One-step fabrication method for thin films and shells is developed with nature-derived eggshell membrane hydrolysates (ESMHs) and coffee melanoidins (CMs) that have been discarded as food waste. The ...nature-derived polymeric materials, ESMHs and CMs, prove highly biocompatible with living cells, and the one-step method enables cytocompatible construction of cell-in-shell nanobiohybrid structures. Nanometric ESMH-CM shells are formed on individual probiotic Lactobacillus acidophilus, without any noticeable decrease in viability, and the ESMH-CM shells effectively protected L. acidophilus in the simulated gastric fluid (SGF). The cytoprotection power is further enhanced by Fesup.3+-mediated shell augmentation. For example, after 2 h of incubation in SGF, the viability of native L. acidophilus is 30%, whereas nanoencapsulated L. acidophilus, armed with the Fesup.3+-fortified ESMH-CM shells, show 79% in viability. The simple, time-efficient, and easy-to-process method developed in this work would contribute to many technological developments, including microbial biotherapeutics, as well as waste upcycling.

The focus on the gut microbiome is driving many health initiatives today, as it plays a critical role in maintaining overall body health. As a result, the use of microbiotic products is rapidly ...increasing, and Turkey is an important market in this area. To understand the dynamics of this market, its growth potential, and future predictions, a case study was conducted based on an interview with industry expert Haydar Yılmaz.During the interview, topics such as the history and current state of the industry, growth potential, market trends, consumer behaviour, regulations, and competition were discussed. In addition, detailed information was gathered on the product ranges, production processes, and R&D activities of companies operating in the sector. This information provided an important resource for understanding the industry's current state and identifying future growth opportunities. In the study, the data obtained were analyzed using the narrative analysis method.The microbiome and probiotic market in Turkey has high growth potential, creating opportunities for companies in the future. Investing in R&D and innovation is crucial for the sector's development and utilizing the microbiome in marketing strategies can be advantageous. Ultimately, this sector can have positive effects on human health.

The goal is to clarify that the microbiome in the maternal fetal and during pediatric age, as well as the immediate changes that occur as new microbes are acquired postnatally play major roles in subsequent health and disease. Rapidly developing technologies for multi-omic analyses and systems biology are shifting paradigms in both scientific knowledge and clinical care.
Finally, the idea will be to provide health professionals with comprehensive, understandable and highly readable updated information on the intestinal microbiota, probiotics and prebiotics.
IntroductionEnteral probiotics have been shown to reduce the incidence of severe necrotising enterocolitis (NEC) and mortality in premature infants under 1500g.1 A 2014 Cochrane review strongly ...suggested a change in practice and recommended comparative studies of preparations, timing and treatment length.Incidence of NEC was substantially reduced in a prospective cohort study in a North American NICU after introduction of probiotics 2. We were interested to assess the impact on NEC, sepsis and death after probiotics had been introduced in several units in the southwest of England.MethodsWe administered a probiotic containing Bifidobactum and Lactobacillus, to all patients less than 32 weeks or under 1500g since July 2013. Using Badgernet (a database for all admitted babies in the United Kingdom) we looked at incidence of NEC, sepsis, death and length of stay, before the introduction of probiotics in 2011 and compared this with the incidence after the introduction in 2014. NEC was defined as any baby having confirmed or suspected NEC as a diagnosis on Badgernet and was applied only to inborn babies.We then compared the data of the 3 units that had introduced probiotics, with data from 3 similar units in the network, that hadn’t.ResultsIn the units using probiotics, suspected or confirmed cases of NEC were reduced from 25/169 admissions (15%) to 18/174 admissions (10%). Cases of NEC or death were reduced from 34/169 (20%) to 23/174 (13%). Average length of stay was unchanged at 38 days.In those units that hadn’t started probiotics, suspected or confirmed NEC slightly increased in 2014. The odds ratio (odds of NEC on probiotics/ odds of NEC not on probiotics) = 0.64. This suggests a reduction in risk from using probiotics, however, the confidence limits are wide (95% CLs are 0.34, 1.16) and thus this is not statistically significant.ConclusionThere would appear to be a trend towards reduction of NEC in units since the introduction of probiotics however this is not statistically significant. We recognise the results are limited by the data being input. As probiotics are introduced into more units, prospective data collection is needed in order to look for a significant reduction in individual units.

The sample that was stored at 4°C vs outdoor ambient temperature contained similar quantities of identical microbes. Of the 26 probiotic foods tested, only 5 contained Bifidobacterium in sufficient concentration for exhibiting a therapeutic effect, while 3 out of these 5 presented with a relative abundance levels at ∼20%. If such supplements are to be used for preventing disorders, correct content and labeling are needed, with quality control testing being an essential requirement Alternatively, other methods such as prebiotics and nutraceuticals that increase levels of beneficial bacteria may prove a more practical avenue to restore gut dysbiosis if probiotics are not trusted.
