Combining remote sensing data and socio-economic data to quantitatively analyze urban growth is a topic growing in importance. We used square grid cells to investigate the spatial and temporal ...dynamics of urban growth in the Tokyo, Japan, metropolitan area by using remote sensing imagery from 1972 to 2011 and census population data from 1970 to 2010. First, we used the subspace classification method to produce land-cover maps by using Landsat images from 1972, 1987, 2001, and 2011. Next, we integrated the land-cover maps with basic grid cell maps (using the standard 1km2 grid cell system of Japan) to represent the proportion of each land-cover category within each 1km2 grid cell area. Finally, we combined the proportional land-cover maps and population census data to investigate the relationship between land-cover changes and population density change based on grid cells. By using grid cells it is straightforward to (i) integrate remote sensing, geographic information system (GIS), and statistical data within the cells; (ii) quantify land-cover changes in terms of the percentage of area affected and rates of change and compare them with population census data; and (iii) analyze the spatial-temporal dynamics of urban growth patterns. Between 1972 and 2011 the rapid expansion of the urban area was accompanied by extensive shrinking of the agricultural area around the new settlements. As a result, the urban growth rate exceeded the population growth rate by more than a factor of 2.6. We used the grid cells to investigate the spatial relationship between the changes of land-cover classes and population density change, and then calculated the correlation coefficients of land-cover categories and population density changes for 3 intervals between 1972 and 2011 (1972–1987, 1987–2001, and 2001–2011). The results showed that the urban/built-up density decreased in the metropolitan inner core as the city center experienced depopulation. Spatial correlation analysis showed a strong positive correlation between urban expansion and population density change (r=0.59), and that urban expansion was strongly negatively correlated with cropland change (r=−0.77). The results also demonstrated that grid cells allow remote sensing and statistics data to be combined, improving the knowledge, understanding, and analysis of urban dynamics.

Since the first modern census was conducted in Serbia in 1866, 20 censuses have been conducted to date. However, controversy regarding the field research, structure of questions and use of data has ...never been stronger. The sociopolitical context, in other European countries alike, that preceded the 2022 census was marked by low-key invitations from government representatives to participate in the Census, an inconspicuous campaign by the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia, conspiracy theories on disseminated social networks and calls for a boycott. On the other hand, despite methodological improvements, the census was marked by implementation problems, untrained enumerators, lack of manpower in the field, and the imputation from administrative sources of persons who did not participate in the Census. It seems that this time some of major causes of field research problems and, once again, methodological incompatibilities with previous censuses, were the inadequate communication with the public and insufficient training levels of enumerators.
Among the global problems in the world, one of the important topics is the demographic situation. Basic and accurate parameters of the demographic situation are collected during the census, that is ...why the general population census is an event of national importance. Like the rest of the world, population censuses in Georgia have a centuries-old history. The frequency and main characteristics of the censuses were conducted at different times with different purposes and interests. It is based on the methodology developed by the United Nations and is conducted in accordance with unified, standard and normative indicators. The introduction of a whole series of innovations is designed for sustainable development in accordance with the task of the 2030 agenda. The use of census data shows us that the role and importance of censuses in the modern global world has grown even more. The "Recommendations of the Conference of European Statisticians for the 2020 Round of the Population and Housing Census", which was prepared by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) for the 2015 round, is particularly noteworthy. The recommendations addressed such important aspects of the population census as data privacy and security, legislation, definitions of terms, phases of the census, publication and dissemination of results, quality assurance and quality management, and technologies used in the census process. Along with the given recommendations, the document focuses on the list of data that countries should receive in the 2020 round of population and housing census, namely: population, its geographical, demographic and economic characteristics; Agriculture, education, migration, ethno-cultural characteristics, disabilities, household and family characteristics and housing characteristics. The census of 2024 will provide us with important and versatile information, which is necessary to assess the demographic situation in the country, to clearly see the existing problems and challenges. The new population census methodology developed by the United Nations and, accordingly, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFDA) includes a number of innovations in the census questionnaire, which deals with immigration status, disabilities, type of marriage and marriage registration. The introduction of innovations is designed for sustainable development in accordance with the task of the 2030 agenda.
The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) is, with INEGI in Mexico are the only ones in the world to claim the "geography". But is it a scientific guarantee for researchers who ...implement local census data? The large number of territorial categories of official statistics of present-day Brazil reveals a great wealth of data, provided they are not considered as a "turnkey" material for research.From a pre-statistical European model inherited from the colonial period to the rationality of the state, then to the liberal and post-modern context that spread in the globalized world, the IBGE categories reveal the paradoxes due to the superposition of different points of view on how to characterize the urban space. This translates into difficulties in understanding and using aggregated population data on official spatial and urban categories. The avatars of the current situation are symptomatic of the paradigm of complexity that increasingly influences the quantitative approach in the social sciences and more generally reflects a break between citizens, policies and the logic of experts. Based on an in-depth analysis of territorial categories produced by the IBGE, the article uses these sources to understand the criteria that prevail in the divisions of space and in the definition of the urban space by the institution in order to assess the interest and limitations of using these sources of information. This analysis should allow a better understanding and better use of the rich dataset spread by the national statistical services.

