As mass media burgeoned in the years between the first and second world wars, so did another phenomenon-celebrity. Beginning in Hollywood with the studio-orchestrated transformation of uncredited ...actors into brand-name stars, celebrity also spread to writers, whose personal appearances and private lives came to fascinate readers as much as their work.Women, Celebrity, and Literary Culture between the Warsprofiles seven American, Canadian, and British women writers-Dorothy Parker, Anita Loos, Mae West, L. M. Montgomery, Margaret Kennedy, Stella Gibbons, and E. M. Delafield-who achieved literary celebrity in the 1920s and 1930s and whose work remains popular even today.
Faye Hammill investigates how the fame and commercial success of these writers-as well as their gender-affected the literary reception of their work. She explores how women writers sought to fashion their own celebrity images through various kinds of public performance and how the media appropriated these writers for particular cultural discourses. She also reassesses the relationship between celebrity culture and literary culture, demonstrating how the commercial success of these writers caused literary elites to denigrate their writing as "middlebrow," despite the fact that their work often challenged middle-class ideals of marriage, home, and family and complicated class categories and lines of social discrimination.
The first comparative study of North American and British literary celebrity,Women, Celebrity, and Literary Culture between the Warsoffers a nuanced appreciation of the middlebrow in relation to modernism and popular culture.
Libraries provide readers' advisory services to young people to foster reading for pleasure. The Booktok community on TikTok is a resource that can be drawn upon to support promotion of books with ...this demographic. A hybrid content analysis of 116 TikTok videos explores presence of hashtags, authors and books, and recurring themes promoted in Booktok videos. Popular hashtags build community and promoted authors and books are a small and select group. Young people use Booktok to provide recommendations, explore reader experience and emotional response, generate reader community and identity, discuss fictional characters and places, develop and promote writing, and discuss personal library management and being a reader in the family. Libraries' reader advisory services for young people can use these findings to employ language of the discourse community for insider signposting of the library's physical space and give greater primacy to the emotional response evoked by books and reading.
•Young people use Booktok to provide recommendations and explore reader experience and emotional response.•Booktok can generate reader community and identity and allow discussion of fictional characters and places.•Booktok is also used to discuss writing, personal library management and being a reader in the family.•Hashtags, shared language and efforts to consolidate community support the development of reading community on Booktok.•Findings can inform young readers' advisory services for libraries seeking to build young reader friendly spaces.
Recent developments in stereoselective 1,2-cisglycosylation that have emerged during the past decade are surveyed herein. For detailed coverage of the previous achievements in the field the reader is ...referred to our earlier reviews: A. V. Demchenko, Curr. Org. Chem., 2003, 7, 35-79 and Synlett, 2003, 1225-1240.
The importance of reading for school and career success is well documented, but there are countless benefits to reading for quality of life. This column explores the goal of creating lifelong readers ...in school libraries, the characteristics avid readers share, and ideas to develop these readers.
This review article presents the most recent developments in the use of materials based on dipyrromethene (DPM) and azadipyrromethenes (ADPM) for organic photovoltaic (OPV) applications. These ...chromophores and their corresponding BF
2
-chelated derivatives BODIPY and aza-BODIPY, respectively, are well known for fluorescence-based applications but are relatively new in the field of photovoltaic research. This review examines the variety of relevant designs, synthetic methodologies and photophysical studies related to materials that incorporate these porphyrinoid-related dyes in their architecture. The main idea is to inspire readers to explore new avenues in the design of next generation small-molecule and bulk-heterojunction solar cell (BHJSC) OPV materials based on DPM chromophores. The main concepts are briefly explained, along with the main challenges that are to be resolved in order to take full advantage of solar energy.
This review article presents the most recent developments in the use of materials based on dipyrromethene and some structurally related azadipyrromethenes for OPV applications.
This tutorial outlines the basic theoretical concepts and tools which underpin the fundamentals of phase-coherent electron transport through single molecules. The key quantity of interest is the ...transmission coefficient
T
(
E
), which yields the electrical conductance, current-voltage relations, the thermopower
S
and the thermoelectric figure of merit ZT of single-molecule devices. Since
T
(
E
) is strongly affected by quantum interference (QI), three manifestations of QI in single-molecules are discussed, namely Mach-Zehnder interferometry, Breit-Wigner resonances and Fano resonances. A simple MATLAB code is provided, which allows the novice reader to explore QI in multi-branched structures described by a tight-binding (Hückel) Hamiltonian. More generally, the strengths and limitations of materials-specific transport modelling based on density functional theory are discussed.
