In this article, we define the range of problems associated with spelling rules used in mobile communication, with a focus on SMS communication. SMS messages are one of the most common methods of ...communication today. The subject of our research is the language of private SMS, which is difficult to describe. This is explained by the liberties users take with the norms of the literary language, as well as the appearance of numerous regionalisms, vulgarisms, dialectisms, neologisms, etc. Although we are talking about colloquial vocabulary, not literary, and SMS messages that do not observe spelling rules, we note that some patterns exist and are used in both Russian and Croatian languages. We can say that with the advent of virtual communication, in contrast to the traditional (written) genres of spoken language, new modern genres and styles of written colloquial speech have appeared; that is, new rules are established and created that differ from the rules of traditional spelling. Drawing on the latest research on this topic, we analyse SMS messages at the spelling level. The corpus of the studied texts includes several dozen SMS messages of different styles of speech, which reflect some of the features of SMS communication in the Russian and Croatian languages.
Abstract
Background
The objectives of this study were to 1) measure the percentage of women who received SMS-based family planning communication, and 2) its association with modern contraception and ...maternal healthcare services among mothers. In recent years, there has been a growing interest surrounding mobile phone-based health communication and service delivery methods especially in the areas of family planning and reproductive health. However, little is known regarding the role of SMS-based family planning communication on the utilisation of modern contraception and maternal healthcare services in low-resource settings.
Methods
Cross-sectional data on 94,675 mothers (15–49 years) were collected from the latest Demographic and Health Surveys in 14 low-and-middle-income countries. The outcome variables were self-reported use of modern contraception and basic maternal healthcare services (timely and adequate use of antenatal care, and of facility delivery services). Data were analysed using multivariate regression and random effect meta-analyses.
Results
The coverage of SMS-based family planning communication for the pooled sample was 5.4% (95%CI = 3.71, 7.21), and was slightly higher in Africa (6.04, 95%CI = 3.38, 8.70) compared with Asia (5.23, 95%CI = 1.60, 8.86). Among the countries from sub-Saharan Africa, Malawi (11.92, 95%CI = 11.17, 12.70) had the highest percent of receiving SMS while Senegal (1.24, 95%CI = 1.00, 1.53) had the lowest. In the multivariate analysis, SMS communication shown significant association with the use of facility delivery only (2.22 (95%CI = 1.95, 2.83). The strength of the association was highest for Senegal (
OR
= 4.70, 95%CI = 1.14, 7.33) and lowest for Burundi (
OR
= 1.5; 95%CI = 1.01, 2.74). Meta analyses revealed moderate heterogeneity both in the prevalence and the association between SMS communication and the utilisation of facility delivery.
Conclusion
Although positively associated with using facility delivery services, receiving SMS on family planning does not appear to affect modern contraceptive use and other components of maternal healthcare services such as timely and adequate utilisation of antenatal care.

This article resumes the analysis of SMS in the Spanish dialectal variety of Buenos Aires, focalizing around the address forms, in light of the categories described within an economic style
which “is ...marked by the accumulation of expressive resources” (Vela Delfa, 2005: 670) and
tries to not be ambiguous (Cantamutto, 2014). The hypothesis explains the linguistic choices
made by speakers for the discursive construction of SMS interactions, related to the use of
resources and strategies specific to written communication mediated by mobile telephony,
along with identity features denoting age and gender. As evidenced by previous analysis of
the corpus SMS-CEBo (Cantamutto, 2012-2016), nominal forms and personal pronouns that
are unnecessary for syntactic construction are expressed, but those elements are aimed at
constructing the illocutionary force of the message and at personalizing and focusing on
the addressee. Address forms, along with other expressive features, serve as affiliative traits
among interacting and canalize politeness. In SMS communication, the absence of nominal
forms of treatment causes adverse responses
causa respuestas no preferidas
There is concern that rising electricity prices in Western Australia have a particular impact on the standard of living for those with fixed incomes. One group thought to be particularly affected are ...senior citizens. This paper describes a trial that assessed the impact of SMS tips and voltage optimisation units (VOU) on the ability of low-income, senior citizen households to conserve energy. Baseline electricity consumption data was collected during 2014, and in 2015 electricity use interventions were conducted in 127 households. Three electricity saving approaches were trialled: 1) behaviour change tips, 2) tips with the addition of personalised feedback, and 3) VOU in addition to tips with feedback. A factorial between groups analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed that the impact of the interventions was affected by the presence of solar photovoltaic (solar-PV). Results show that for households without solar-PV, there was no significant change in electricity use for any of the conditions. For households with solar-PV, the interventions appeared to have an accumulative effect. A survey of respondent attitudes after the trial revealed that despite the perception that seniors would not take well to technological communications, participants indicated that they preferred SMS over other forms of communication.

