This is an exciting time to study in Athens. The “rescue" excavations of recent years, conducted during construction of the Metro system and in preparation for the 2004 Olympics Games, combined with ...major restoration projects and a new enthusiasm for fresh examination of old material, using new techniques and applications, brings new perspectives and answers on many aspects of the ancient city of Athens and life, politics and religion in Attica. The 15 papers presented here contribute new findings that result from intensive, firsthand examinations of the archaeological and epigraphical evidence. They illustrate how much may be gained by reexamining material from older excavations, and from the methodological shift from documenting information to closer analysis and larger historical reflection. They offer a variety of perspectives on a range of issues: the ambiance of the ancient city for passersby, filled with roadside shrines; techniques of architectural construction and sculpting; religious expression in Athens including cults of Asklepios and Serapis; the precise procedures for Greek sacrifice; how the borders of Attica were defined over time, and details of its road-system. In presenting this volume the contributors are continuing in a long tradition of autopsy – in the sense of 'personal observation' – in Athens, that began even in the Hellenistic period and has continued through the writings of centuries of travelers and academics to the present day.
Die durch große Infrastrukturprojekte bedingten Präventivgrabungen sind oft ein Ort, an dem neue Arbeitsmetoden eingesetzt werden. Bei dem vom INRAP seit 2008 durchgeführten Projekt Seine-Nord Europe ...wurden mehrere wissenschaftliche Methoden, insbesondere die Geophysik, angewandt, um bestimmte archäologische Fragestellungen zu beantworten. Die Haupteigenschaft dieses 2500 ha umfassenden Projektes besteht darin, die Geophysik in der Ausgrabungsphase und nicht in der Diagnosephase mit einzubeziehen wie dies bei anderen Projekten der Fall war. Die Ergebnisse waren besonders bedeutend, da die Geophysik nur in Fällen von klar definierten archäologischen Fragestellungen angewandt wurde. Im Endeffekt wurden zwischen 2009 und 2013 einunddreißig Studien durchgeführt.
Drei Ansätze sind zu unterscheiden : Der erste betrifft die Prospektion der Fundstellen außerhalb des Ausgrabungsareals, um die Ausdehnung der archäologischen Reste zu bestimmen. Die Ergänzung der Grabungsdaten durch die geophysikalische Kartographie liefert einen Überblick der archäologischen Stätte und ermöglicht eine einwandfreie Bestimmung der Strukturen. Der zweite Ansatz betrifft die Integration einer archäologischen Stätte in ihren geomorphologischen Kontext und erfordert die Ausweitung der Untersuchung auf wesentlich größere Flächen. Er wurde insbesondere im Tal der Oise für die Charakterisierung der Ablagerungsmorphologie im Zusammenhang mit den vor-und frühgeschichtlichen Siedlungen angewandt. Der dritte und letzte Ansatz ist neuartiger, da es darum ging, neue Denkanstöße für die Phase nach dem Abtragen der oberen Fundhorizonte einzubringen. So konnten anthropogene Phänomene herausgestellt werden, die mit dem bloßen Auge oft schwer oder gar unmöglich zu erkennen sind. Für jeden dieser Ansätze werden die Beiträge und deren Durchsetzungsbedingungen im Rahmen des Projektes Seine-Nord Europe diskutiert. Diese Synthese zeigt die Vielfalt der möglichen Anwendungen der Geophysik bei klar definierten archäologischen Fragestellungen und in einem bekannten archäologischen und pedologischen Umfeld. Die Geophysik hat in diesem Fall ihren Platz in der Palette der Hilfsmittel des Archäologen.
