Music sound has shown to affect brain function and cardiac activity. Based on this premise, this study examines the effects of sound stimulation, such as music and stress noise, on the balance of the ...autonomous nervous system (ANS). To monitor such effects, physiological data was collected from a group of volunteers to analyze pulse rate variability (PRV), as well as electrodermal activity (EDA). The final goals of this study are supported by the possibility of automatically integrating musical stimuli into a smart environment to potentially lower individual's stress levels, as well as to improve their well-being. To accomplish this objective, this research involved three different phases. The first was based on the development of a biomedical wearable sensor for measuring PRV and its validation using a reference sensing system. Good correlation results were obtained between both devices. The second consisted of a preliminary study of the effects of ambient, classical, and metal music on PRV. Significant variations of PRV were measured between the three music genres. Considering the obtained results in the previous phase and overcoming the limitations presented in it, the third phase was based on a more in-depth study of the effects of musical stimuli and noise stress, through PRV analysis and the measurement of galvanic skin response (GSR). The obtained results suggested that noise stress contributes to the increase of sympathetic activity. In contrast, ambient music proved to be very effective in increasing parasympathetic activity and stabilizing comfort levels.
Sample entropy is an effective nonlinear index for analyzing pulse rate variability (PRV) signal, but it has problems with a large amount of calculation and time consumption. Therefore, this study ...proposes a fast sample entropy calculation method to analyze the PRV signal according to the microprocessor process of data updating and the principle of sample entropy. The simulated data and PRV signal are employed as experimental data to verify the accuracy and time consumption of the proposed method. The experimental results on simulated data display that the proposed improved sample entropy can improve the operation rate of the entropy value by a maximum of 47.6 times and an average of 28.6 times and keep the entropy value unchanged. Experimental results on PRV signal display that the proposed improved sample entropy has great potential in the real-time processing of physiological signals, which can increase approximately 35 times.
Visit-to-visit body weight variability (BWV), pulse rate variability (PRV), and blood pressure variability (BPV) have been respectively linked to multiple health outcomes. The associations of the ...combination of long-term variability in physiological measures with mortality and epigenetic age acceleration (EAA) remain largely unknown.
We constructed a composite score of physiological variability (0-3) of large variability in BWV, PRV, and BPV (the top tertiles) in 2006/2008-2014/2016 in the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) and 2011-2015 in the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). All-cause mortality was documented through 2018. EAA was calculated using thirteen DNA methylation-based epigenetic clocks among 1047 participants in a substudy of the HRS. We assessed the relation of the composite score to the risk of mortality among 6566 participants in the HRS and 6906 participants in the CHARLS by Cox proportional models and then investigated its association with EAA using linear regression models.
A higher score of variability was associated with higher mortality risk in both cohorts (pooled hazard ratio HR per one-point increment, 1.27; 95% confidence interval CI, 1.18, 1.39; P-heterogeneity = 0.344), after adjustment for multiple confounders and baseline physiological measures. Specifically, each SD increment in BWV, PRV, and BPV was related to 21% (95% CI: 15%, 28%), 6% (0%, 13%), and 12% (4%, 19%) higher hazard of mortality, respectively. The composite score was significantly related to EAA in second-generation clocks trained on health outcomes (e.g., standardized coefficient = 0.126 in the Levine clock, 95% CI: 0.055, 0.196) but not in most first-generation clocks trained on chronological age.
Larger variability in physiological measures was associated with a higher risk of mortality and faster EAA.

A program based on Lock-in Amplifier technology was written in Python to implement a novel technique, Dynamic Phase Extraction. It was tested using a breath pacer and a PPG sensor on 6 subjects who followed a breath pacer at varied breathing rates. The main aim of this work is to identify alterations in the morphology of the pulse photoplethysmogram (PPG) signal, due to the exposure of the subjects to a hyperbaric environment. Additionally, ...their Pulse Rate Variability (PRV) is analysed to characterise the response of their Autonomic Nervous System (ANS). To do that, 28 volunteers are introduced into a hyperbaric chamber and five sequential stages with different atmospheric pressures from 1 atm to 5 atm are performed. In this work, nineteen morphological parameters of the PPG signal are analysed: the pulse amplitude; eight parameters related to pulse width; eight parameters related to pulse area; and the two two pulse slopes. Also, classical time and frequency parameters of PRV are computed. Notable widening of the pulses width is observed in the stages analysed. The PPG area increases with pressure, with no significant changes when the initial pressure is recovered. These changes in PPG waveform may be caused by an increase in the systemic vascular resistance as a consequence of of vasoconstriction in the extremities, suggesting a sympathetic activation. However, the PRV results show an augmented parasympathetic activity and a reduction in the parameters that characterise the sympathetic response. So, only a sympathetic activation is detected in the peripheral region, as reflected by PPG morphology. The information regarding the ANS and the cardiovascular response that can be extracted from the PPG signal, as well as its compatibility with wet conditions make this signal the most suitable for studying the physiological response in hyperbaric environments.
