Big Data for Qualitative Research covers everything small data researchers need to know about big data, from the potentials of big data analytics to its methodological and ethical challenges. The ...data that we generate in everyday life is now digitally mediated, stored, and analyzed by web sites, companies, institutions, and governments. Big data is large volume, rapidly generated, digitally encoded information that is often related to other networked data, and can provide valuable evidence for study of phenomena. This book explores the potentials of qualitative methods and analysis for big data, including text mining, sentiment analysis, information and data visualization, netnography, follow-the-thing methods, mobile research methods, multimodal analysis, and rhythmanalysis. The aim of this study was to determine the preferences and expectations of healthy individuals in case they were diagnosed with a fatal disease. The study was carried out qualitatively with 27 ...academicians. After the qualitative data were analyzed, three themes were formed which were “It is necessary to know the truth”, “There is a reason of ignoring the truth”, “The truths affect the expectations”. According to the results of our study, it was determined that there was different personal reasons between individuals who want to know the truth and who want to ignore the truth, and the state of knowing death also differentiate the expectations.
IMPORTANCE: Home health care workers care for community-dwelling adults and play an important role in supporting patients with confirmed and suspected coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) who remain ...at home. These workers are mostly middle-aged women and racial/ethnic minorities who typically earn low wages. Despite being integral to patient care, these workers are often neglected by the medical community and society at large; thus, developing a health care system capable of addressing the COVID-19 crisis and future pandemics requires a better understanding of the experiences of home health care workers. OBJECTIVE: To understand the experiences of home health care workers caring for patients in New York City during the COVID-19 pandemic. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: From March to April 2020, a qualitative study with 1-to-1 semistructured interviews of 33 home health care workers in New York City was conducted in partnership with the 1199SEIU Home Care Industry Education Fund, a benefit fund of the 1199 Service Employees International Union United Healthcare Workers East, the largest health care union in the US. Purposeful sampling was used to identify and recruit home health care workers. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: Audio-recorded interviews were professionally transcribed and analyzed using grounded theory. Major themes and subthemes were identified. RESULTS: In total, 33 home health care workers employed by 24 unique home care agencies across the 5 boroughs of New York City participated. Participants had a mean (SD) age of 47.6 (14.0) years, 32 (97%) were women, 21 (64%) were Black participants, and 6 (18%) were Hispanic participants. Five major themes emerged: home health care workers (1) were on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic but felt invisible; (2) reported a heightened risk for virus transmission; (3) received varying amounts of information, supplies, and training from their home care agencies; (4) relied on nonagency alternatives for support, including information and supplies; and (5) were forced to make difficult trade-offs in their work and personal lives. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: In this qualitative analysis, home health care workers reported providing frontline essential care, often at personal risk, during the COVID-19 pandemic. They experienced challenges that exacerbated the inequities they face as a marginalized workforce. Interventions and policies to better support these frontline health care professionals are urgently needed.
This article attends to the possibilities that emerged from pedagogical invitation to the more-than-human in a qualitative inquiry course. We focus on the situated ethical and (micro)political ...grapplings that emerged from paying attention to the more-than-human alongside asymmetrical human and more-than-human lifeworlds. Our orientation toward the ethical and (micro)political is enacted through visual, poetic, and narrative storytelling that attempts to make visible what emerged for the students’ research and their becomings as qualitative inquirers in relation with course pedagogies. Our storytelling enacts a feminist practice that “stays with the trouble” stirred up by decentering the human while remaining accountable to enduring systemic, colonial, racialized, and gendered presences. While the particular lines of flight enacted by the pedagogical invitations in the course differed for each student, they come together in underlining the mattering of pedagogical and inquiry-based attunements toward the more-than-human within unequal worlds.
