Evolutionary Phonology is a theory of sound patterns which synthesizes results in historical linguistics, phonetics and phonological theory. In this book, Juliette Blevins explores the nature of ...sounds patterns and sound change in human language over the past 7000–8000 years, the time depth for which the comparative method is reasonably reliable. This book presents an approach to the problem of how genetically unrelated languages, from families as far apart as Native American, Australian Aboriginal, Austronesian and Indo-European, can often show similar sound patterns, and also tackles the converse problem of why there are notable exceptions to most of the patterns that are often regarded as universal tendencies or constraints. It argues that in both cases, a formal model of sound change that integrates phonetic variation and patterns of misperception can account for attested sound systems without reference to markedness or naturalness within the synchronic grammar.

L’emploi des signes syllabiques m̃ et ñ est régi par des règles d’écriture strictes, alors que leurs réalisations ne sont pas invariablement syllabiques. On montre que ces signes ont des réalisations ...non syllabiques dans des contextes où la co-articulation d’une consonne nasale et d’une occlusive modifie les propriétés phonétiques de cette dernière. L’expression graphique fondée sur la solidarité des symboles d’écriture dans des configurations où les nasales sont syllabiques, devient, par suite, transposables aux situations où les modification du son associé à la nasale sont phonétiquement requises alors que les nasales ne sont plus nécessairement syllabiques. La distribution des nasales dans les contextes où elle sont syllabiques indique, en outre, des réalisations différenciées selon l’entourage segmental, en mettant en évidence des conditionnements dont l’intrication offre une justification plausible à leur représentation individualisée dans l’écriture.

Cet article s’interroge sur les bases phonétiques des théories traitant de la structure interne des segments. Il porte un regard sur la naissance et le développement de l’idée que le phonème n’est ...pas le constituant ultime de la chaîne phonique indissociable en unités plus petites, mais le produit de l’association d’une liste finie de paramètres universels appelés différemment par les divers modèles : traits, éléments, gestes. La rupture avec la conception « atomique » du phonème et l’élaboration des théories des primitives phonologiques vont cependant de pair avec une complication du formalisme et une hermétisation de la phonologie par son isolement de la phonétique.
This paper questions the phonetic bases of the theories dealing with segments’ internal structure. It takes a look at the rise and the development of the idea that the phoneme is not the ultimate constituent of the speech stream which cannot be broken down into smaller units, but the association product of a finite inventory of universal parameters called differently by different frameworks: features, elements, gestures. The break with the “atomic” conception of the phoneme and the elaboration of the phonological primitives theories go, however, hand in hand with a complicated formalism and with the hermetization of phonology by its estrangement from phonetics.
Words whose consonant articulation locations move inward (from the front to the back of the mouth) are preferred over words with the opposite consonant articulation location direction, a phenomenon ...termed the in-out effect. Recently, an alternative explanation for the in-out effect has been proposed based on position-weighted consonant preferences instead of articulation location movement preferences. However, this explanation has only been tested with word fragments. In two experiments, we tested these explanations using both, word fragment and pseudo-word stimuli. For word fragments, preferences could be explained by position-weighted consonant preferences, while, for pseudo-words, stimuli containing articulation location movement were evaluated more favourably than stimuli not containing articulation location movement. Thus, the in-out effect for word stimuli depends on movement of articulation locations. This finding demonstrates that a word's sound symbolic meaning cannot always be explained by its individual letters but can depend on letter sequences.

Laut- und Formlehre umfasst Phonologie und ...Morphologie der germanischen Dialekte zwischen dem 7. Jh. und der 2. Hälfte des 11. Jahrhunderts im hochdeutschen Sprachraum. Die hohe Anzahl der Auflagen spricht für die kontinuierliche Aktivität auf dem Forschungsgebiet und für die unübertreffliche Qualität des Werkes. Die Erstauflage wurde im Jahr 1886 von dem wichtigen Junggrammatiker und Mediävisten Wilhelm Braune herausgegeben. Sie ist Teil der Sammlung kurzer Grammatiken germanischer Dialekte und bildet mit anderen historischen Grammatiken, z. B. die Mittelhochdeutsche Grammatik von Herman Paul (1881, 2007), die Althochdeutsche Grammatik: II. Syntax von Richard Schrodt (2004), die Gotische Grammatik von Wilhelm Braune (1880, 2004) u. a., die Basisbibliothek vor allem für diachrone LinguistInnen und MediävistInnen. Diese Rezension beruht auf dem Vergleich mit der von Ingo Reiffenstein bearbeiteten 15. Auflage (2004).
