The concept of permaculture was created by Bill Mollison and David Holmgren (1978)2 and proposes a way of living in harmony with nature, potentializing resources and generating surpluses along with a ...collaborative and not competitive mindset. From this proposal, a better life quality is intended. One of its main points is permaculture ethics, based on taking care of earth, people and generation of surpluses under time,money and energy terms. Mollison and Holmgren call this life based ethics a proposal of a different life style based on a culture that lasts in time and is in harmony with nature,thus being a commitment with the conservation of earth.

The loss of productive soil through erosion, salination, desertification, and other consequences of ecologically unsound land use is an environmental problem confronting a number of countries, ...particularly in the developing world. Ways in which food systems are being ecologically undermined are surveyed and analyzed. Concrete examples of serious ecological deterioration that is taking place through deforestration, overgrazing, soil erosion and abandonment, desertification, the silting of irrigation systems and reservoirs, and changes in frequency and severity of flooding are provided. The increased intensity of humanity's pressure on the land and short-sighted use practices are compounded by natural phenomena. Destruction of land decreases future world feeding capacity which increases the threat of both malnutrition and mental deficiency
Those of us in affluent countries forget that life is lived on land and because of land; we forget our eyes are set forward as ecological predators, mammalian hunters, gardeners and foragers who are ...also from time to time transformed into ecological prey. We forget human wealth is not the accumulation of abstract figures and derivatives that string-line across digital screens in the hearts of cities and banner across the bottom of television screens in our lounge rooms. This is imagined, temporary wealth. This is momentarily cooking the books. Monetary economics is a phantasm of symbols curated by anthropocentric salesmen and women. Wealth, in real terms, is the land's capacity to give forth. Abstract figures and derivatives have been presented to us as wealth, but today they really represent the debts of ecological overshoot. The physical effects of such debts have accrued slowly from the first organizational systems developed in the earliest cities. Aggregating abstraction is what history has witnessed and recorded since the advent of symbolic life, but none so monumentally as during the last three centuries, and none so aggressively as during the past three decades.
As upland farmers in Southeast Asia change from shifting cultivation to permanent agriculture and lose access to swidden-fallow forests and their resources, they are introducing economically ...important forest and fallow plants into their house gardens. We describe this process in Daka, a village of Hani ethnicity in Yunnan Province, China. Daka smallholders collect both seeds and seedlings from fallow forests and transfer the plants to house gardens, initiating the transformation of wild species to a cultivated or semi-domesticated one. Two kinds of species are commonly transferred from swidden fallows to house gardens. Some are particularly rare, others are plants in great demand. Between 1998 and 2000 Daka households earned an average of US$68.20 annually from the products of fallow forests. We also found that villagers harvest and use 76 plant species from fallow forests and 126 species from house gardens. Twenty-two species found in house gardens that had been transferred from fallow forests. Households vary widely in the frequency with which they engage in this pattern. We believe that local knowledge of these practices is a potentially important resource in the development of other areas of smallholder farming.

Known by many monikers, this emerging sector of controlled-environment agriculture has generated a lot of buzz over the past few years- particularly since 2020, when the pandemic threw supply chains ...into upheaval and communities saw food insecurity rates skyrocket. Today, venture capitalists and economic developers alike are investigating and investing in what some are calling the future of food. Urban agriculture (UA), or the cultivation of food in cities, is as old as cities themselves. Traditionally, UA comprises community gardens, urban farms, backyard or patio gardens, and cultivation of space-thrifty animals (like chickens). Many practitioners of traditional UA lean into regenerative agriculture and permaculture practices that reconnect farming with nature. Digital urban agriculture (DUA) is a different variety of UA. A technology-driven form of indoor food production, DUA is also known as Z-farming (zero-acreage farming) or building-integrated agriculture. Implementations range from rooftop greenhouses and vertical plant factories to shipping container farms, edible walls, and other indoor growing approaches. Generally speaking, its growing practices rely on one of three technological methods: hydroponics, aeroponics, or aquaponics. All three systems depend on artificial lighting, HVAC systems to control temperature, and automation technology-which has made these sites big energy consumers and expensive to set up and operate.
