This research intends to perform a situation analysis of the Spanish publishing sector to see to what extent private publishing companies adequately interpret market signals and adapt to them. The ...study raises several questions for the Spanish publishing market: first, how is the price elasticity of the sale of copies?; second, what impact does the greater or lesser number of private publishers have on the sale of copies?; third, how does the sale of copies condition the evolution of the average print run?; and fourth, what impact does reading habit have on issue sales? The analysis carried out concludes: firstly, that the sale of copies is a price-elastic function to the price of books; second, that the greater the number of publishing agents, the higher the level of book sales; thirdly, those publishing companies adapt the average print runs per title in a period based on the copies sold on the market in the previous period and, finally, fourthly, the existence of a positive and direct relationship between the copy sales and the number of regular readers. Spanish publishers face digital transformation -and changes in their respective business models-, without losing sight of the variables studied that act as driving forces for their behavior and design their strategy in the market.

A printing and non-printingsurface structure of the offset printing forms are key factors in maintaining the conventional offset printing. The main characteristics of the surface are: physical and ...chemical structure, surface tension and surface roughness. Surface topography is one of the critical factors which could cause the instability in the quality performance and the durability of the printing forms. During the printing process these characteristics change and directly influence the print. Performed investigations are based on the fact that the changes in physical-chemical properties of the non-printing areas as well as the changes in the surface micro structure of the printing forms directly influence the quality of the reproduction. In this paper, the behaviour of non-printing elements of a thermal CTP plate developed in a fresh developer and used for a print run of 123.000, 177.000 and 300.000 copies on a web offset heat-set printing press has been investigated. Investigation made in a paper showed that high depth of focus SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) can provide detailed topographical information about the surface, but cannot provide quantitative topographical information. Due to this fact, the printing forms have been also ob-served and analysed before and after the print run by a mechanical stylus profilometer. The investigations reveal the appearance of the physical changes as well as the geometrical ones. As a result of these changes, the influence of a fountain solution on the printing form may also vary, as well as the balance between the ink and the fountain solution during the printing process.
Who were watching films in China from 1949 to the Cultural Revolution? Research on this question has been patchy and frustrated by the kinds of sources available. Box office statistics, viewers' ...polls and commentaries, and even fandom were open to manipulation to put a positive spin on the growth of audiences and the appropriate popularity of particular films. This article uses a provincial film distribution list of all Chinese and foreign films distributed nationwide in these years to tease out indirect indications of the nature of film audiences. The number of prints struck in 35-mm and 16-mm formats, the language used (in the case of foreign films) and the timing of release all indicate the importance of a differentiation of audiences. Not all film-goers were expected to watch all films: particular titles suited particular viewers. Comparisons are made with a useful profile of the readership of literature in these years.
In Russia, the use of the printing press began in the middle of the 16th century. Book
printing in Moscow was interrupted during the Time of Troubles and restored in
1614/1615. In the 17th century, ...the process developed technically and culturally. Book printing Prikaz was established to manage the Printing House. This paper tries to summarize activities of MPH (Moscow Print House) in the period of 1615–1700 on the basis of the continuous study of documents from the Prikaz’s Archive: the character of the repertoire (analysis covers 632 titles according to Archive instead of the 469 that physically survived and was listed in the A. S. Zernova’ catalogue (№ 30–498)) and its change depending on the internal and external priorities of the state.
In this study for the first time there were specified exactly the number of copies in a run, production cost and decreed selling price.Using documents from the Archive and notes written in the books the social and geographical aspects of the proliferation of tens of thousand of new published books were established; these has allowed to prove that in the late 1730s a printed book already had become a real factor in the development of majority of Russian regions, and that be the middle of the century, a common Slavic book market has been formed.
This paper discusses the transformations in the Slavic and East European book trade in the 1990s. Among the challenges these changes pose to Slavic librarians are a profusion of new vendors, very ...small print runs, and a general breakdown in bibliographic control throughout the region. It argues that vigilant and timely selection is critical in order to obtain materials before they go out of print. Cultivating direct relationships with vendors both in North America and in the region is also required in order to continue to build Slavic collections successfully. It also considers the performance of English language approval plan vendors, electronic vs. print, and the ominous implications that the trend toward mergers and economies of scale hold for library collections.
