During his journey on the Beagle, Darwin observed the uniformity in the elevation of coastal Eastern Patagonia along more than 2000
km. More than one century later, the sequences of Quaternary ...shorelines of eastern Patagonia have been described and their deposits dated but not yet interpreted in terms of geodynamics. Consequently, we i) mapped the repartition of the Quaternary coastal sequences in Argentinean Patagonia, ii) secured accurate altitudes of shoreline angles associated with erosional morphologies (i.e. marine terraces and notches), iii) took into account previous chrono-stratigraphical interpretations in order to calculate mean uplift rates since ~
440
ka (MIS 11) and proposed age ranges for the higher and older features (up to ~
180
m), and iv) focused on the Last Interglacial Maximum terrace (MIS 5e) as the best constrained marine terrace (in terms of age and altitude) in order to use it as a tectonic benchmark to quantify uplift rates along the entire passive margin of Eastern South America. Our results show that the eastern Patagonia uplift is constant through time and twice the uplift of the rest of the South American margin. We suggest that the enhanced uplift along the eastern Patagonian coast that interested Darwin during his journey around South America on the Beagle could originate from the subduction of the Chile ridge and the associated dynamic uplift.
The Cuicuilco archaeological site is an early Mesoamerican Preclassic ceremonial and urban center in the Basin of Mexico. The site is characterized by a round-section pyramid and several ...well-preserved stone structures that were covered by lava flows and tephras by the ∼2000 yr old Xitle volcanic eruption. This article presents results from a gravity study to investigate the underground structure. Site gravity anomalies show a gradient trend from southeast to northwest related to the lava flow cover and underlying topographic relief. A semi-circular gravity anomaly high of around 6 to 8 mGals marks the circular main pyramid. The survey also detects two small amplitude anomalies on the eastern side of the pyramid, just north of the access ramp. The main access western ramp does not show any associated gravity anomaly. No other anomalies are observed around the pyramid structure in the surrounding excavated area. The gravity anomaly over the lava field masks any possible anomalies associated with other buried structures likely to be present in the site.
Bahia Esperanza, constituting the NE tip of the Antarctic Peninsula, is made up of Paleozoic clastic sedimentary rocks overlain by a Jurassic volcano-sedimentary series and intruded by Cretaceous ...gabbros and diorites. The area is located along the southern part of the Pacific Margin magnetic anomaly belt.
Field magnetic researches during February 2010 contribute to determining the deep geometry of the intermediate and basic intrusive rocks. Moreover, the new field data help constrain the regional Pacific Margin Anomaly, characterized up to now only by aeromagnetic and marine data. Field magnetic susceptibility measurements of intrusive intermediate and basic rocks, responsible for magnetic anomalies, ranges from 0.5×10−3 SI in diorites to values between 0.75×10−3SI and 1.3×10−3SI in gabbros. In addition, a significant remanent magnetism should also have contributed to the anomalies. The regional magnetic anomaly is characterized by a westward increase from 100nT up to 750nT, associated with large intrusive diorite bodies. They probably underlie most of the western slopes of Mount Flora. Gabbros in the Nobby Nunatak determine local residual rough anomalies that extend northwards and westwards, pointing to the irregular geometry of the top of the basic rocks bodies below the Pirámide Peak Glacier. However, the southern and eastern boundaries with the Buenos Aires Glacier are sharp related to deep glacier incision. As a result of the glacier dynamics, magnetic anomalies are also detected north of the Nobby Nunatak due to the extension of the anomalous body and the presence of gabbro blocks in the moraines.
The Bahia Esperanza region is a key area where onshore field geological and magnetic research allows us to constrain the shape of the crustal igneous intrusions and the basement glacier geometry, providing accurate data that complete regional aeromagnetic research.
► Gabbros and diorites are responsible of the Pacific Margin Anomaly in Bahia Esperanza. ► Field magnetic measurements are essential to ground truth aeromagnetic data. ► Magnetic anomalies on ice-covered areas highlight glacier basement and dynamics. ► Basic rocks are resistant and led to the development of nunataks.
The purpose of photogrammetric restitution is the reconstruction of the volumes, now lost, located along the road that crosses the village, on the left side of the photo. The reconstruction of points ...in space from twodimensional images is possible if these photos are projective figure and we have at least two projective oriented stars. The first image is a vintage photograph, the second is a figure reconstructed from an aerial photo of AM in 1938 and from the survey of the masonry still present at the site. For the survey, one of the two projective stars is assimilated to a class of vertical straight lines. With regard to photography, the problem is decomposed into two typical phases of photogrammetric processes: the internal orientation and the absolute orientation. For the absolute orientation we used the method of the pyramid vertex which, in use since the Eighteenth Century, consists in determining the projection center from three given points of which are known the positions in space.
