•We develop Persona Perception Scale (PPS), which is a survey instrument for evaluating how individuals perceive personas.•The scale is based on relevant literature from social psychology, persona ...studies, and human-computer-interaction domains.•We validate the scale with 412 survey respondents and find that the constructs and items of the scale perform satisfactorily for scale deployment into wider use of both researchers and practitioners.•Using the PPS, researchers can e.g. investigate persona users’ perceived credibility of the persona and their willingness to use it.•Practitioners can use the PPS to understand how the personas they developed are perceived by persona users. Because perceptions are associated with adoption of personas, PPS can be used for improving the chances of persona adoption in a wide range of professional contexts.
Although used in many domains, the evaluation of personas is difficult due to the lack of validated measurement instruments. To tackle this challenge, we propose the Persona Perception Scale (PPS), a survey instrument for evaluating how individuals perceive personas. We develop the scale by reviewing relevant literature from social psychology, persona studies, and Human-Computer Interaction to find relevant constructs and items for measuring persona perceptions. Following initial pilot testing, we conduct an exploratory validation of the scale with 412 respondents and find that the constructs and items of the scale perform satisfactorily for deployment. The research has implications for both academic researchers and persona developers. Using the PPS, researchers and designers can evaluate how different persona designs affect individual perceptions of personas, for example persona users’ (e.g., designers, marketers, software developers) perceived credibility of the persona and their willingness to use it. Because persona perceptions are associated with persona acceptance and adoption, using a perceptual measurement instrument can improve the chances of persona adoption and use in real organizations.
•Research literature suggests that fewer than ten personas should be created to avoid overloading persona users with too many choices.•We conducted an in-person user study with 37 participants to ...investigate how persona users’ recall of persona details, perceptions of personas, and user behavior differed when using 5 and 15 personas with the help of an interactive persona system.•There were no differences in terms of participants recalling less persona information, recalling the information wrong, or perceived the personas as less empathetic or more confusion when using fewer personas.•In turn, using more personas, the participants exhibited higher overall engagement, were provided with a more demographically diverse end-user representation, and subsequently chose personas from more varied demographic groups.•The participants also adjusted their persona usage behavior by making more use of navigational system features and information snapshot within the interactive system, which suggests interactive persona systems help users cope with more personas even when exceeding the conventional “less than ten” rule of thumb.
Studies in human-computer interaction recommend creating fewer than ten personas, based on stakeholders’ limitations to cognitively process and use personas. However, no existing studies offer empirical support for having fewer rather than more personas. Investigating this matter, thirty-seven participants interacted with five and fifteen personas using an interactive persona system, choosing one persona to design for. Our study results from eye-tracking and survey data suggest that when using interactive persona systems, the number of personas can be increased from the conventionally suggested ‘less than ten’, without significant negative effects on user perceptions or task performance, and with the positive effects of increasing engagement with the personas, having a more diverse representation of the end-user population, as well as users accessing personas from more varied demographic groups for a design task. Using the interactive persona system, users adjusted their information processing style by spending less time on each persona when presented with fifteen personas, while still absorbing a similar amount of information than with five personas, implying that more efficient information processing strategies are applied with more personas. The results highlight the importance of designing interactive persona systems to support users’ browsing of more personas.
Human-computer interaction (HCI) research is facing a vital question of the effectiveness of personas generated using artificial intelligence (AI). Addressing this question, this research explores ...user perceptions of AI-generated personas for textual content (GPT-4) and two image generation models (DALL-E and Midjourney). We evaluate whether the inclusion of images in AI-generated personas impacts user perception or if AI text descriptions alone suffice to create good personas. Recruiting 216 participants, we compare three AI-generated personas without images and those with either DALL-E or Midjourney-created images. Contrary to expectations from persona literature, the presence of images in AI-generated personas did not significantly impact user perceptions. Rather, the participants generally perceived AI-generated personas to be of good quality regardless of the inclusion of images. These findings suggest that textual content, i.e., the persona narrative, is the primary driver of user perceptions in AI-generated personas. Our findings contribute to the ongoing AI-HCI discourse and provide recommendations for designing AI-generated personas.
BACKGROUND // The term trans brings together all transgender identities. The early social transition towards the affirmed gender
has benefits in the child’s development. For families, transit is a ...period of great uncertainty, requiring support aimed at families of
trans minors. The aim of this paper was to explore the needs and experiencies of parents and close-relatives who supported the
social transition of their children.
METHODS // We worked with focus groups of functional families of transgender minors who had begun the transition (n=14), with a
medium-high educational level and who belonged to urban areas of Tenerife. Through a semi-structured interview, they commented
on their experiences in the process of supporting the social transition of their children. The data was recorded in a video recording and
processed through content analysis and categorization.
RESULTS // Early social transition had positive and immediate benefits on child development as well as in the reduction of anxiety.
There was a general improvement in mood, self-esteem, and social and family relationships. The accompaniment of specialists and
associations helped in the different social situations and favoured resilience.
CONCLUSIONS // Early social transition is positive in the personal and socio-family sphere of the minor. To improve their resilience,
families demand accompaniment in this process, as well as meeting other trans people who serve as transpositive references. In
addition, they point out the need for specific training in health professionals.
In this work, we build on research on data-driven personas to present what might be “wrong with them”. From wrong assumptions by the client and wrong applications of methods to imbalanced, messy, or ...superficial data; a lack of communication regarding how these personas are created; and issues with usability, there are a plethora of issues that plague data-driven personas. We conclude by contemplating whether data-driven personas are even worthwhile and, if they are, then what are some of the immediate remedies required from the human-computer interaction community to make data-driven personas a viable tool for user understanding.
Background: Personas are a technique for enhanced understanding of users and customers to improve the user-centered design of systems and products. Their creation can be categorized using three ...persona creation methodologies: Qualitative, Quantitative, and Mixed Methods. Despite the apparent differences in these methodologies, no previous review has systemically compared and contrasted the strengths and weaknesses of each of these methodologies for persona development. Method: This manuscript maps and navigates persona literature to identify the benefits and challenges of these three persona creation methodologies. Furthermore, the strategies and opportunities of the different methodologies are presented. Results: The results summarize the strengths and weaknesses of each of the three principal persona creation methodologies and offer suggestions of the benefits of their employment. Conclusion: In conclusion, we offer insights into the construction and usage of personas for practitioners and researchers, and we propose a framework to determine which persona creation methodology is most suitable for a given context.
