Vasser-Elong offers insights about naming and ancestry. He talks about attending naming ceremony in Silver Spring MA. Names are important, they let the world know who you are and, in many cases, where you come from. To think that his story began all those years ago, in the annals of antiquity.
This article deals with the new trend of giving and changing personal names and self-naming among the Oromo in Ethiopia in the context of the post-1991 Ethiopian political landscape. The post-1991 ...situation indicates the ever-increasing introduction of new forms of Oromo personal names and the change of non-Oromo names into Oromo. Interview, focus group discussion, observation and document analysis were used to obtain qualitative data. The findings of the study indicate that there are various factors contributing to the introduction of new styles of crafting and changing personal names among the Oromo. These involve social values, political feelings, identity construction, personal benefit and various combinations of these. Yet there are still controversies on the social, political and linguistic implications of the newly emerging Oromo personal names. Some of our informants argued that the fashionable Oromo names do not sound like Oromo terms, both in their structure and pronunciation. They have veiled mean-ings (or are disguised names) with conflicting aspirations of returning to Oromo names on the one hand and disassociating oneself from conventional Oromo names on the other.
This paper synthesizes and summarizes a selection of literature—largely anthropological and ethnographic, published between the early 18th and early 21st centuries—that describes the practice of ...renaming a person who is physically ill in order to affect their recovery. In none of these publications is this particular practice central; rather, it is often mentioned alongside myriad other cultural and naming practices. While no claim is made as to the exhaustive nature of the literature review, this analysis reveals patterns and similarities related to the reasoning behind such a practice and the special relationship between personal names and physical health in a wide variety of world cultures.

Mit den dialektalen Hausnamen existiert neben dem offiziellen Personennamensystem auch ein inoffizielles Referenzsystem innerhalb von dörflichen Kommunikationsgemeinschaften. Dieses System ist als ...Folge veränderter Kommunikationsbeziehungen seit Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts im Abbau begriffen. Der Beitrag stellt die Ergebnisse einer Studie vor, in der für das mittelhessische Dorf Großseelheim die Kenntnis und der Gebrauch dörflicher Hausnamen erhoben und mit soziolinguistischen und soziodemographischen Eigenschaften der Sprecher/innen in Verbindung gebracht wurden. Die statistische Auswertung zeigt, dass insbesondere Dialektgebrauch, Ortsfestigkeit und Alter einen Einfluss auf die Bekanntheit der Hausnamen und die Kenntnis der damit bezeichneten Personen haben.
Es gibt Menschen, die andere nicht mit ihrem Namen ansprechen können, wollen oder dürfen. Dieser Beitrag untersucht typische Situationen und Kontexte, in denen solche Unterlassungen stattfinden, die ...jeweils anders motiviert und mit unterschiedlichen Konsequenzen behaftet sind. Dazu wird eine Korpusuntersuchung (DeReKo des IDS) herangezogen mit 371 Belegen für das Nicht-in-den-Mund-Nehmen überwiegend von Personennamen. In den meisten Fällen handelt es sich um willentliche Unterlassungen gegenüber Rivalen, Konkurrentinnen, missliebigen Personen oder Verbrechern. Mit Blick auf das Unvermögen, den Unwillen oder das Verbot, Namen auszusprechen, wird umgekehrt deutlich, was die Nennung des Personennamens alles zu leisten in der Lage ist. Es ergeben sich jedoch Ambivalenzen, denen gemeinsam ist, dass Namensnennungen einen Menschen „anleinen" und damit sicht- und kontrollierbar machen. Einerseits nimmt man durch die Namensnennung das Gegenüber wahr, lädt es zur Interaktion ein und bestätigt es als Person – andererseits kann dies das Gegenüber auch nötigen, beleidigen und zu einer Reaktion zwingen. Letzteres kann zu Namenmeidungen und Namentabus führen. Diese bestehen eher in hierarchischen Gesellschaften, die sozial niedrigstehenden Menschen den namentlichen Zugriff auf statushohe Personen verwehren und mit Strafe belegen.
In this article the name of the Sumerian god Isimu is analysed as “who brings the shoots forth” and explained by the chthonic character of his master Enki. Investigated is as well the ratio behind ...the complex writing of his name and the names of other servants of Enki. Beside this it is shown that Isimu must have been known at least since the time of the archaic texts from Ur. There was also another Janus like mythical being, the male and female Ara, at one point identified with Isimu.