Timely and accurate measurement of urban sprawl is indispensable for assessing its environmental and societal impacts. However, few studies have examined urban sprawl in cities across China. In this study, we quantified urban sprawl in different cities across China from 1990 to 2010 by combining the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program's Operational Linescan System (DMSP/OLS) nighttime light images and national census data. We found that the annual growth rate of urban areas was 2.45% greater than that of the urban population in China from 1990 to 2010, indicating an overall trend of urban sprawl. Small and medium cities in west China had the highest level of sprawl over time. We conclude that much more attention should be given to the prevention of excessive urban expansion in small and medium cities in west China.
Although the necessity for hamlet-scale demographic analysis has been repeatedly pointed out, there has been little research due to scarcity of data. The purpose of this paper is twofold: (1) to ...explore the feasibility of hamlet-scale demographic analysis using the population census and (2) to examine the merger of hamlets from a demographic perspective using a cohort analysis. Thus, we chose the merger of three hamlets in the Fudo district of Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture, in 2020. The results follow. (1) The population of hamlets after 1965 could be ascertained from censuses by interpreting census enumeration districts as hamlets, but it was not possible to similarly use censuses after 2000. (2) Fudo Elementary School became independent and expanded in the 1950s because of the large population of the cohort born during 1946-1955, i.e. the “independent-school generation.” In the post-2000 era, as a response to the declining birth rates and subsequent closure of elementary schools, there has been a call for this generation to forge a new bond. (3) The population of people aged in their 60s and 70s who serve as district officers peaked in 2015 and has been declining since. In summary, this hamlet merger was conducted by the “independent-school generation” who were old enough to be designated as district officers and had prepared for a future population decline. Future tasks are to examine the life of each of the “independent-school generation” and to improve hamlet-scale demographic analysis considering gender and social mobility trends.
This study analysed Ghana’s demographic patterns as shown by the 2000, 2010, and 2021 censuses and considered how these trends may affect Christian missions. According to the analysis, Ghana’s Muslim ...population has been steadily increasing over time, and by the year 2096, it may have a Muslim majority. Christian mission organisations working in Ghana must reevaluate their methods and approaches in order to effectively interact with and minister to a shifting religious landscape as a result of this probable demographic upheaval. The study also investigated the probable effects of a Muslim majority in Ghana and discussed the consequences for Christian missionary work, emphasising the need for cultural sensitivity, interfaith communication, and contextualised approaches to engage with the diverse religious beliefs and practices of Ghanaians. This study further examined what this demographic trend suggests and its implication for evangelism and intentional Christlike disciple making if a reversal is to be envisaged. The thesis statement of the paper is that Islam in Ghana unlike Christianity is witnessing steady growth, and the Church is enjoined by her calling to make Christlike disciples for her future survival. This article belongs to the field of missiology. It employed a transdisciplinary approach that incorporated statistical hermeneutics, hermeneutics of comparative theology, history of religion and demography to interpret quantitative results and determine their place and meaning in the religious landscape and their implications for Christian Mission. This innovation with an online census approach is undoubtedly inseparable from social problems or constraints. Social, economic, and geographic factors affect the literacy of information and communication technology in society. The factual conditions in the field encouraged the team community service to take a strategic role by carrying out community service activities in Kecamaran Pabelan, Semarang Regency, in the form of online population census 2020 assistance activities. Mentoring methods are carried out by providing counseling, socialization, and technical guidance to the Public. The results achieved from this assistance to partners were an increase in the community response rate in Semarang Regency, more partners could participate and it was easier to fill data in the online population census 2020.

mobilização de experts. Conclui-se pensando o censo como
infraestrutura informacional que inscreve, imagina e estabiliza ideais
de futuridade via números.
This article explores the
techno-political controversies related to the implementation of the
2020 census in Brazil. Through interviews and documentary research, I
have mapped the techno-moral debates and the socio-technical
transformations of two of its devices: the questionnaire and the
budget. This approach allowed to highlight the emergence of a form of
activism carried by the mobilization of experts. The text concludes by
interpreting the census as an informational infrastructure that
inscribes, imagines and stabilizes ideals for the future through
numbers.
The main characteristic of the population changes in Serbia since the beginning of the 21st century is increasingly pronounced depopulation. The difference in the number of births and deaths is ...continuously increasing to the detriment of births, and emigration traditionally exceeds immigration during the entire analyzed period 2002-2022. The problem in the analysis of population dynamics in Serbia is the lack of methodological consistency in the results of population censuses, so the main goal of this paper is the methodological harmonization of census data to see as realistically as possible the population changes in the period of the last three censuses in 2002, 2011 and 2022. Overall, the depopulation in Serbia is by about 135,000 higher in the period 2002-2022, if we correct the officially published data, while the importance of the negative net migration in the total population changes has increased to over 20%. Population decline is present in as many as 95% of the settlements in Serbia.
