The aim of this study was to analyze the profile of premium personal training clients and evaluate their motivations for the practice of physical activity and hiring the service, as well as their ...perception of quality and appreciation of it. A survey was conducted of 92 participants identified as premium clients in different training centers in several cities of Spain. The results indicated that the profile of these clients presented an average age of 40 years and was characterized by a high motivation for improving health, a high level of service demands and a high tendency to loyalty. In addition, it was observed that the women valued significantly higher the empathy and responsiveness of the coach, the technical and motivational aspects, and the practice of health. On the other hand, it was found that participants who had been clients of personal training for longer, valued more the motivational aspects of the service, suggesting that this could be a key factor for loyalty. In conclusion, it can be affirmed that, in addition to the technical issues, the psychological, emotional and interpersonal skills of the coach are fundamental for their evaluation by the clients and for professional success.
•Similarity on a characteristic may be goal-relevant or incidental.•Goal-relevant similarity provides diagnostic information.•Goal-relevant similarity is prioritized over incidental ...similarity.•Goal-relevance depends on buying situations.
Jiang, Hoegg, Dahl, and Chattopadhyay (2009) demonstrated that customers prefer a service provider who shares incidental similarity, such as having the same birthday. However, customers often choose from multiple service providers simultaneously. It is unclear which specific shared characteristics will influence choice in any given buying situation. Although all similarity may lead to a personal connection, goal-relevant similarity also provides diagnostic information that is related to customer buying goals while incidental similarity does not. This research consists of four experimental studies that demonstrate specific benefits and limitations of incidental similarity. When there are multiple service providers, customers will prefer providers with goal-relevant similarity over incidental similarity. However, when customers share goal-relevant similarity with multiple providers, customers then use incidental similarity to further narrow down their choice. Finally, characteristics are not inherently “goal-relevant” or “incidental,” but rather vary based on customer buying need and situational factors.
This paper presents a study of vocalisations, i.e., non-lexical sounds, in video-filmed sessions of gym training where one personal trainer (PT) and three clients are working out together. The object ...of study are series of vocalisations performed in connection with series of physical exercises, and the participants' orientation to change in such series is explained using the notion of professional vision (Goodwin 1994, 2013, 2018). We use sequential analysis of the multi-modal interaction, focusing on the PT's interactional work to make changes in series of vocalisations accountable. Our results show how vocalisations are recycled by the PT, transformed in new interactional contexts and thereby rebuilt into new social actions such as correcting, criticising or instructing. The under-specified nature of vocalisations (Keevallik and Ogden 2020) gives the PT an opportunity to reuse them as objects of knowledge for the members of the group, sharing his professional vision in co-operative actions (Goodwin 2013). The study potentially contributes not only to research into vocalisations as one of humans' communicative resources for inter-subjective understanding, but also to the analysis of professional practices used for providing physical health-care.
•A series of vocalisations is coordinated with a series of a physical gym exercises.•Changes in the series of vocalisations are oriented to as accountable.•Vocalisations can be recycled and transformed into new social actions.•Sequential analysis shows that vocalising can be performed as co-operative actions.•The interactional work done is explained by Goodwin's notion of professional vision.
•Physical training was well tolerated and improved aerobic and muscle function.•Physical exercise of MG patients can be transferred to the community setting.•Well controlled MG patients can adhere to ...personal training regimens in a public gym.•This pragmatic case series supports individualized physical training in MG patients.
Although supervised aerobic and resistance training in a hospital setting was proven safe and beneficial for well-controlled myasthenia gravis (MG) patients, implementation of similar programs in the community has not been studied. We conducted a pragmatic open-label study at a large gym in Uppsala, Sweden. Seven patients with generalized MG were recruited to participate in an individualized, tailored exercise program, based on individual baseline status and personal goals, with a personal trainer. All patients completed the entire training period. The individually tailored exercise program was implemented safely and effectively, with all patients improving in aerobic capacity, muscle strength, and balance. Our pragmatic open-label case study suggests that well-controlled patients with generalized MG can extend their physical exercise to personal training in the gym. This is an essential step towards reducing the barriers to implementing exercise procols and increasing the availability of these interventions to MG patients.
A qualitative analysis of motivational factors for resistance training in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: experiences from The Granheim COPD Study Background: Regular resistance exercise ...provides beneficial health effects for people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and constitutes a natural component of lung rehabilitation programs. However, the patients' personal experience with such training remains largely unstudied. The purpose of this qualitative study was to map experiences with resistance training in participants enrolled in The Granheim COPD Study. Material and method: Eight out of 24 study participants with COPD (women/men, n=3/n=5; COPD grade II/III, n=4/n=4; age, 64-79 years) conducted semi-structured, qualitative interviews during the 5th week of a total 13 weeks of resistance training. Findings: Overall, for all study participants with COPD, the training adherence was high (97%), with a concomitant low dropout rate (n=2 of 22) during the training period. The informants experienced a fairly high and increasing level of motivation for exercise training during the intervention. This was related to close personal follow-up from experienced personnel and a sense of security during training sessions, as well as an increased feeling of self-efficacy and competence. Interpretation: In subjects with COPD, the increasing motivation for conducting resistance training was closely associated with personal guidance from experienced supervisors during training sessions. Close follow-up from qualified personnel thus seems to be a prerequisite for achieving beneficial physical activity habits among such patients.
The aim of this study was to develop a physical activity advisory system supporting the correct implementation of sport exercises using inertial sensors and machine learning algorithms. Specifically, ...three mobile sensors (tags), six stationary anchors and a system-controlling server (gateway) were employed for 15 scenarios of the series of subsequent activities, namely squats, pull-ups and dips. The proposed solution consists of two modules: an activity recognition module (ARM) and a repetition-counting module (RCM). The former is responsible for extracting the series of subsequent activities (so-called scenario), and the latter determines the number of repetitions of a given activity in a single series. Data used in this study contained 488 three defined sport activity occurrences. Data processing was conducted to enhance performance, including an overlapping and non-overlapping window, raw and normalized data, a convolutional neural network (CNN) with an additional post-processing block (PPB) and repetition counting. The developed system achieved satisfactory accuracy: CNN + PPB: non-overlapping window and raw data, 0.88; non-overlapping window and normalized data, 0.78; overlapping window and raw data, 0.92; overlapping window and normalized data, 0.87. For repetition counting, the achieved accuracies were 0.93 and 0.97 within an error of ±1 and ±2 repetitions, respectively. The archived results indicate that the proposed system could be a helpful tool to support the correct implementation of sport exercises and could be successfully implemented in further work in the form of web application detecting the user's sport activity.
