Selected excerpts of representative novels of various genres have a special place in gymnasium's and secondary vocational schools' reading books. Therefore, the methodical approach in the ...interpretive processing of this complex and layered artistic literature material is a serious teaching challenge. The hypothetical starting point in this case is the phenomenon of dystopia present in the chosen reading books which is seen through literary and artistic processing. Through this topic, we have meticulously and seriously analyzed the relationship between the novel and the reading books, as a first and obligatory textbooks for teaching literature. The aim of our research is to determine the presence of novelistic dystopian art material in gymnasium's and secondary vocational schools' manners of interpretation. The subject of the research are secondary schools' textbooks in the Republic of Serbia present in teaching practice in the period from the first half of the XX century and in the first decades of the XXI century. We based the research on forty copies of reading books from all secondary education grades. The reading samples are works of thirty authors and are printed in several different-unmodified, modified, supplementary and revised editions - focusing on the most characteristic copies of reading books from different periods and system and program phases that significantly affected their content. We believe that the chosen sample of the study is reliable, and the conclusions we came to are a realistic presentation of the state of novelistic prose in our reading books. Although the novelistic text is only one literary reading segment, our findings are largely valid for the overall genre-textbook treatment of literature. The research in this case was conducted on the reading books from the Zavod za udžbenike, which is our only decades-old publisher of textbooks that is 'current' even today.
This study examines interactions in an extensive reading (ER) book club intended to provide opportunities for students to practice English as their second language (L2). Utilizing multimodal ...conversation analysis, the study shows how students display willingness to participate (WTP) when they are free to initiate or avoid communication. The analysis of seven and a half hours of videorecordings of meetings held over six weeks at a Korean university demonstrates that several practices, particularly responding to questions and expanding on storytelling, reflect WTP. The study particularly highlights the importance of non-verbal cues in signaling and managing the WTP. The study suggests that student initiative can lead to more interactive and engaging learning environments, which may be especially significant in L2 settings where promoting student talk is a primary objective. The findings have implications for educators regarding the dynamics of student participation and agency, and contribute to our understanding of the nuanced relationships between learner initiative and WTP in fluency-oriented language learning contexts.
The focus of the research was on the prose of Antonije Isaković in the context of teaching literature and language. Since the sixties of the 20th century, the stories from Isaković's first prose book ...Velika deca (1953) have been covered in classes, while Isaković's prose is not represented in current plans and programs. In elementary schools, the stories "Kašika" and "Crveni šal" were interpreted, while in secondary schools and gymnasiums was covered the prose collection Velika deca or a selection from it. The paper examined the status of Isaković's prose in the teaching context, based primarily on reading books from that period. Moreover, the research was an occasion for the analysis of the didactic-methodical apparatus of reading books, which are elementary textbooks for the teaching of literature.
This study shows how a facilitator gives directive-instructions to create interactional spaces for second language (L2) learning in an online setting by investigating interactions in a video-mediated ...extensive reading (ER) book club. Taking a multimodal conversation analysis approach, the study observes the facilitator's changing practices of instruction-giving over time, focusing on two points. First, from a general standpoint, this study focuses on the way the facilitator, through instruction-giving, establishes the institutional boundaries of participation for the book talk activity. Second, and more specifically, this study focuses on the way the facilitator informs the students of or talks about questions she provides as prompts for the students' book talk. Overall, the analysis indicates that, over time, the facilitator appears to be taking a less controlled approach toward the students' freedom to choose the topic of discussion during the book talk activity of the book club. The analysis also shows the facilitator diversifying the interactional resources on which she draws in doing question talk, as well as her becoming more aware of the students' understanding of the questions and therefore giving instructions that are clearer for the students. The findings contribute to a growing body of research on the embodied work of L2 teaching in general, and on facilitators' instruction-giving in video-mediated interaction specifically. The study also offers methodological implications for conducting video-mediated interaction research and pedagogical implications regarding giving instructions in online settings.
With the occurrence pandemic of Coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the World Health Organization and health officials in all countries of the world were forced to comply with quarantine conditions. On ...the one hand, the stress of this dangerous viral disease, and other hand, staying home for an indefinite period of time does not have pleasant consequences. But more importantly, the evidence suggests there is a possibility that such cases will be repeated.

A broad statistical analysis of the book publishing industry over 1917–2017 is performed, with focus on the dynamics of industry indicators in 1991–2017. It is shown that throughout this period the ...average annual growth in the number of books and brochures produced by the book publishing industry made 620 units, or 5.13%. But the circulation had overall negative dynamics: its average annual decline made 3310 thousand, or 3.9%. The largest absolute decline in the circulation is recorded in 1993, 1999, and 2015. It is revealed that the per capita output in the industry was 1.5 books in 2013, 0.8 in 2015, and 1.1 in 2017. It is stressed that because books constitute a culture component and contribute in the moral enrichment of the society and book reading enhance the education level of a nation, the book supply of the population observed throughout the period of the Ukraine’s independence is unacceptable. A fact raising concern is that reading ranks fifth as a way of recreation in the Ukrainian society.
It is demonstrated that the assumption about minor significance of a printed book in the digital era is fallacious and ungrounded. Transformations in science and technology, politics or economy have been persisting in Ukraine, but its people remain to be book readers. A book may change the format or production methods and materials, but a book is an integral attribute of the humanity. The events in Ukraine, both positive and negative, had strong impact on the development and change of socio-economic paradigms, which had implications for the book publishing industry. The development of any industry cannot be considered in isolation, by taking its dynamics off the context of socio-political processes and phenomena. It is shown that in the present-day conditions, when the living standards of the population are largely dependent on the salary rate or the household income, the need to purchase books had lower priority than meeting vital necessities of daily life. The importance of a further in-depth study of the external factors with impact on the industry development is stressed.
Aim: In this study, it was aimed to determine the effect of regular book reading activity applied to the older adults who receive institutional care on their mental health. Method and Materi-als: The ...study included 43 conscious older adults, who stayed in different institutions in Sivas, had a mini-mental test of 17 points and above, had no hearing and communication disabilities and volunteered to participate in the study. Data were collected with, data collection form and Stand-ardized Mini Mental Test scale. The obtained study data were analyzed with SPSS 22.0. The signif-icance level was determined as 0.05 at the 95% confidence interval. Findings: While the average age of the older adults participating in the study was determined as 69.58 ± 6.58, it is seen that their distribution by gender is very close to each other. It is seen that the female participants (51.2%, N=22) are in the ratio of male participants (48.8%, N=21), most of them are primary school graduates (39.5%) and the rate of continuous drug use is quite high (90.7%). In the form in which the presence of chronic disease was also questioned, it was not included in the rate because all of the participants stated that they had at least one chronic disease. While the pre-activity mean SMMT score of the participants was determined as 21.39 ± 2.44, the post-activity mean SMMT score was 23.32 ± 2.10. The difference is statistically significant (p<0.05). There is a significant increase in the mental levels of the older adults after the activity. Results: Due to the visual impairments with advancing age and the low literacy level in advanced ages, reading the book they want to the older adults at certain times every day, allowing them to listen to the book they are curious about instead of trying to read has positively affected their mental health. Regu-lar book reading activity planning for the older adults can be considered as an important occupa-tional therapy.