Preventive archaeological excavations in the context of large-scale engineering works are often an opportunity to implement new working practices. Since 2008, the Europe-Seine-Nord Canal Project undertaken by the INRAP entailed the development of a number of scientific procedures, and notably the use of a geophysical approach to certain archaeological problems. The main specificity of this project, covering 2500 hectares, is to have included the geophysics at the excavation stage, and not merely at the evaluation stage as was previously the case on other projects. The scientific results were specially important as the geophysics was used on a rational basis and only when the archaeological problems had been clearly posed. Thus over the period 2009 to 2013, 31 surveys were successfully carried out. Three main approaches can be distinguished. The first one concerns the prospection of those parts of the site beyond the line of the projected route, in order to delimit the extension of the archaeological remains. The supplementary information contributed by geophysical cartography together with the excavation data provides a pertinent overall view of the site, and a clear characterization of its structures. The second approach aims mainly to situate the archaeological site in its geomorphological context. This approach requires a survey covering much wider areas. It has been notably used in the Oise valley in order to determine the morpho-sedimentary systems linked with the preand proto-historic settlements. Finally, the third and last approach is meant to be more original in that it aims to bring fresh thinking after the stripping and observation of the surface levels. Thus, certain man-made phenomena, often difficult, if not impossible, to recognize with the naked eye, may be distinguished. For each of these approaches, we shall discuss the benefits and the conditions of implementation in the Seine-Nord-Europe Canal Project. This summary shows how many different applications geophysics can offer when the archaeological questions have been clearly defined and when the archaeological and pedological context is already known. In this way, geophysics takes its rightful place in the range of tools at the archaeologist’s disposal.
Les opérations d’archéologie préventive liées aux grands travaux sont souvent un lieu de mise en place de nouvelles méthodes de travail. Le projet canal Seine-Nord Europe mené par l’Inrap depuis 2008 a permis de développer plusieurs démarches scientifiques et notamment l’utilisation de la géophysique pour répondre à certaines problématiques archéologiques. La principale particularité de ce projet de 2500 ha est d’avoir intégré la géophysique lors de la phase de fouille et non lors de la phase de diagnostic comme cela a pu être le cas sur d’autres projets. Les apports scientifiques ont été particulièrement importants puisque la géophysique a été employée de manière raisonnée uniquement lorsque les problématiques archéologiques étaient clairement posées. Au final, ce sont 31 études réparties entre 2009 et 2013 qui ont pu être réalisées.
Trois grandes approches peuvent être distinguées. La première concerne la prospection des sites hors emprise afin de déterminer l’extension des vestiges archéologiques. Le complément des données de fouilles par la cartographie géophysique permet alors d’obtenir une vision d’ensemble pertinente du site archéologique associée à une bonne caractérisation des structures. La seconde approche est plus orientée vers l’intégration d’un site archéologique dans son contexte géomorphologique. Cette démarche nécessite d’étendre l’étude à des surfaces beaucoup plus grandes. Elle a notamment été utilisée sur la vallée de l’Oise pour la détermination des systèmes morpho-sédimentaires liés aux occupations pré-et protohistoriques. Enfin, la troisième et dernière approche se veut plus originale puisqu’il était question d’apporter des éléments de réflexion après décapage des horizons superficiels. Elle permet de mettre en avant des phénomènes anthropiques souvent difficiles, voire impossibles à distinguer à l’oeil nu. Pour chacune de ces approches, les apports et leurs conditions de mise en place au sein du projet canal Seine-Nord Europe seront discutés. Cette synthèse montre la diversité des applications que peut offrir la géophysique lorsque des problématiques archéologiques sont clairement définies et que le cadre archéologique et pédologique est connu préalablement. La géophysique trouve alors toute sa place dans la palette d’outils à disposition de l’archéologue.
