be their main driving force.

This work offers a refreshingly different perspective on Pakistan - it documents the evolution of Pakistan's structure of power over the past four decades. In particular, how the military ...dictatorship headed by General Zia ul Haq (1977–1988) - whose rule has been almost exclusively associated with a narrow agenda of Islamisation - transformed the political field through a combination of coercion and consent-production. The Zia regime inculcated within the society at large a 'common sense' privileging the cultivation of patronage ties and the concurrent demeaning of counter-hegemonic political practices which had threatened the structure of power in the decade before the military coup in 1977. The book meticulously demonstrates how the politics of common sense has been consolidated in the past three decades through the agency of emergent social forces such as traders and merchants as well as the religio-political organisations that gained in influence during the 1980s.

This thesis examines learned activity in Scotland between 1679 and 1689, with reference to its political and intellectual circumstances. During this decade, Scotland saw extensive patronage and ...institutionalisation of the learned professions. Professional men of letters sought, and benefited from, the patronage of James, Duke of Albany and York, and King, to enhance their identity and status. Such aspirations included the ‘advancement of learning’ in Scotland, led by ‘Royalist virtuosi’. The patronage of learned activity in the 1680s responded to and accelerated existing aspirations among the professional classes in Scotland. Its form, its objects and its methods were shaped by the political and ideological contexts of the Stuart monarchy, and influenced by links with the pre-war court and by developments in England and Europe. The thesis examines contemporary printed works, primary sources published subsequently, and manuscript correspondence, notes, and collections of documents, to build a comprehensive picture of the patronage of learned activity, its motivation and effects. These sources are placed in historiographical context to illuminate what is distinctive about Scottish learned activity during this decade. Chapter One considers the significance to the patronage of learning of Stuart ideology and political praxis. Chapters Two and Three examine the ‘advancement of learning’, and its patronage, in medicine and law, discussing the influence of geographical, historical, political and social contexts on professional institution building, and on the structure and subject matter of related work and publications. Chapter Four compares this with the patronage of learned activity in the church and universities, and in the city of Edinburgh. In Chapter Five, this activity is situated in the domestic tradition of the ‘virtuoso’, and in extensive connections with the ‘republic of letters’ in England and Europe. The Conclusion looks at the longer-term effect of the patronage.
I examine the evolution of the socio-literary image of female middle-ranking producers of text in the late Heian period, and how it was informed by different understandings of domesticity and its ...interplay with the public sphere—both in these authors’ work and in later re-contextualisations; discussing relations between these writers and higher ranking patrons/husbands, the negotiation of loss of control over textual production and public persona, and it contemplates questions of patronage, forced circulation, and intertextuality. In order to do so, it focuses primarily on the power dynamics underlying the portrayal and significance of domestic and household-centred literary circulation in women-authored texts and others that exemplify their reception; addressing firstly, the different ways in which household and court-based kana nikki 仮名日記 (diary, memoir) authors conceptualise domesticity and their position within it as a tool to articulate their relation to broader society, and secondly, how they respond and negotiate around this conception. This thesis presents a comparative approach to different modes of authorship, dynamics of patronage, questions of publicity, the circulation of women-authored texts, and their relation with the sphere of domesticity; and finds itself in the intersection between premodern literature and Queer studies.
This thesis explores the construction of cittadini identity in early modern Venice, by looking at social relationships and artistic patronage in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The cittadini ...were the middle stratum of Venice’s social hierarchy, located below the patriciate or nobility and clearly distinct from the popolani, the lower stratum of the population. The cittadini profoundly shaped society and culture in early modern Venice even though they were prohibited from ruling the Republic: only members of the patriciate could belong to governing bodies of the state. All the same, cittadini were the only members of the population allowed to run the six scuole grandi, which were the major lay confraternities in the city. They also took active roles in religious institutions and they influenced the cultural networks of the time. The project focuses on the analysis of Venetian confraternities, parish churches and humanistic circles, and argues that these were the optimal spaces for the construction of cittadini identity. By using an interdisciplinary methodological approach, the project breaks new ground by contextualizing the part played by social relationships and the arts in affirming and displaying the prestige of the cittadini in early modern Venice. This work combines extensive archival research with analyses of architecture, gardens, paintings, portraits, sculpture, engravings, inscriptions, tomb slabs, carvings, illuminations and ephemeral arts. The chronological scope of the thesis investigates changes in cittadini identity between the mid-sixteenth century, when the group obtained legal recognition, and the second half of the seventeenth century, when the patriciate opened up, for the first time in centuries, to some high profile cittadini families. My analysis of the middle stratum of Venetian society reveals new dimensions of their attempts to elevate their position. This work sheds light on our grasp of social hierarchy and the possibilities for social mobility in pre-modern Europe.
