The present study aimed to investigate the phenolic profile of second grade date extracts and evaluate their antimicrobial and cytotoxic activities with regard to some pathogenic microorganisms. Phenolic content was analyzed by HPLC. Antimicrobial activity was evaluated by the agar disk diffusion method, and in vitro cytotoxic activity was examined by cell proliferation assay. The results revealed that second grade dates presented three benzoic acids, five cinnamic acids and two flavonoids, with the predominance of ρ-coumaric acid (1998.80μg/100g). The antimicrobial activities showed that the date extracts were active against Gram (+) and Gram (−) bacteria, showing marked activity against Escherichia coli with an inhibition zone of 25mm. Cytotoxicity assays showed that the date extracts were able to inhibit the proliferation of HeLa cell lines. The results confirmed that the date extracts were rich in biologically active compounds that are highly valued in the functional food and nutraceutical industries.
The antioxidant and antimicrobial effects of guarana seed extracts (GSE) added to pork patties were evaluated for 18 days storage at 2 ± 1 °C. Five treatments were prepared: i) without natural ...antioxidant control (negative control), ii) with BHT at 200 mg/kg (positive control), and iii) with three different concentrations: 250 mg/kg (guarana seed low dose-GSL), 500 mg/kg (guarana seed medium dose-GSM) and 1000 mg/kg (guarana seed high dose-GSH) of guarana extracts, respectively. The pH, instrumental colour (CIE L*, a*, b*), total viable counts (TVC), Pseudomonas spp. counts and lactic acid bacteria (LAB) counts, 2-thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and carbonyl content were determined after 0, 7, 11, 15 and 18 days of storage period. The in vitro antioxidant activity together with the phenolic profile of GSE was also studied. Microbial analysis showed that GSE had no antimicrobial activity on pork patties. The untargeted UHPLC-ESI-QTOF approach confirmed the wide phenolic composition of GSE able to explain the antioxidant power (28.2 g/kg of phenolic equivalents). Low doses (GSL) of GSE were able to preserve the values of colour parameters, obtaining higher L*, a* and b* values during storage, which is reflected in the lowest colour differences during storage (ΔE*0–18 = 4.56). TBARS and carbonyls values in GSE added samples were lower than control and BHT ones. GSL and GSM provided better results than the synthetic antioxidant (0.08 and 0.07 vs 0.18 mg MDA/kg; 2.47 and 3.13 vs 3.23 nmol/mg, for GSL and GSM vs BHT, respectively). These findings show that GSE are very effective against colour deterioration, lipid and protein oxidation in pork patties and possessing the potential to be used as natural antioxidants.

This study aimed to determine the effect of different drying methods namely, hot air drying (HAD), freeze-drying (FD), vacuum drying (VD), and ultrasound-assisted vacuum drying (USVD) on drying ...kinetic, total bioactive compounds, lycopene and β-carotene, phenolic composition and color quality of rosehip. Drying times of the rosehips for USVD, VD, and HAD were 180, 300, and 1140 min, respectively, indicating that USVD significantly reduced drying time of rosehip. The results of total bioactive compounds, lycopene and β-carotene, phenolic composition showed that FD resulted the highest bioactive compounds, followed by VD, USVD, and HAD. DPPH and CUPRAC results showed that FD dried samples showed highest antioxidant activity than fresh and all dried samples while HAD showed lowest antioxidant activity. USVD and FD exhibited a lower ΔE value than HAD and VD, indicating that they had similar color properties to the fresh sample. USVD resulted in lower drying time and color change than VD and HAD, while USVD showed lower bioactive compounds retention than VD. This study suggested that USVD could be used as an alternative to HAD due to its lower drying time and higher bioactive compound and color retention than HAD.

