We characterize heterogeneity in preferences and motivations regarding plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs)—including plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and electric vehicles (EVs). Using survey data collected from ...1754 new vehicle buying households in Canada in 2013, we segment respondents using two approaches that prove to be complementary. Preference-based segments were constructed using latent-class analysis of discrete choice experiment data. Potential PEV buyers were split into a “PEV-enthusiast” segment (8% of the sample) with extremely high valuation of PEVs and a broader “PHEV-oriented” segment (25%) that expressed moderately positive valuation of PHEVs. Preference-based segments also varied by respondents' valuation of specific attributes such as fuel savings. Our second approach constructed lifestyle-based segments using cluster analysis on a subset of potential early PEV buyers (33% of the total sample). The six lifestyle-based clusters varied in engagement in environment- and technology-oriented lifestyles, environmental concern and openness to change. Overall preferences were fairly similar across the clusters, though apparent motivations varied substantially by cluster as indicated by their differing engagement in lifestyles and environmental concern. Taken together, both approaches suggest that PHEVs are the most likely PEV to have broad market appeal and that car buyers have high degrees of heterogeneity in both preferences and motivations.
•We characterize heterogeneity among potential plug-in vehicle buyers in two ways.•Preference-based segments differ in PEV interest and willingness-to-pay.•Lifestyle-based segments differ in motivations for PEV interest.•Plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) are the most popular PEV type across segments.•Policy and research ought to address heterogeneity in preferences and motivations.
Natural disasters constitute a persistent threat to economic welfare in many places, particularly in developing countries. Not only can disasters transform living circumstances, but we provide ...evidence here that they can lead to important changes in individual preferences. In a series of experiments that we conducted in rural Thailand, we find that the 2004 tsunami led to substantial long-lasting increases in risk aversion, prosocial behavior, and impatience. We use GIS data and survey responses to identify disaster impact, showing that both community-level and individual-level experiences appear to affect preferences in theoretically plausible ways. Our findings have important implications for public policy efforts to address natural disasters.
The opportunity Value of Travel Time (VTT) is one of the most important elements of the total cost of recreation day-trips and arguably the most difficult to estimate. Most studies build upon the ...theoretical framework proposed by Becker (1965) by using a combination of revealed and stated preference data to estimate a value of time which is uniform in all activities and under all circumstances. This restriction is relaxed by DeSerpa's (1971) model which allows the value of saving time to be activity-specific. We present the first analysis which uses actual driving choices between open access and toll roads to estimate a VTT specific for recreation trips, thereby providing a value which conforms to both Becker's and DeSerpa's theoretical models. Using these findings we conduct a Monte Carlo simulation to identify generalizable results for subsequent valuation studies. Our results indicate that 3/4 of the wage rate provides a reasonable approximation of the average VTT for recreation trips, while the commonly implemented assumption of 1/3 of the wage rate generates downward biased results.
We propose a data mining approach to predict human wine taste preferences that is based on easily available analytical tests at the certification step. A large dataset (when compared to other studies ...in this domain) is considered, with white and red
vinho verde samples (from Portugal). Three regression techniques were applied, under a computationally efficient procedure that performs simultaneous variable and model selection. The support vector machine achieved promising results, outperforming the multiple regression and neural network methods. Such model is useful to support the oenologist wine tasting evaluations and improve wine production. Furthermore, similar techniques can help in target marketing by modeling consumer tastes from niche markets.
•Changes in time preferences induced by tsunami in the Great East Japan Earthquake.•Study uses panel survey data before and after the earthquake.•Employs the (β, δ) model to capture individuals’ time ...preferences.•Increased present bias (smaller β) and insignificant change in time discount factor (δ).•This change persists even five years after the earthquake.
This study examines whether individuals’ time preferences are affected by the damage caused by the tsunami resulting from the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011 using panel surveys before and after the earthquake. When the change in time preferences is measured using the (β, δ) model, present bias tendency increases (shrinking β), although there is no statistically significant change in the time discount factor (δ) for those affected by the tsunami. The hyperbolic discounting dummy also shows an increase in time inconsistency. This change persists even five years after the earthquake.

The purpose of this study is to explore emerging markets for imported beef in China by assessing Beijing consumer demand for quality attributes. This study utilizes data from an in-store choice ...experiment to evaluate consumer willingness-to-pay for select food quality attributes (food safety, animal welfare, Green Food and Organic certification) taking into account country-of-origin information. Our results show that Beijing consumers value food safety information the most, and are willing to pay more for Australian beef products than for US or domestic (Chinese) beef. We explore the various relationships between the quality attributes, find evidence of preference heterogeneity and discuss agribusiness and marketing implications of our findings.
•Chinese consumers have high demand for food safety assurance in beef products.•Consumers are willing to pay more for Australian beef products than for US or domestic beef.•Consumers prefer Green Food to Organic certification.•Consumers are currently not willing to pay a high premium for animal welfare information.
