Abstract The American College of Cardiology third decennial Professional Life Survey was completed by 2,313 cardiologists: 964 women (42%) and 1,349 men (58%). Compared with 10 and 20 years ago, ...current results reflect a substantially lower response rate (21% vs. 31% and 49%, respectively) and an aging workforce that is less likely to be in private practice. Women continue to be more likely to practice in academic centers, be pediatric cardiologists, and have a noninvasive subspecialty. Men were more likely to indicate that family responsibilities negatively influenced their careers than previously, whereas women remained less likely to marry or have children. Men and women reported similar, high levels of career satisfaction, with women reporting higher satisfaction currently. However, two-thirds of women continue to experience discrimination, nearly 3 times the rate in men. Personal life choices continue to differ substantially for men and women in cardiology, although differences have diminished.
I have been a nurse for 49 years, a person living with epilepsy for 35 years, and in recovery from depression for 16 years. I wish to reflect on my professional life lived alongside my illnesses. ...Everyone has the right to learn from their errors. As someone with epilepsy, I have made many mistakes. However, I have managed to develop the strength of “independently controlling my seizures.” I aim to compile my insights on illnesses, disabilities, and other necessary considerations, to experiment with them, and to discover their potential.
Abstract
OBJECTIVES
The European Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery designed a questionnaire to assess the impact of gender bias on a cardiothoracic ...surgery career.
METHODS
A 46-item survey investigating gender bias was designed using online survey software from December 2020 to January 2021. All European Society of Thoracic Surgeons and European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery members and non-members included in the mailing lists were invited to complete an electronic survey. Descriptive statistics and a comparison between gender groups were performed.
RESULTS
Our overall response rate was 11.5% (1118/9764), of which 36.14% were women and 63.69% were men. Women were more likely to be younger than men (P < 0.0001). A total of 66% of the women reported having no children compared to only 19% of the men (P < 0.0001). Only 6% of women vs 22% of men were professors. More women (72%) also reported never having been a formal mentor themselves compared to men (38%, P < 0.0001). A total of 35% of female respondents considered leaving surgery because of episodes of discrimination compared to 13% of men; 67% of women said that they experienced being unfairly treated due to gender discrimination. Of the male surgeons, 31% reported that they were very satisfied with their career compared to only 17% of women (P < 0.0001).
CONCLUSIONS
Women in cardiothoracic surgery reported significantly high rates of experiences with bias that may prevent qualified women from advancing to positions of leadership. Efforts to mitigate bias and support the professional development of women are at the centre of newly formed European committees.
Despite the increasing proportion of women applying to European medical schools, relatively few women are in leadership positions, and several recent publications have highlighted many factors that could contribute to gender inequality in cardiothoracic surgery 1, 2.
This paper examines the role of resilience in teacher effectiveness. The concept of resilience is located in the discourse of teaching as emotional practice and is found to be a multidimensional, ...socially constructed concept that is relative, dynamic and developmental in nature. The paper draws upon findings from a four year research project which explored career long variations in teachers’ commitment and effectiveness. Portraits of three resilient teachers in their early, mid and late careers are used to explore the interaction between teachers’ sense of efficacy, professional and personal identities, and their management of the interaction between these and the professional, situated and personal Scenarios which they experience in each professional life phase. Teachers’ capacity to manage such interactions is a sophisticated process which contributes strongly to the relative strength of their resilience. Understandings of the role of resilience in teachers’ management of the interactions between work and life over the course of a career and in different contexts adds to existing knowledge of variations in teachers’ work, lives, and effectiveness and contributes to the debate on standards, quality and retention.

Objective
The quality of professional life has attracted the attention of many managers owing to its importance, and organizational commitment differs according to work conditions in an ...organization. As the largest professional group in the healthcare system, nurses face many stressful factors that can endanger their quality of professional life and organizational commitment. Despite their huge importance, these 2 variables have rarely been addressed or evaluated in the nursing profession. The present study was conducted to determine the relationship between quality of professional life and organizational commitment in nurses working in the intensive care units (ICUs) and critical care units (CCUs).
Methods
The present descriptive–analytical study was conducted on 221 nurses working in the ICUs of hospitals affiliated to Shiraz University of Medical Sciences and selected through proportional stratified sampling. The data collection tools comprised demographic questionnaires, the quality of work-life questionnaire by Walton with 8 dimensions, and the valid and reliable organizational commitment scale by Meyer and Allen. The data were analyzed in SPSS, version 23 (IBM Corporation, Armonk, New York, United States), using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, including Spearman correlation, Pearson correlation, the Kruskal–Wallis test, the Mann–Whitney

Results
The mean scores of quality of professional life and organizational commitment were 58.996 ± 14.427 and 93.840 ± 13.900, respectively, in the ICU nurses. The Pearson test showed positive and significant relationships between quality of professional life and organizational commitment (

= 0.392,

< 0.001).
Conclusions
Given the positive relationship found in the present study between organizational commitment and quality of professional life, it is recommended that organizational commitment be modified to improve the quality of professional life in nurses.
The work of health professionals often involves physical as well as psychological strain. They constantly deal with traumatic situations of pain and suffering, which destabilize the sense of ...well-being. Compassion fatigue is a feeling that appears in these cases and is related to other variables such as burnout or emotional drain.
The principal aim of this project was to deepen the analysis of compassion fatigue and how it could be explained through the relationship with other constructs such as emotional intelligence and perceived health.
This work followed the STROBE checklist for cross-sectional studies. In this study 1,521 nurses (
= 47.32;
= 8.44) participated. The responses reported by the nurses were analyzed by classifying them as high or low compassion fatigue and the differences of both groups were analyzed for the variables of emotional intelligence, perceived health and quality of professional life.
It was obtained significant differences for all factors except for emotional intelligence factor. A linear regression analysis showed both emotional intelligence and perceived health helped to explain (12%) compassion fatigue.
This study provides light on comprehending the conception of compassion fatigue. It highlights the importance of intervention programs that improve the quality of professional life.
An improved understanding of the impact of skin cancer on patients' daily life may optimize disease management. This questionnaire survey of adult patients in real-world settings aimed to assess ...patient perception of the diagnosis announcement, and the impact of the diagnosis on the patients' professional and personal life. Data from 355 patients with melanoma and 320 patients with basal cell carcinoma were analysed. Melanoma significantly impacted the couple, and sexual relationships, as well as family and social life, and reduced the patient's libido more significantly than did basal cell carcinoma (all p < 0.05). Melanoma and basal cell carcinoma significantly impacted the patients' professional and personal lives. The word "cancer" used for a basal cell carcinoma announcement has a high anxiety-producing meaning for the patient. The announcement of each skin cancer should be made during a dedicated consultation, with more time devoted to the patient and with specific empathy, in order to improve reassurance of the patient.

Promoting decolonial educational practices assumes the determination to step outside of unique, stereotyped and majority narratives and constantly deconstruct patterns, cultural hierarchies, and ...relations of domination in which we are involved. In this perspective, the contribution discusses some issues emerged from the narratives collected within the research path Women’s voices, plural perspectives. Professional life stories in educational and intercultural contexts, recognising the contribution of women with a migration background as active constructors of generative actions and relationships in Italian socio-educational contexts. Through a series of meetings, dialogues and in-depth interviews, the project collected narratives and innovative and intercultural postures of twenty women activists and professionals. Listening to their stories challenges our educational contexts towards greater equity, denounces the persistence of intersectional discrimination and questions the ways of doing pedagogical research to develop a plural, shared and decolonial approach.