The effect of pitanga leaf extracts, as source of natural antioxidants, on physicochemical properties as well as lipid and protein oxidation of pork burgers during storage at 2 ± 1 °C, packed under ...modified atmosphere, was assessed. Formerly, the in vitro antioxidant and antimicrobial activities as well as the phenolic profile of pitanga leaf extracts were also studied. Thereafter, five samples were prepared, including control (without antioxidants), commercial synthetic antioxidant (BHT at 200 mg/kg) and three concentrations of pitanga leaf extracts: PLL (at 250 mg/kg), PLM (at 500 mg/kg) and PLH (at 1000 mg/kg). The predominant phenolic compounds identified in pitanga leaf extracts were hydroxycinnamic acids, followed by tyrosol and other phenolics (alkylmethoxyphenols, hydroxycoumarins and hydroxyphenylpropenes). Pitanga leaf extracts showed a high antioxidant and antimicrobial in vitro activity. The addition of pitanga leaf extracts improved the redness of pork burgers during the whole display. On the other hand, the addition of natural antioxidants decreased the lipid oxidation from day 7 till the end of storage period. Burgers with antioxidant showed a similar protein oxidation level, observing an inhibition between 36% and 49% compared to control treatment. From the results, it can be concluded that pitanga leaf extract is a good alternative to commercial synthetic antioxidants to improve the quality and extend the shelf-life of pork burgers.

The natural tendency of polymicrobial infections and co-habitation of bacteria and Candida are currently well-recognized and reported as highly fatal. This kind of interaction is usually associated ...with drug tolerance, infection relapse, persistence and high mortality. The interest in natural products has emerged and their potential applicability as therapeutic strategies is being constantly explored.
The main goal of this work is to evaluate the effect of the hydroethanolic extract of Glycyrrhiza glabra, and Manuka honey, in Staphylococcus aureus and Candida tropicalis planktonic cells and single and mixed biofilms.
The effect of both the G. glabra extract and the honey was evaluated by determination of the minimum inhibitory/bactericidal/fungicidal concentrations and by determination of their antibiofilm activity (alone and in combination) on single and mixed-species biofilms. In addition, phenolic compounds were characterized in the hydroethanolic extract with high performance liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry.
Among the phenolic compounds identified in the G. glabra extract, flavonoids were the most abundant (≈75 % of the total phenolic compounds), with liquiritigenin being the most representative. S. aureus and C. tropicalis were susceptible to both antimicrobials acting alone. When tested in combination, a significative synergism was observed against C. tropicalis single biofilm formation. Instead, the combination showed an additive effect against mixed biofilms of S. aureus and C. tropicalis. In general the combination G. glabra+honey showed a broader antibiofilm effect than each partner alone.
The results showed the good anti S. aureus and C. tropicalis effect of G. glabra and manuka honey against both pathogens tested and highlighted their potential use in combination as therapeutic strategy to combat S. aureus, C. tropicalis and mixed species infections particularly when growing as biofilms.

