Reviewing and updating performance measurement systems (PMS) based on internal and external environmental changes are as important as developing and implementing them. The results of an action ...research study carried out to improve the PMS of an energy company's maritime transportation area are presented. The findings of this longitudinal study illustrate the difficulty and complexity of reviewing and updating an energy company's PMS for its maritime transportation area. This difficulty is due to the involvement of PMS users, the assessment of performance measures, the establishment of targets, and data availability. The complexity is related to the changes in information technology when implementing changes in procedures for computing performance measures. This article contributes to a better understanding of the process of reviewing and updating a company's existing PMS.
► Our findings have shown the difficulty and complexity in reviewing and updating an existing PMS. ► The difficulty is related to the involvement of users of PMS, the assessment of performance measures, and data availability. ► Complexity is related to changes in information technology to implement the change in procedure for computing the measures.
Public–private partnerships (PPPs) are widely used to procure public infrastructure assets and are an effective mechanism for ensuring value for money. However, many PPPs in Australia have been ...plagued with controversy as they have experienced significant cost and schedule overruns during construction. Critical to the successful delivery of PPP projects is effective performance measurement/evaluation. Yet, conventional ex-post evaluation that solely focuses on meeting budget and a predetermined schedule are invariably applied to measure PPPs in practice. This paper reviews the performance measurement literature used to evaluate PPP projects and proposes that a life-cycle approach to their evaluation is needed to ‘future proof’ their performance and ensure value for money that is delivered to the public sector. As the primary focus of PPPs is to maximise profitability, there is a need to ameliorate the coordination and integration between the Special Purpose Vehicle, end-users and the public sector. This can be enabled through the adoption of Building Information Modelling (BIM) as it not only provides digital representation of the physical and functional characteristics of an asset, but also provides key decision makers with the ability to make informed decisions across a project's life-cycle. When aligned with a series of core indicators that are used for performance measurement, it is suggested that BIM can act as a catalyst for ‘future proofing’ PPPs and enable the successful management of an asset throughout its life-cycle.
•Suggests that BIM can be used to future proof assets and ensure value for money•Identifies key performance indicators for PPP projects•Demonstrates how BIM can be used to contribute to PPP performance measurement

Purpose – Scholars in the field of performance measurement tend to use the term business performance measurement (BPM) systems without explaining exactly what they mean by it. This lack of clarity ...creates confusion and comparability issues, and makes it difficult for researchers to build on one an each other's work. The purpose of this paper is to identify the key characteristics of a BPM system, by reviewing the different definitions of a BPM system that exist in the literature. This work aims to open a debate on what are the necessary and sufficient conditions of a BPM system. It is also hoped that a greater level of clarity in the performance measurement research arena will be encouraged.Design/methodology/approach – The performance measurement literature is reviewed using a systematic approach.Findings – Based on this research, a set of conditions of a BPM system has been proposed from which researchers can choose those which are necessary and sufficient conditions for their studies.Research limitations/implications – The analysis in this paper provides a structure and set of characteristics that researchers could use as a reference framework to define a BPM system for their work, and as a way to define the specific focus of their investigations. More clarity and precision around the use of the BPM systems phrase will improve the generalisability and comparability of research in this area.Originality/value – By reviewing the different definitions of a BPM system that exist in the literature this paper will hopefully stimulate a debate on the necessary and sufficient conditions of a BPM system and encourage a greater level of clarity in the performance measurement research arena.
Supply Chain Performance (SCP) is a critical issue in most industries. Organizations expect to enhance their SCP because it allows better competitiveness through minimizing useless resources ...activities, unsatisfactory delivery times, noncompliant quality, overproduction, etc. In this context, this paper provides an overview of the methods in use in Supply Chain Performance Measurement (SCPM) and investigates the most used methods for data collection, approaches, and data analysis techniques in order to measure SCP. This study was based on 180 of 682 related articles, published from 2008 to 2019, which were collected from the Crossref and Sciencedirect databases. Articles were reviewed in order to update methods and techniques which are the most used to define and analyze this performance, both in academic research or industrial case studies. Findings of this work can be very helpful to researchers and practitioners to know similitude and difference of each method, approach and tool exploited in the field of SCPM, in their particular area of activity.