The community Parque Riachuelo I, located in Manaus (AM), has existed for about 40 years and was the result of disordered occupations. It is based in the urban zone, but it is not yet fully ...urbanized, presenting rural aspects (small river, virgin forest, mud streets). Hence, it suffers from lack of infrastructure, access to basic social services and leisure. Despite the difficulties, the residents organize festivities on commemorative dates. From a scientific initiation research, in this paper we aim to present which festivities have already taken place in the community and their meaning for the residents, to examine how they influenced the strengthening of community network. From the point of view of Community Social Psychology, we conducted a qualitative research with six semi-structured interviews with key participants and performed a content analysis. The results pointed to the remembrance of eight outstanding festivities, with meaning and importance of engagement and motivation on political struggles, union, strengthening of community ties and belonging sense. We have verified that the festivities have become an essential strategy tool for union and leisure, so that in each celebration more residents participate and dialogue on community issues, promoting community strengthening. Está sediada na zona urbana, mas ainda não é plenamente urbanizada, apresentando aspectos rurais (igarapés, mata virgem, ruas de barro). Por isso, sofre com a falta de infraestrutura, de acesso a serviços sociais básicos e de lazer. Apesar das dificuldades, os moradores organizam festejos em datas comemorativas. Assim, a partir de pesquisa de iniciação científica, neste artigo temos por objetivo apresentar quais festejos já aconteceram na comunidade e seu significado para os moradores, para examinar como os mesmos influenciaram no fortalecimento das redes comunitárias. Partindo da Psicologia Social Comunitária, realizamos pesquisa qualitativa, com seis entrevistas semiestruturadas com participantes-chave e respectiva análise de conteúdo. Os resultados apontam a lembrança de oito festejos marcantes, com o significado e importância de promover o engajamento e motivação nas lutas políticas, união, fortalecimento dos laços comunitários e sentimento de pertença. Verificamos que os festejos se tornaram uma ferramenta estratégica essencial para união e lazer, de modo que a cada festejo mais moradores participam e dialogam sobre as questões da comunidade, propiciando o fortalecimento comunitário. La comunidad Parque Riachuelo I, ubicada en Manaus (AM), existe hace 40 años y fue fruto de ocupaciones desordenadas. Está ubicada en la zona urbana, pero aún no está totalmente urbanizada, presentando aspectos rurales (arroyos, selva virgen, calles de barro). Por eso, sufre con falta de infraestructura, de acceso a servicios sociales básicos y de ocio. A pesar de las dificultades, los residentes organizan festejos en fechas conmemorativas. Así, a partir de investigación de iniciación científica, en este artículo tenemos por objetivo presentar cuáles fiestas ya ocurrieron en la comunidad y su significado para los residentes, para examinar cómo los mismos influenciaron en el fortalecimiento de las redes comunitarias. Partiendo de la Psicología Social Comunitaria, realizamos investigación cualitativa, con seis entrevistas semiestructuradas con participantes clave y respectivo análisis de contenido. Los resultados apuntan el recuerdo de ocho fiestas más importantes, con el significado e importancia de promover el compromiso y motivación en las luchas políticas, unión, fortalecimiento de lazos comunitarios y sentimiento de pertenencia. Verificamos que las fiestas se han convertido en una herramienta estratégica esencial para la unión y el ocio, de modo que a cada festejo más residentes participan y dialogan sobre las cuestiones de la comunidad, propiciando el fortalecimiento comunitario.
The article imagines a materially informed post-qualitative research. Focusing upon issues of language and representation, under the influence of Deleuze's Logic of Sense, it argues for research ...practices capable of engaging the materiality of language itself. It proposes the development of non- or post-representational research practices, drawing on contemporary materialist work that rejects the static, hierarchical logic of representation, and practices such as interpretation and analysis as conventionally understood. The article explores the ontological and the practical implications of this state of affairs, via a re-reading of a fragment of what would have been called data. Offering relief from the ressentiment and piety that have characterised qualitative methodologists' engagements with scientific method, the 'post' could therefore be read as signalling the demise of qualitative research. Or at least, as inaugurating a qualitative research that would be unrepresentable to itself.
Abstract Background Directly observed therapy (DOT) for monitoring treatment adherence for multidrug-resistant (MDR) tuberculosis is often impractical because of complicated dosing schedules. Video ...observed therapy (VOT) using internet and mobile technologies is potentially an efficient and cost-effective alternative for patients whose social circumstances enable them to maintain possession of a smartphone and regularly send video files. This study aimed to explore the attitudes and perspectives of patients with MDR tuberculosis supervised with VOT to inform future intervention development. Methods Semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten patients with MDR tuberculosis receiving VOT in London, UK, between Oct 5, 2013, and March 10, 2014. With a grounded theory approach to organise comments into analytical themes, recorded interviews were conducted in patients’ homes or in cafés and transcribed verbatim. Practical and technical issues, effect on daily life, and emotional response, including feelings around surveillance, privacy, and security, were explored. Findings The interviews provided powerful insights into patients’ experiences and attitudes, both positive and negative, about the patient-observer relationship, the ways in which VOT helped structure tablet-taking, and practical issues around the use of technology. Overall, patients reported very high levels of satisfaction as illustrated by the following quotes: “I was getting tired of DOT. I thought I would be a lot freer to continue with my daily life—all that time and effort you've saved me—I didn't need much convincing. With the DOT, it felt like…there was some kind of stigma and for that reason they are monitoring you. It felt like being a criminal.” “I wouldn't have felt comfortable just meeting a person online—I would have been like, ‘who's that person, I don't even know him?’ But I'm really pleased you came all the way to my house, to make me comfortable and show me what to do…and I took it from there and it was really good.” Interpretation This exploratory study suggests that VOT is practical and acceptable to patients with MDR tuberculosis, provided they receive effective training and continuing support. Qualitative investigation of patients’ experiences is essential to inform the future design, assessment, and implementation of this promising intervention.
