Guided inquiry learning has improved scientific literacy skills in various studies. This fact, however, contradicts new findings from the 2015 PISA survey. The research aims to assess inquiry-based ...OE3C learning methodologies that incorporate local socioscientific issues (SSI) to improve students’ scientific literacy. The research method used quantitative and qualitative methods to evaluate the planned strategy for teaching thermochemistry and rate reactions. The local SSI-based OE3C was used in a sixteen 90-minute lesson with 72 eleventh-grade students (experimental group) at an Indonesian public high school. A control group of 68 students from the same school was taught using guided inquiry learning. The experimental group received a 17-item questionnaire on students’ opinions of the instructional process using the OE3C based on local SSI and a 24-item scientific literacy test (Cronbach alpha = 0.717) from pretest and posttest. The control group also received the scientific literacy tests from pretest and posttest. The finding shows that OE3C learning based on SSI effectively enhances students’ scientific literacy skills. These findings are consistent with the results of the student perception questionnaire, which are supported by semi-structured interview findings 7.78% of students are highly pleased to learn using local SSI-based OE3C learning, and 95.83% of students think that learning to use local SSI-based OE3C learning steps helps them gain a better knowledge of the material. The findings of this study suggest that local SSI should be integrated into chemistry classes to help students build scientific literacy skills.
Abstract The predominant conceptualization of scientific literacy occurs on the micro scale of an individual person. However, scientific literacy can also be exhibited at the meso scale by groups of ...people in communities of place, practice, or interest. What comprises this community level scientific literacy (CSL) is both understudied and undertheorized. In this paper, we utilized a systematic literature review to describe how CSL is characterized in the extant literature and a Delphi survey of experts to elicit more current thought. Guided by cultural‐historical activity theory, inductive and deductive analyses produced seven elements of CSL and their constituent characteristics: (1) resources, (2) attributes of those resources, (3) actors, (4) interactions between actors, (5) contexts, (6) topics, and (7) purposes. The typology created through this process is meant to be generative, serving as a starting point for continuing refinement within science education and other fields related to science learning and knowing.

Engagement is one of the hottest research topics in the field of educational psychology. Research shows that multifarious benefits occur when students are engaged in their own learning, including ...increased motivation and achievement. However, there is little agreement on a concrete definition and effective measurement of engagement. This special issue serves to discuss and work toward addressing conceptual and instrumentation issues related to engagement, with particular interest in engagement in the domain of science learning. We start by describing the dimensional perspective of engagement (behavioral, cognitive, emotional, agentic) and suggest a complementary approach that places engagement instrumentation on a continuum. Specifically, we recommend that instrumentation be considered on a "grain-size" continuum that ranges from a person-centered to a context-centered orientation to clarify measurement issues. We then provide a synopsis of the articles included in this special issue and conclude with suggestions for future research.

The advancement of science and technology in the era of the Industrial Revolution 4.0 encourages government regulations in changing all life governance, including education. The independent ...curriculum is used as a solution to answer the demands of the world of education and to be able to create active and creative learning. In learning Physics in schools, its application is rarely exemplified in everyday life. Physics learning is only taught theoretically and has minimal explanation related to the implementation of Physics, so learning becomes less meaningful. Cultural or ethnoscientific approaches are important in implementing learning so that community culture is not lost. It can help improve students' scientific literacy and make science learning more meaningful for students. One of the technology-based learning media that can be developed is Physics educational games. This study aims to analyze the development needs of Physics educational games containing scientific literacy and ethnoscience. This type of research is descriptive quantitative. This research data instrument uses observation sheets and questionnaires. Data collection techniques are carried out through methods: (1) observation and (2) questionnaires.