The archaeological research performed on Highway A-92 constitutes a case study concerning the foundations of European archaeological environmentalism. According to European environmental law, ...archaeological impact prevention is meant to avoid in origin, which implies the planning of construction projects. However, European Preventive Archaeology dodges this key environmental principle, inhibiting itself in the planning of projects. Instead of averting impact, its preventive refers equivocally to the contrary -that is, forecasting the impact and the consequent development of voluminous excavation seasons. The archaeology of A-92 Baza-Puerto Lumbreras brought about a substantive application of environmental regulations, highlighting this original vice of archaeological conservation whose adverse effects are currently the topic of international debate. In the case of Spain, Preventive Archaeology is nominal and draws upon Salvage Archaeology
from archaeological emergency management. It is supplied by field archaeography, whose surveying underestimates the archaeological impact prediction, and, rather than environmental mitigation measures, its excavations continue to be mere deficient formalities.
La legislación ambiental europea prescribe que la prevención del impacto arqueológico es la evitación en su origen, que es el planeamiento de los proyectos de construcción. Sin embargo, la Arqueología Preventiva europea soslaya esta máxima ambientalista inhibiéndose en el planeamiento de los proyectos. Antes que evitar el impacto, su preventiva refiere equívocamente lo contrario, esto es, la previsión del mismo para su corrección con voluminosas campañas de excavaciones.
La arqueología de esta Autovía realizó una aplicación sustantiva de la normativa ambiental, poniendo de relieve este vicio de origen, cuyos efectos negativos son hoy día tema de debate internacional. En España la Arqueología Preventiva es nominal y arrastra la Arqueología de Salvamento de la administración arqueológica de urgencias. Es una arqueografía de campo cuya prospectiva subestima la previsión de impacto arqueológico y antes que correcciones ambientalistas, sus excavacionescontinúan siendo meros trámites correctivos
The environmentalist archaeology applied to the construction of this section of Highway A-92 was a research project into the disciplinary foundations of archaeological conservation. It reveals that ...the high rates of environmental impact in archaeology are induced by inadequate planning, faced with the inhibition of interadministrative management that implies the common undervaluation of cultural heritage. This oversizes the environmental impact, problematizing the construction and saturating the archaeological conservation project itself. Thus it has no capacity to execute the environmental mitigation, which remains pending after the excavations. This original vice and its malpractice, characteristic of European Preventive Archaeology under way, becomes acute in Spanish archaeological emergency management, where the absence of administrative forecasting and of disciplinary updating leads to the outdated underproduction of Salvage Archaeology. The archaeology of this highway is disruptive with all this pre-environmentalist tradition of archaeological conservation
La arqueología ambientalista aplicada a la construcción de este tramo de la Autovía A-92 fue un proyecto de investigación en los fundamentos disciplinarios de la conservación arqueológica. Pone de manifiesto que las elevadas tasas de impacto ambiental en arqueología son inducidas por un déficit de planeamiento, ante la inhibición de la gestión interadministrativa que colige la ordinaria infravaloración del Patrimonio Histórico. Ello sobredimensiona el impacto ambiental, problematizando la construcción y saturando el propio proyecto de conservación arqueológica. Pues no tiene capacidad para ejecutar la corrección ambiental, que queda suspendida tras las excavaciones. Estos vicios de origen y sus malas prácticas ambientalistas, propios de la Arqueología Preventiva europea en curso, se agudizan en la Arqueología de Urgencias española, donde la ausencia de previsión administrativa y de actualización disciplinaria conducen a la anacrónica subproducción de la Arqueología de Salvamento. La arqueología de esta Autovía es disruptiva con toda esta tradición preambientalista de la conservación arqueológica.
Von 2005 bis 2007 wurde eine Reihe von medienwirksamen Aktionen durchgeführt : Ausstellungen, 3D Modelle, Modelle, experimentelle Archäologie, Grabungsbesichtigungen, um einen Dialog zwischen den ...Archäologen, den Mandatsträgern und den Bewohnern der ville nouvelle herzustellen. Dieser Dialog hat zu einer dauerhaften, bescheidenen doch symbolischen Realisierung geführt : der Schaffung eines multimedial-interaktiven Terminals mit einem Modell im Herzen des neuen Stadtzentrums, an der Stelle des Fundplatzes Serris " les Ruelles".
