In line with global warming, decarbonization of economies is a much-discussed topic in climate policies and economic forecasts. However, estimating the output cost of decarbonizing economies has not ...received attention. Therefore, this study examines the costs of decarbonization in the USA, the leading country in the global economy, by proposing a “Green Sacrifice Ratio” based on estimating the output costs of emission abatement policy. To do this, the study employs Structural Vector Autoregression analysis to measure the Green Sacrifice Ratio in the USA from 1973/Q1 to 2023/Q2. The empirical results show that a permanent 1% reduction in carbon emissions results in a cumulative loss of 0.0001% of output in the USA. The implication is that the cost of decarbonization in the USA can be lower than the economic burden of environmental pollution. Therefore, policymakers in the USA should take determined actions to prevent irreversible environmental degradation and avoid heavy economic costs in the future.

becomes that of the soldier for the Mother Country.

The Son, both in his self-sacrificial decision to leave Heaven’s glory, become incarnate, and die for the sake of sinful humanity; and in his resistance to Satan’s temptations, transcends the classical heroism both of Homer’s Achilles and Milton’s Satan in order to effect salvation for humanity. A metageneric recognition that Paradise Regained is a continuation of Paradise Lost aids greatly our understanding of the Son’s heroism.

The term sacrifice zone has been applied within activism, journalism, and scholarship to a wide range of polluted and degraded areas, including places playing host to relatively new extractive activities. This article proposes a conceptual framework for analyzing the phenomenon of the sacrifice zone within the emerging research paradigm of critical physical geography, using the illustrative case of frac sand mining in western Wisconsin, USA. In this case, we find that the meanings of sacrifice and the sacrifice zone vary along two major dimensions—the object of sacrifice and the initiator of sacrifice—and we propose that future research should attend to relationships between these dimensions and the efficacy of the framing for influencing future landscape change. We also argue that analyses in critical physical geography require investigating how in controversial situations some physical geographic (and human geographic) explanations and accounts stabilize as “matters of fact” and others emerge as disputed “matters of concern.” The latter, we contend, generate the conditions that lend themselves to the “sacrifice zone” frame. We suggest that this distinction both complicates and enriches efforts to integrate social and biophysical explanations.

Although previous theories and research have suggested that human behavior is automatically driven by selfish impulses (e.g., vengeance rather than forgiveness), the present research tested the ...hypothesis that in close relationships, people's impulsive inclination is to be prosocial and to sacrifice for their partner—to pursue the interests of the partner or of the relationship at some costs for the self. Results from four studies demonstrated that people with low self-control, relative to those with high self-control, reported greater willingness to sacrifice for their close others. Furthermore, Study 4 demonstrated that communal orientation was more strongly associated with sacrifice among participants with low self-control than participants with high self-control. This moderational pattern supports the hypothesis that communal orientation functions as a default approach to sacrifice in the context of close relationships. Taken together, these findings suggest that under certain crucial conditions in close relationships, gut-level impulses are more likely than deliberative considerations to promote prorelationship behavior.
O sacrifício de animais em rituais insere-se problematicamente no âmbito de proteção da liberdade religiosa, pois suscita a preocupação ecológica com o bem-estar dos animais, uma vez que a ...Constituição brasileira veda práticas que submetam os animais à crueldade. As leis que proíbem o sacrifício ritualístico de animais atingem, sobretudo, práticas adotadas por grupos religiosos de matriz africana, de forte composição negra, numa manifestação de discriminação não apenas religiosa, mas também racial. O Supremo Tribunal Federal verificou a inconstitucionalidade dessas leis por meio do Recurso Extraordinário 494.601/RS, tendo utilizado o critério da proporcionalidade, num contexto multicultural e de laicidade estatal. A metodologia utilizada neste artigo consiste no exame de caso concreto (análise jurisprudencial), a partir de uma abordagem indutiva, conduzida com base na teoria dos direitos fundamentais (pesquisa bibliográfica) e com referência em experiências estrangeiras (análise comparativa). O resultado da reflexão aponta para o acerto da ponderação realizada pelo Supremo Tribunal Federal ao validar a legislação que permite o sacrifício ritualístico de animais. Conclui-se que a proteção da liberdade religiosa não pode, contudo, desconsiderar a proibição constitucional de tratar animais com crueldade.
The di sacrifice rite (dili 禘禮) is an important traditional Chinese religious ceremony for offering sacrifices to ancestors. The rites of the Shang, Western Zhou and Spring and Autumn Periods have ...evolved in terms of the person who conducts them, as well as regarding the recipients, forms and the time of the ritual. In the Shang Dynasty, the di sacrifice rite was performed by the king. In the Western Zhou Dynasty, the person who presided over the ceremony was first the King of Zhou, and then the counsellors. The Spring and Autumn di sacrifice rite inherited these practices and understandings. It involves a more detailed ritual: those who preside over the ceremony are first the feudal lords (zhuhou 諸侯), then the counsellors (qing dafu 卿大夫) and finally descending to the rank of officials of counsellors (jiachen 家臣). The di sacrifice addressees are also mainly close ancestors. The di rite eventually evolved to give rise to guan rituals (guanli 灌祼禮), auspicious ancestral rites, private di sacrifices, procedures for determining generation order of the clan temple (ding zhaomu 定昭穆), and other rituals.
In this article I propose an approach to sacrifice through notions of time, memory and expectation, moving away from classical formalist definitions that highlight the 'nature and function' of ...sacrifice, and into ideas of meaning and experience and their insertion in particular ideologies of time. I will argue that sacrifice entails particular temporalities, participating in political and experiential realms of memory and expectation. For this, I will invoke a particular regime of sacrifice: the notion of self-sacrifice, as it circulates among a prophetic and messianic Christian movement of Angolan origin, the Tokoist Church.
