This article aims to show how capitalist domain has expanded to sleep (to rest) and how the sleep is a turning point that forks in two ways: to resist the psychopolitical control system of a neoliberal order or to be an enhancer of capitalism. For this, three moments are used: the first, presents in a general way the mythological and religious antecedents of the dream; the second exhibits the current capitalist dominance of the dream; finally, the two biotypes of the human being that take place within the silent neoliberal revolution are presented, so that it is possible to find, in the sleep, a way out of the capitalist systemic reproduction circle. Thus, it can lead to an understanding of the privileged position of the sleep within the ontological and existential structure of the human being beyond its characteristic biological condition. Keywords: Sleep; Neoliberalism; Subjectivity; Psychopolitics.
With the advent of digitization and the affirmation of a symbolic value on social exchange within capital, public demonstrations of discontent are nowadays being performed along an aesthetic canon, ...thus losing their possible revolutionary potential. Once we internalized that it’s easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism, our struggles become individually symbolic and turn to aestheticism. Rather than stopping discontent, the power chooses to allow it because its performative content has already been neutralized. These demonstrations happen within a democratic culture – they play within the rules of the game. This is the imperial domination: to guarantee a resemblance of global peace for capital to develop, at the price of local omni-crisis. If Empire is born and shows itself as crisis, this crisis is felt at every peripheral point of the Empire. Solutions of governmentality have worked until now, but at a cost: even though there still are cathartic events, they don't manage release social tension completely – they always leave a mimetic residual. It's on those physical and psychological spaces of individual recognition that the Empire exercises its domination. And it’s there that forms of resistance can be tested.
Positive Psychology has reconstructed how we understand happiness. The practices and discourses it presents to perform that reconceptualization appear as if free from political interest or ...intentionality. However, this article will show that its proposals define a subtle new form of government which we will call Psychopolitics. Instead of placing the population or the body of the citizen at the centre of political struggles, it focuses on the psyche. Through an extreme defence of positive emotions and happiness as the key to a good life, Positive Psychology promotes a type of friendly power relations, which instead of punishing motivates and empowers the individual's creativity. To illustrate all of this, we conducted a case study with a Positive Psychology training course taught in a Spanish state university. Content analysis was used to explain the recurring themes and practices of this new discipline of positivity, showing how health is redefined around the happiness axis, and how happiness becomes an individual responsibility. We conclude that all these dimensions are simply a categorical definition of a new type of power relations which may characterise the 21st century.
This essay presents a transdisciplinary, reparatory history of police violence in Britain during the nineteen seventies and eighties. I consider how the histories of transcontinental colonial ...nationalisms and anticolonial internationalisms were intertwined with the development of transcolonial counterinsurgency operations and local modes of policing from the late eighteenth century. I argue that this is essential to an understanding of police violence in Britain that is interwoven with the trajectories of anticolonial, antifascist and antiracist political cultures. I discuss the psychopolitical legacies of police violence which illustrates the beginnings of a broader theory of racialised subjectification that I call biocolonisation.
The data about our affects, the so-called emotional data, constitute nowadays a valuable commodity, collected and marketed by digital communication platforms. Among the interested in obtaining it are ...financial and political corporations that base their decisions on information about network user’s affects. There are different ways to generate emotional data, one of which is the sentiment analysis. This article addresses some characteristics of this tool, clarifying its operation and the psychometric knowledges that constitute it. Sentiment analysis is understood not only as a tool for detecting affects, but also for emotional production. It is in this sense that it is possible to outline it — beyond a psychometric instrument — as a psychopolitical apparatus, a technique that operates by instrumentalizing emotions for a capitalization beyond the individual. In this sense, concepts such as “control society” (Deleuze, 1992), “confessional society” (Bauman, 2012/2014), and the very notion of “psychopolitics” (Han, 2014/2014b), are useful to understand aspects of emotional production based on new communication technologies. This article, therefore, aims to contribute to the understanding of an important factor which is still somewhat neglected in studies on big data and surveillance: the monitoring and production of affects as a form of subjective control.
This contribution engages the work of the contemporary South African Psychologist, Kopano Ratele, to illustrate the facets of sociopolitical and psychological dimensions of psychology from the Global ...South and its relevance for reimagining psychology across the continent and the global world. Ratele's African psychology framework offers us both a contemporary and critical analytic lens to reflect on the psychic life of power from the vantage point of Africa. This article explores two thematic contributions of Ratele's African psychology: (a) culture and tradition and (b) Black interiority. Ratele's African psychology presents a marked departure from much African psychology scholarship in its attention to the psychopolitics of Black life and Black death. Furthermore, by presenting African psychology as orientation, Ratele can engage both ontological and methodological dimensions of Black subjectivity as diverse, complex, and nonessentialist. In putting forward Ratele's scholarship as a key contribution to African and Black psychology, this article thus addresses the current epistemological impasse that seems to exist in psychology in Africa. This article concludes that Ratele's African psychology may provide us with a means of addressing this impasse toward making psychology in Africa relevant.
Public Significance Statement
This study suggests that psychosocial trauma and suffering and psychological well-being in Africa may be better understood and addressed through African-centered psychology. Challenges of psychology in Africa suggest that new methods and theories that center African worldviews are necessary to address the current impasse faced by the discipline. An African psychology also requires a more critical interrogation of culture and tradition. It must also address histories of colonialism and racism that are part of intergenerational traumas.
The goal of this article is to compare and contrast the traditional Western versus the postmodern colonization of the mind. How is the current technological age barbaric? I investigate Aimé Césaire's ...writings, refer to Lea Ypi's definition of colonialism, and discuss society's use of psychopolitics to find the answer.