De 2005 à 2007 une série d’action de médiation : expositions, modélisation 3D, maquettes, archéologie expérimentale, visites de chantiers, a permis d’établir un dialogue entre les archéologues, les élus et les habitants de la ville nouvelle, aboutissant à une réalisation pérenne, modeste mais symbolique : la création d’une borne interactive avec maquette au coeur du nouveau centre urbain construit à l’emplacement du site de Serris " Les Ruelles".
From 2005 to 2007, a series of communications projects (exhibitions, 3 D modelling, experimental archaeology, guided tours on excavation sites) initiated a dialogue between archaeologists, local representatives and the residents of the New Town ; the permanent result of this collaboration is modest but symbolic : the setting up of an interactive screen together with a scale model in the very heart of the New Town on the site of the Merovingian village of Serris " les Ruelles".
Dieser Beitrag ist ein Auszug aus einem Grabungsbericht. Er listet die jungpaläolithischen und mesolithischen Fundplätze auf, die im Rahmen der Präventivarchäologie im Vorfeld der linearen Projekte ...in der Picardie ergraben wurden. Im ersten Teil liegt der Akzent auf den unterschiedlichen Kontexten und Methoden, die deren Entdeckung ermöglicht hatten. Angesichts der kleinen Anzahl von Fundplätzen wird im zweiten Teil ein idealer Forschungsansatz für die Zukunft zur Diskussion gestellt. Für die an den hier wenig berücksichtigten wissenschaftlicheren Aspekten interessierten Leser wird eine nahezu erschöpfende Bibliographie vorgeschlagen.
Cette contribution, extraite d’un rapport, est un recensement des sites du Paléolithique supérieur et du Mésolithique qui ont été explorés par l’archéologie préventive sur les projets de tracés linéaires en Picardie. L’accent est d’abord porté sur les divers contextes et les méthodologies qui ont permis leur découverte. Devant le faible nombre de gisements, une proposition d’approche idéale pour le futur est détaillée dans une seconde partie. Une liste bibliographique quasiment exhaustive est proposée afin que les lecteurs intéressés par les aspects plus scientifiques, peu traités ici, puissent s’y reporter.
This article, an extract from a report, is an inventory of the Upper Palaeolithic and Mesolithic sites studied by preventive archaeology along the projected linear development works in Picardy. The focus will be firstly on the various contexts and methodologies which enabled their discovery. Secondly, because of the small number of sites, a detailed proposition for an ideal approach in the future will be put forward. A practically exhaustive bibliography has been drawn up, for the use of readers interested in the more precisely scientific aspects with which this article is not mainly concerned.
Located in the Moselle valley in Luxembourg, the Wintrange basin has been the subject of systematic geoarchaeological investigations for the last fifteen years. According to observations made ...upstream, the study area could represent a system of lower terraces build up of two stepped alluvial formations (M2 +10m, M1 +3-5m). A recent synthesis of paleoenvironmental studies done on the M1 formation has produced a chronological frame-work (radiocarbon and IRSL dating) and permits to precise the stages of morphosedimentary and environmental evolution for this part of the basin since the end of the Weichselian. This preliminary synthesis presents the sedimentary units of the lower terraces M1, the present state of knowledge on the dynamic and the chronology for the deposits, as well as an assessment for the human occupation and its impact on the landscape. The work study shows that there is an important hiatus for the Lateglacial and the beginning of the Holocene for this part of the Moselle valley.

This paper reports the main activities planned within the context of the ArchaeoTrack research project. The project aims at creating a new ground-penetrating radar (GPR)-based methodology producing ...information for use of communities and local administrations within a preventive archaeology perspective. To this aim, the project provides i) identification of the most suitable GPR system for archaeological prospections, ii) development of a virtual "buried" museum and iii) data storage and visualisation in a freeware dissemination digital platform. An overview of GPR applications in archaeology is reported, followed by a description of the main structure of the project and the expected results.
