The rubber tree, Hevea brasiliensis, is a species native to the Brazilian Amazon region and it supplies almost all the world's natural rubber, a strategic raw material for a variety of products. One ...of the major challenges for developing rubber tree plantations is adapting the plant to biotic and abiotic stress. Transcriptome analysis is one of the main approaches for identifying the complete set of active genes in a cell or tissue for a specific developmental stage or physiological condition. Here, we report on the sequencing, assembling, annotation and screening for molecular markers from a pool of H. brasiliensis tissues. A total of 17,166 contigs were successfully annotated. Then, 2,191 Single Nucleotide Variation (SNV) and 1.397 Simple Sequence Repeat (SSR) loci were discriminated from the sequences. From 306 putative, mainly non-synonymous SNVs located in CDS sequences, 191 were checked for their ability to characterize 23 Hevea genotypes by an allele-specific amplification technology. For 172 (90%), the nucleotide variation at the predicted genomic location was confirmed, thus validating the different steps from sequencing to the in silico detection of the SNVs. This is the first study of the H. brasiliensis transcriptome, covering a wide range of tissues and organs, leading to the production of the first developed SNP markers. This process could be amplified to a larger set of in silico detected SNVs in expressed genes in order to increase the marker density in available and future genetic maps. The results obtained in this study will contribute to the H. brasiliensis genetic breeding program focused on improving of disease resistance and latex yield.

Effluent from the rubber industry contains 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (2-MBT) as the major persistent pollutant. To remove 2-MBT, this study investigated the bioaugmentation of activated sludge with a ...2-MBT-degrading bacterial consortium, which was previously enriched from rubber wastewater sludge. The consortium was immobilized in a commercial porous carrier to increase its efficiency and stability. The 16S rRNA gene analysis showed that the dominant Pseudomonas spp. and Stenotrophomonas spp. were maintained when it was repeatedly used for 4 cycles in a minimal medium containing 300 mg L−1 2-MBT. For bioaugmentation, a stirred tank reactor containing the immobilized consortium and activated sludge at a 1:2 mass ratio was constructed and found to remove 88.2 % of 100 mg L−1 2-MBT from synthetic wastewater. When the rubber industrial wastewater was applied at an organic loading rate (OLR) range of 1.0–3.0 kg COD m−3 d−1, the bioaugmentation reactor had 2-MBT and COD removal efficiencies of 70–79 % and 83–96 %, respectively. The reactors with either immobilized consortium or activated sludge alone had lower treatment efficiency. The bacterial community and its predicted functions corresponded to the activity of the added consortium and the operation of the reactor. Consequently, bioaugmentation should be applied to activated sludge for the treatment of rubber wastewater.

A high-resolution air pollutant emission inventory for
the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region was updated for 2017 using emission
factors and chemical speciation based mainly on local measurements in ...this
study. The inventory included 424 non-methane volatile organic compounds
(NMVOCs) and 43 fine particulate matter (PM2.5) species from 259
specific sources. The total emissions of SO2, NOx, CO, NMVOCs,
PM10, PM2.5, and NH3 in the YRD region in 2017 were 1552,
3235, 38 507, 4875, 3770, 1597, and 2467 Gg, respectively. SO2 and
CO emissions were mainly from boilers, accounting for 49 % and 73 % of
the total. Mobile sources dominated NOx emissions, contributing 57 % of the total. NMVOC emissions, mainly from industrial sources, made up
61 % of the total. Dust sources accounted for 55 % and 28 % of
PM10 and PM2.5 emissions, respectively. Agricultural sources
accounted for 91 % of NH3 emissions. Major PM2.5 species were
OC, Ca, Si, PSO4, and EC, accounting for 9.0 %, 7.0 %, 6.4 %,
4.6 %, and 4.3 % of total PM2.5 emissions, respectively. The main
species of NMVOCs were aromatic hydrocarbons, making up 25.3 % of the
total. Oxygenated volatile organic compounds (OVOCs) contributed 21.9 % of
the total NMVOC emissions. Toluene had the highest comprehensive
contribution to ozone (O3) and secondary organic aerosol (SOA)
formation potentials, while other NMVOCs included 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene,
m,p-xylene, propylene, ethene, o-xylene, and ethylbenzene. Industrial process
and solvent-use sources were the main sources of O3 and SOA formation
potential, followed by motor vehicles. Among industrial sources, chemical
manufacturing, rubber and plastic manufacturing, appliance manufacturing,
and textiles made significant contributions. This emission inventory should
provide scientific guidance for future control of air pollutants in the YRD
region of China.
A high reactive sulfocompound, sulfur monochloride, was chemically supported onto the surface of silica (silica-s-S2Cl2) by the reaction between chloric atom and silanol hydroxyl to obtain a novel ...vulcanizing agent, silica supported sulfur monochloride (silica-s-S2Cl2). Silica-s-S2Cl2 can be homogeneously dispersed in SBR matrix as a modifier and cure the styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) without sulfur as a novel high-efficiency vulcanizing agent. The sulfur and Bis3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl Tetrasulfide (TESPT) silane coupling agent vulcanized SBR composites were mainly polysulfide crosslinks, on the contrary, the vulcanization by silica-s-S2Cl2 give priority to the mono- and disulfides crosslinks. The highlight of this work lies in the fact that apparent improvement has been achieved by novel and high efficient functional particles due to the silica surface supported with sulfur monochloride, which may open up new opportunities for the preparation of functional nano-fillers in rubber industry.
The stem COsub.2 efflux (Es) plays an important role in the carbon balance in forest ecosystems. However, a majority of studies focus on ecosystem flux, and little is known about the contribution of ...stem respiration to ecosystem respiration (Reco) for rubber (Hevea brasiliensis) plantations. We used a portable COsub.2 analyzer to monitor the rate of Es in situ at different heights (1.5 m, 3.0 m and 4.5 m) in an even-aged rubber plantation from 2019 to 2020. Our results showed that Es exhibited a significant seasonal difference with a minimum value in April and a maximum in September. The mean annual rate of Es at 3.0 m in height (1.65 ± 0.52 μmol·msup.−2·ssup.−1) was slightly higher than Es at 4.5 m in height (1.56 ± 0.59 μmol·msup.−2·ssup.−1) and Es at 1.5 m in height (1.51 ± 0.48 μmol·msup.−2·ssup.−1). No obvious differences in vertical variations were found. An area-based method (Ea) and a volume-based method (Ev) were used to estimate stem respiration at stand levels. One-way ANOVA showed that Ea had no obvious differences in vertical variation (p = 0.62), and Ev indicated differences in vertical variation (p < 0.05). Therefore, the Ea chamber-based measurements at breast height were reasonable and practical extrapolation proxies of stem respiration in an even-aged rubber plantation. With the use of the area-based method, the stem carbon values released from a mature rubber forest were estimated to be 1.214 t C·hmsup.−2·asup.−1 in 2019 and 1.414 t C·hmsup.−2·asup.−1 in 2020. Ea/Reco and Ev/Reco showed seasonal changes, with a minimum value in April and a maximum value in December. The leaf area index (LAI) and soil volumetric moisture content (VWC) were the major impact factors of Ea/Reco in an even-aged pure rubber plantation.