In the assessment of autonomic function by heart rate variability (HRV), the framework that the power of high-frequency component or its surrogate indices reflects parasympathetic activity, while the ...power of low-frequency component or LF/HF reflects sympathetic activity has been used as the theoretical basis for the interpretation of HRV. Although this classical framework has contributed greatly to the widespread use of HRV for the assessment of autonomic function, it was obtained from studies of short-term HRV (typically 5‑10 min) under tightly controlled conditions. If it is applied to long-term HRV (typically 24 h) under free-running conditions in daily life, erroneous conclusions could be drawn. Also, long-term HRV could contain untapped useful information that is not revealed in the classical framework. In this review, we discuss the limitations of the classical framework and present studies that extracted autonomic function indicators and other useful biomedical information from long-term HRV using novel approaches beyond the classical framework. Those methods include non-Gaussianity index, HRV sleep index, heart rate turbulence, and the frequency and amplitude of cyclic variation of heart rate.
Remote camera-based measurement of physiology has great potential for healthcare and affective computing. Recent advances in computer vision and signal processing have enabled photoplethysmography ...(PPG) measurement using commercially available cameras. However, there remain challenges in recovering accurate noncontact PPG measurements in the presence of rigid head motion. When a subject is moving, their face may be turned away from one camera, be obscured by an object, or move out of the frame resulting in missing observations. As the calculation of pulse rate variability (PRV) requires analysis over a time window of several minutes, the effect of missing observations on such features is deleterious. We present an approach for fusing partial color-channel signals from an array of cameras that enable physiology measurements to be made from moving subjects, even if they leave the frame of one or more cameras, which would not otherwise be possible with only a single camera. We systematically test our method on subjects (N=25) using a set of six, 5-min tasks (each repeated twice) involving different levels of head motion. This results in validation across 25 h of measurement. We evaluate pulse rate and PRV parameter estimation including statistical, geometric, and frequency-based measures. The median absolute error in pulse rate measurements was 0.57 beats-per-minute (BPM). In all but two tasks with the greatest motion, the median error was within 0.4 BPM of that from a contact PPG device. PRV estimates were significantly improved using our proposed approach compared to an alternative not designed to handle missing values and multiple camera signals; the error was reduced by over 50%. Without our proposed method, errors in pulse rate would be very high, and estimation of PRV parameters would not be feasible due to significant data loss.
Many previous studies have shown that the remote photoplethysmography (rPPG) can measure the Heart Rate (HR) signal with very high accuracy. The remote measurement of the Pulse Rate Variability (PRV) ...signal is also possible, but this is much more complicated because it is then necessary to detect the peaks on the temporal rPPG signal, which is usually quite noisy and has a lower temporal resolution than PPG signals obtained by contact equipment. Since the PRV signal is vital for various applications such as remote recognition of stress and emotion, the improvement of PRV measurement by rPPG is a critical task. Contact based PRV measurement has already been investigated, but the research on remotely measured PRV is very limited. In this paper, we propose to use the Periodic Variance Maximization (PVM) method to extract the rPPG signal and event-related Two-Window algorithm to improve the peak detection for PRV measurement. We have made several contributions. Firstly, we show that the newly proposed PVM method and Two-Window algorithm can be used for PRV measurement in the non-contact scenario. Secondly, we propose a method to adaptively determine the parameters of the Two-Window method. Thirdly, we compare the algorithm with other attempts for improving the non-contact PRV measurement such as the Slope Sum Function (SSF) method and the Local Maximum method. We calculated several features and compared the accuracy based on the ground truth provided by contact equipment. Our experiments showed that this algorithm performed the best of all the algorithms.