Coleostephus myconis (L.) Rchb.f. (Asteraceae) is a species with ruderal growth and persistence in abandoned soils, being characterized for its plentiful yellow flowering between March and August. Despite its botanical relevance, C. myconis had never been studied neither for its antioxidant activity, nor individual phenolic compounds. Herein, the antioxidant activity of different botanical parts: stems and leaves (green parts), floral buds, flowers in anthesis and senescent flowers, was studied in selected extracts (ethanol, ethanol:water 1:1 and water) through different chemical and biochemical assays. In addition, the phenolic profiles of the hydroethanolic extracts of each botanical part were also characterized by liquid chromatography with diode array detection and electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (LC-DAD-ESI/MSn). The antioxidant activity was significantly modulated by the extract type, with the hydroethanolic extracts showing the highest antioxidant activity, especially those obtained from the senescent flowers and floral buds. The phenolic profiles were the same for all flowering stages (with quantitative differences), but that characterized in the green parts were quite different. Floral buds gave the highest contents in phenolic compounds, mainly due to the contribution of 3,5-O-dicaffeoylquinic acid and myricetin-O-methyl-hexoside. Overall, C. myconis showed an interesting potential to be included in different industrial applications.
Globally, sorghum is one of the most important but least utilized staple crops. Sorghum grain is a rich source of nutrients and health‐beneficial phenolic compounds. The phenolic profile of sorghum ...is exceptionally unique and more abundant and diverse than other common cereal grains. The phenolic compounds in sorghum are mainly composed of phenolic acids, 3‐deoxyanthocyanidins, and condensed tannins. Studies have shown that sorghum phenolic compounds have potent antioxidant activity in vitro, and consumption of sorghum whole grain may improve gut health and reduce the risks of chronic diseases. Recently, sorghum grain has been used to develop functional foods and beverages, and as an ingredient incorporated into other foods. Moreover, the phenolic compounds, 3‐deoxyanthocyanidins, and condensed tannins can be isolated and used as promising natural multifunctional additives in broad food applications. The objective of this review is to provide a comprehensive understanding of nutrition and phenolic compounds derived from sorghum and their related health effects, and demonstrate the potential for incorporation of sorghum in food systems as a functional component and food additive to improve food quality, safety, and health functions.
The aim of this work was to determine phenolic profile and antioxidant properties of methanolic (MEP) and ethanolic (EEP) extracts of monofloral bee-collected sunflower pollen from Serbia. In total, ...37 different polyphenols (19 flavonol glycosides and 18 other polyphenols) were identified by UHPLC/MS-MS Orbitrap analysis. The different phenolic profile of MEP and EEP was observed with flavonols as most abundant, 94.1% (MEP) and 93.4% (EEP), out of which flavonoid glycosides represented 73.2% (MEP) and 66.1% (EEP). The higher amount of total phenolics was recorded in EEP (200.58 mg/kg DW) than in MEP (244.44 mg/kg DW). The quercetin 3-O-galactoside was the major compound in both extracts, 112.86 mg/kg in MEP and 128.64 mg/kg in EEP. The presence of coumaroylated and acetylated flavonoid glycosides were registered, among which the quercetin 3-O-(6“-acetyl)hexoside was recored in the significant amount in MEP (111.10 mg Q3G/kg DW), whereas in EEP the content of coumaroylated kaempferol glycosides (137.95 mg Q3G/kg DW) was significantly higher. The ferric reducing power and ABTS radical scavenging activity assays revealed that pollen extracts possessed significant antioxidant activity. The monofloral bee-collected pollen of Helianthus annuus L. can be used as good food supplement with high flavonoids content and antioxidant activity.

Jackfruit is a rich source of phytochemicals, thus offering a broad perspective in developing value-added healthy nutritional foods. This research compares the content of phenolic compounds and ...antioxidant capacity in different jackfruit genotypes. In the results of total soluble phenols (TSP), the genotype "Agüitada" showed the highest values at the end of storage life (1.43 mg of gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/g in dry weight (DW)), as well as in 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay with 7.82 mmol of trolox equivalent (TE)/g DW. The "Licenciada" genotype obtained the highest ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and 2,2′-Azino-bis-(3-Ethylbenzothiazoline-6-Sulfonic Acid) (ABTS•+) assays values, with 244.29 and 12.08 mmol TE/g DW, respectively. Phenolic profiling by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to a diode array detector (HPLC-DAD) quantified 28 phenolic compounds, with shikimic acid being the most abundant in all genotypes; flavonoids were also identified, with epigallocatechin standing out. The results obtained in phenolic profile, TSP and antioxidant capacity showed sufficient evidence of differences among all genotypes. This information will generate interest among consumers and will revalue this developing crop.

Several studies have related moderate consumption of red wine with prevention of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). According to epidemiological studies, those regions with high ...consumption of red wine and a Mediterranean diet show a low prevalence of CVD. Such an effect has been attributed to phenolic compounds present in red wines. On the other hand, by-products obtained during winemaking are also a significant source of phenolic compounds but have been otherwise overlooked. The cardioprotective effect of red wine and its byproducts is related to their ability to prevent platelet aggregation, modify the lipid profile, and promote vasorelaxation. Phenolic content and profile seem to play an important role in these beneficial effects. Inhibition of platelet aggregation is dose-dependent and more efficient against ADP. The antioxidant capacity of phenolic compounds from red wine and its by-products, is involved in preventing the generation of ROS and the modification of the lipid profile, to prevent LDL oxidation. Phenolic compounds can also, modulate the activity of specific enzymes to promote NO production and vasorelaxation. Specific phenolic compounds like resveratrol are related to promote NO, and quercetin to inhibit platelet aggregation. Nevertheless, concentration that causes those effects is far from that in red wines. Synergic and additive effects of a mix of phenolic compounds could explain the cardioprotective effects of red wine and its byproducts.