La présente thèse s’inscrit dans le projet FNS Sinergia 136230 “SMS communication in Switzerland: Facets of Linguistic Variation in a Multilingual Country”.
This thesis is part of the project FNS Sinergia 136230 "SMS communication in Switzerland: Facets of Linguistic Variation in a Multilingual Country". The aim of the thesis is to provide analysis of the variety of French interrogative structures in the Swiss SMS Corpus. It also attempts to show how the data originating from spontaneous electronic interaction (instant messaging, texting, WhatsApp, etc.) allows us to broaden the scope and to take a new look at the phenomena of syntactic variation. The French language is known for the wide variety of interrogative structures: 3 variants for yes/no questions (Tu vas au cours ?, Vas-tu au cours ?, Est-ce que tu vas au cours ?), and at least six or eight variants for wh- questions (Tu vas où ?, Où tu vas ?, Où vas-tu ?, Où va ton frère ?, Où est-ce que tu vas ?, Qui va au cours ?, Où c’est que tu vas ?, C’est où que tu vas ?). Therefore, our goal is to understand how SMS writers make the choice between available French interrogative structures. The hypothesis of this study is functionalist: it postulates that under the pressure of various linguistic and non-linguistic constraints, the SMS writer chooses that variant which allows him to best achieve given communicative goals. In order to identify different types of constraints or factors that may influence the choice of variants, a multidimensional analysis model is applied which focuses simultaneously on grammatical, interactional and sociolinguistic parameters.

Abstract
Objective
The aim was to evaluate the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and stringent social isolation measures on patients with rheumatic disease (RD) from the ...beginning of the pandemic (April 2020).
Methods
In this UK-based single-centre, prospective, observational cohort study, all RD follow-up patients at our centre were invited by SMS text message in April 2020 to participate in the study. Participants completed questionnaires at four time points between April 2020 and December 2021. We collected demographics, clinically extremely vulnerable (CEV) status, short form 12 mental (MCS) and physical health component scores (PCS) for health-related quality of life, vaccination status, COVID-19 infection rates and incidence of long COVID.
Results
We enrolled 1605 patients (female, 69.0%; CEV, 46.5%); 906 of 1605 (56.4%) completed linked responses to our final questionnaire. MCS improved (+0.6, P < 0.05), whereas PCS scores deteriorated (−1.4, P < 0.001) between April 2020 and December 2021. CEV patients had worse mental and physical health scores than non-CEV patients at entry (PCS, 36.7 and 39.3, respectively, P < 0.001; MCS, 40.9 and 43.0, respectively, P < 0.001) and at each time point throughout the study; both mental and physical health outcomes were worse in CEV compared with non-CEV patients (P < 0.001 and P = 0.004, respectively). At study close, 148 of 906 (16.3%) reported COVID infection, with no difference in infection, vaccination or long COVID rates between CEV and non-CEV patients.
Conclusions
Mental and physical health in RD patients has changed throughout the pandemic; outcomes for both metrics of health were worse in CEV patients, although there were no differences in infection rates between the groups. These data might assist the understanding and planning of future health-care policy and social restrictions in RD patients.

Lay Summary
What does this mean for patients?
Worldwide, the detrimental consequences of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) have been recognized, with countries adopting differing approaches to social lockdown measures to mitigate the spread of the virus. In the UK, national social distancing measures were implemented to varying degrees between March 2020 and December 2021. These isolation measures are known to have impacted physical and mental health negatively in the general population. A significant proportion of patients with rheumatic disease are considered clinically extremely vulnerable and were advised to follow stricter social distancing precautions than the general population. The impact of these stricter measures on physical health, mental wellbeing and infection rates in patients with rheumatic disease is poorly understood. We collected data by distributing three web-based surveys spanning April 2020 to December 2021 via SMS text messaging to all rheumatology patients at the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust. We found that those advised to follow stricter isolation suffered worse mental and physical health outcomes over the course of the pandemic. This suggests that clinically extremely vulnerable rheumatology patients are more likely to need support in recovering physical and mental wellbeing post-pandemic. These data might be helpful to health-care providers and policymakers when considering responses to a future pandemic.
