Abstract
Objectives
Matrix Gla protein (MGP) is a calcification inhibitor that plays a role in preventing soft tissue calcification and local mineralization of the vascular wall. The present study ...aimed to assess the expression of MGP in Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells (PBMC) in adult patients with CVD pathologies and its association with the presence and severity of coronary artery calcium score (CACS) and conventional CVD risk factors.
Methods
MGP expression was measured in 87 individuals using real time qPCR. Subgrouping was performed according etiologic and metabolic CVD risk factors.
Results
A clear trend for a decreased MGP expression was observed in all subgroups with high CVD risk. This decrease was significant in abdominally obese hypertensive individuals and in those with dyslipidemia. MGP expression was significantly lower in patients representing high Total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels. A positive correlation between MGP expression and smoking status in patients with coronary calcium and in the CVD group was established. Atrial hypertension duration correlated negatively with MGP expression in the group without coronary calcium deposits.
Conclusions
The current study supports the hypothesis that MGP expression in PBMC probably reflects CVD pathology and is related to lipid metabolism dysregulation.

Bioremediation uses the potential of microorganisms for the removal of contaminants from the environment. The metabolic pathways that degrade contaminants into less toxic substances are very complex. Bioremediation mechanisms are studied on the gene level using advanced molecular biology techniques. The gene responsible for the production of a protein that degrades the contaminant can be isolated and introduced into another organism, creating an organism with enhanced bioremediation properties. Scientific research worldwide focuses on genetically engineered microorganisms. However, the greatest obstacle in their application for bioremediation is the legal framework and insufficient knowledge of the consequences of their release into the environment.

Objectives
Temozolomide (TMZ) is an effective drug for glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), but the mechanism underlying TMZ resistance is poorly understood. New evidence has revealed that the ...release of heat shock proteins (Hsps) derived from extracellular vesicles (EVs) play an important role in cancer progression by modulating tumor microenvironment and cellular cross-talk. This study aims to evaluate the effects of TMZ on the expression of EV-derived and cellular Hsps and cell motility in U87MG human glioblastoma cell line.
Methods
Glial-EVs were isolated from the culture medium and characterized by SEM and immunoblotting. The effect of TMZ treatments (25, 200 and 750 µM) on cell proliferation (MTT assay), migration (scratch assay), and Hsp60 and Hsp70 levels (immunoblotting) were evaluated.
Results
TMZ treatments led to an increase in intracellular Hsp70 while decreasing EV-derived Hsp70. Cellular Hsp60 level was elevated at the low dose of TMZ, but it reduced at higher TMZ concentrations. Hsp60 was also decreased in EVs secreted from TMZ-treated cells. Besides, TMZ treatment reduced the proliferation and migration of glioma cells in a dose-dependent manner.
Conclusions
Our results suggest that TMZ has the potential to target both EV-derived and cellular Hsps for GBM treatment, thus it may reduce cell motility.
Mlijeko simentalskih krava sadržavalo statistički najznačajnije i najviše razine antioksidativnih tvari, odnosno vitamina A - 0,465 mg L-1, E - 1,302 mg L-1 i D3 - 0,653 µg L-1 (P≤0,05), kao i β-laktoglobulin (3,28 g L-1, P≤0,01). Osim toga, kravlje mlijeko simentalca također odlikuje visokim sadržajem antimikrobnih proteina - laktoferina i lizozima (odnosno: 121,23 mg L-1, P≤0,01 i 9,66 µg L-1, P≤0,05) u usporedbi s drugim pasminama krava.
Until now, the properties of honey have been defined based exclusively on the content of plant components in the nectar of given plant. We showed that apalbumin1, the major royal jelly (RJ) protein, ...is an authentic and regular component of honey. Apalbumin1 and other RJ proteins and peptides are responsible for the immunostimulatory properties and antibiotic activity of honey. For the quantification of apalbumin1, an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed using polyclonal anti-apalbumin1 antibody. The method is suitable for honey authenticity determination; moreover it is useful for detection of the honey, honeybee pollen and RJ in products of medicine, pharmacy, cosmetics, and food industry, where presences of these honeybee products are declared. Results from the analysis for presence and amount of apalbumin1 in honeys will be used for high-throughput screening of honey samples over the world. On the basis of our experiments which show that royal jelly proteins are regular and physiologically active components of honey we propose to change the definition of honey (according to the EU Honey Directive 2001/110/EC) as follows: Honey is a natural sweet substance produced by honey bees from nectar of plants or from secretions of plants, or excretions of plant sucking insects, which honey bees collect, transform by combining with major royal jelly proteins and other specific substances of their own, deposit, dehydrate, store and leave in the honey comb to ripen and mature.
Nju pčele skupljaju, pretvaraju kombinacijom glavnih proteina matične mliječi i ostalih vlastitih specifičnih tvari, polažu, dehidriraju, pohranjuju i ostavljaju u saću da sazrije.
U ovom radu pokušat ćemo objasniti neka otkrića u tom području i njihovu vezu s citomorfološkim obilježjima, fenotipom mijelodisplastičnog sindroma.
2/4, BMP5/6/7/8a/8b, BMP9/10 i BMP12/13/14.
Traumatic brain injury is a common cause of death and disability worldwide. Early recognition of patients with brain cellular damage allows for early rehabilitation and patient outcome improvement.
...In this prospective study, the clinical conditions of patients with mild to moderate traumatic brain injury (TBI) were assessed, and patient serum S100B levels were measured. Patients were followed up one month later and evaluated for level of consciousness, presence or absence of post-traumatic headache, and daily activity performance (using the Barthel scale). Student's t-test and the chi-square test were used for data analysis, which was performed using SPSS software.
The mean serum S100B value was significantly lower for patients with minor TBI than for patients with moderate TBI (23.1±14.2 ng/dl and 134.0±245.0 ng/dl, respectively). Patients with normal CT scans also had statistically significantly lower serum S100B levels than patients with abnormal CT findings. The mean S100B value was statistically significantly higher for patients with suspected diffused axonal injury (632.18±516.1 ng/dl) than for patients with other abnormal CT findings (p=0.000): 24.97±22.9 ng/dl in patients with normal CT results; 41.56±25.7 ng/dl in patients with skull bone fracture; 57.38 ±28.9 ng/dl in patients with intracranial hemorrhage; and 76.23±38.3 ng/dl in patients with fracture plus intracranial hemorrhage).
Serum S100B levels increase in patients with minor to moderate TBIs, especially in those with diffused axonal injury. However, serum S100B values cannot accurately predict one-month neuropsychological outcomes and performance.
