This research emphasizes on the predictive variables of the intention to purchase an organic product.
The paper focuses on the consumer involvement in organic consumption and sensitivity to price as ...motives of consumer purchase intention as well as the moderating role of the product regional identity.
The findings allowed us to deduce that the interviewed Tunisian customers intend to buy organic olive oil because they are concerned about preserving both their health and their environment. Also, these customers are more involved in regional organic products and are able to pay high prices to buy these products in order to profit from their safety, traceability and high quality.
•Consumer involvement and price sensitivity have been considered the main antecedents of organic product purchase intention.•The regional identity of organic product moderates the relationships between purchase intention and its antecedents.•The Tunisian consumer is less sensitive to price of regional organic olive oil due to its high perceived nutritional value.•Insufficient researches are done regarding the purchasing intention towards organic products in the Tunisian context.
Against the background of regional development, this article analyses the rise and fall of ‘thin identities’, which tend to be utilitarian and deployed to promote regional development. We focus on ...two constructed regional identities in the Greater Pearl River Delta (GPRD) in China: Pearl River Delta (PRD) and Guangdong‐Hong Kong‐Macau Greater Bay Area (GBA). We analyse the adoption of these identities through news items published in newspapers in both China's Mainland and Hong Kong. The results show that both economic and political events influence the adoption of thin identities, first PRD and then GBA. In the content analysis of news items, we investigate the pathways to their adoption and possible evolution towards thickness (broader social and cultural embeddedness) by distinguishing economic, political, social, and cultural topics. The wish of policymakers to adopt new thin identities, however, does affect the credibility of existing thick ones, a point deserving of serious consideration.
The article considers the evolution of the concept of “region”, which in the modern sense is no longer just a geographical entity. Prerequisites for its formation in a given area are historical, ...socio-cultural features, as well as the specifics of political organization. It is noted that in the process of regionalism (integration processes associated with the acquisition of subjectivity by regions), the actors of international relations form a certain degree of regional ability to articulate their interests. Based on the ideas of A. Harrell and A. Paasi on the formation of regions, the role of regional identity in this process is determined. The factors of identity of South American countries and the role of regional identity in the process of formation of the Latin American macroregion is considered. It is concluded that in the international arena, Latin American states are increasingly acting as an ideologically integrated entity due to the factor of identity and the formation of a common Latin American consciousness.
While the media tends to pay the most attention to violent secessionist movements or peaceful independence movements, it is just as important to understand why there are regions where political ...movements for autonomy fail to develop. In neglecting regions without political movements or full-blown independence demands, theories may be partial at best and incorrect at worst. State Institutions, Civic Associations, and Identity Demands examines over a dozen regions, comparing and contrasting successful cases to abandoned, unsuccessful, or dormant cases. The cases range from successful secession (East Timor, Singapore) and ongoing secessionist movements (Southern Philippines), to internally divided regional movements (Kachin State), low-level regionalist stirrings (Lanna, Taiwan), and local but not regional mobilization of identity (Bali, Minahasan), all the way to failed movements (Bataks, South Maluku) and regions that remain politically inert (East and North Malaysia, Northeast Thailand). While each chapter is written by a country expert, the contributions rely on a range of methods, from comparative historical analysis, to ethnography, field interviews, and data from public opinion surveys. Together, they contribute important new knowledge on little-known cases that nevertheless illuminate the history of regions and ethnic groups in Southeast Asia. Although focused on Southeast Asia, the book identifies the factors that can explain why movements emerge and successfully develop and concludes with a chapter by Henry Hale that illustrates how this can be applied globally.
Increasing evidence has suggested that astrocytes demonstrate striking regionally allocated functional heterogeneity. Here, we discuss how this spatiotemporally encoded diversity determines the ...astrocytic phenotype along a finely grained spectrum from neuroprotective to deleterious states. With increasing recognition of their diverse and evolving roles in the central neuraxis, astrocytes now represent a tractable cellular target for therapies aiming to restore neural circuit integrity in a broad range of neurodegenerative disorders. Understanding the determinants of astrocyte physiology along with the true extent of heterogeneity in their regional and subregional functions will ultimately inform therapeutic strategy in neurodegenerative diseases.
Main Points
Spatiotemporal mechanisms determine molecular diversity among astrocytes.
Neuronal circuits are influenced by functional heterogeneity of astrocytes.
Functional heterogeneity among astrocytes may play a role in neurodegenerative diseases and guide new therapeutic strategies.
Even though the societal and academic attention to geoparks is on the rise, there is a distinct absence of studies on communities and their perceptions of the landscapes institutionalized by ...geoparks. This paper contributes to the geopark literature by problematizing the geographical awareness, landscape associations and territorial identities of geopark inhabitants. Using a quantitative case study of UNESCO Geopark De Hondsrug (the Netherlands), the paper shows a complex image regarding the inhabitants' affinity with their living environment. At its initiation, the geopark did not build on the landscape associations of local inhabitants. Composite overlap mapping of mental maps drawn by inhabitants shows that the geopark incorporates an area that is substantially larger than the area interpreted by the inhabitants as constituting the Hondsrug. Nevertheless, the core area of the Hondsrug is recognized and lived by the majority of the people, providing a starting point for improving the community's support for the geopark's brand. We conclude that only when there is enough bottom-up recognition and embedding of the brand and its underlying landscape values, a geopark's narrative can be effectively built on for endogenous regional development purposes.
•We study geopark inhabitants' landscape associations and territorial identity.•We use mental maps and scale-based surveys in UNESCO Geopark De Hondsrug, Netherlands.•At its initiation, the geopark did not build on its inhabitants' landscape values.•There is consensus about the core of the Hondsrug region and its compass direction.•Only with community embeddedness, geoparks can be used for regional development.
This paper shows that organizations in market settings face complex institutional contexts to which they respond in different though patterned ways. We show how both regional state logics and family ...logics impact on organizational responses to an overarching market logic. Regional logics are particularly potent when the activities of firms, especially of large firms, are concentrated in regions whose governments champion regional distinctiveness and where the regional activities of the firm are significant. Family logics affect the decision to downsize, especially in smaller firms. This paper advances institutional theory by showing the influences of nonmarket institutions on market behavior, contributes to the growing recognition of community influences, and highlights the importance of historical context.
The construction of the imaginary about Minas Gerais is strongly influenced by the mineiro way of life. This folkloric figure is an input for tourism, which, due to “mineiridade”, offers the Estrada Real (ER) to the market. The route is based on the narrative of the gold cycle that built the political identity of Minas Gerais. In the 20th century, took place from the political to the political-economic field, with “mineiridade” becoming a tourist commodity. The ER, an expression of Minas Gerais history, becomes a representative of the “mineiridade”. Through the geo-historical approach, we will discuss the power relations that built this identity appropriation. Would the ER, through “mineiridade”, be able to found new tourist territorialities? The data comes from the route's promotional material and interviews with tourists and the Estrada Real Institute. An identity game combines pairs of opposites since the past adapts to the interests of the present: suspicious, the “mineiro” is welcoming; humble, he can be sophisticated - for tourist interest; charming by provincialism, he is universal. The local and the global are mixed in the facet of a fluid “mineiridade”. A gap between the institutional project, the real territory and the tourist's adhesion to the ER is evident. The efficiency of regional identity discourses is relative.
