Purpose
Recently, there have been renewed calls to place social workers in schools. Although these are not unchartered waters, contextual understandings of safeguarding have reaffirmed the centrality ...of schools in the lives of young people and keeping them safe. Yet, schools can only do so much to support young people. Safeguarding practice reviews continue to highlight the shortcomings of contextless assessment. This paper aims to make the case for a broader approach to safeguarding practice by placing social workers in schools.
Design/methodology/approach
A scoping review was undertaken to elicit social workers in schools (SWIS) literature from the UK, as well as international examples. Keyword searches revealed a lack of consensus on shared/agreement terminology for SWIS. The literature was organised thematically, as a mechanism to open up the extent, range and nature of research activity in relation to SWIS.
Findings
Findings are presented in three themes: misunderstandings of SWIS – what do they actually do?; micro versus macro interventions; and the concept of reach.
Research limitations/implications
The main implications of this study are to sharpen the focus on the centrality of schools in the lives of children and young people; to expand school-based initiatives as a way to reach young people at risk; to re-centre practice to local, community orientation with an emphasis on early help; and to bring together pockets of good practice and learn from successful partnership models.
Originality/value
Little attempt has been made to contemplate the past and present and rethread school-based initiatives. There is an absence of attention afforded to the theoretical foundations of SWIS. This paper identifies a gap in interest from the early iterations of SWIS, with a recent upsurgence in attention.
This study explores the current state of social work services in Australian schools. A total of 65 social workers participated in the survey. The majority of respondents had permanent positions and ...over half of them were working part time. The number of schools serviced was wide ranging and the median was six schools. The major funding source was state governments, the primary referral sources were school staff, and the primary reasons for referral were behavioural and mental health problems. Respondents reported good support from employers and high levels of work efficacy and satisfaction. A large proportion of their hours were spent on counselling, paperwork, case management, and consultations. The major barriers to their work were lack of time, lack of resources, and lack of recognition given to social work perspectives and roles. Given the paucity of literature, findings from this study are expected to lay a foundation for future studies.

The purpose of this project was to design a comprehensive school-based program for children who exhibit trauma-related symptoms in schools, identify a potential funding source, and complete a grant ...application for children who experienced maltreatment at the Ontario-Montclair School District (OMSD). Multiple studies in the literature indicated that child maltreatment affect the child’s overall well-being and educational outcomes and experiences. By reviewing the literature, the writer identified effective evidence-based practices used for this targeted population, which helped the writer in designing a comprehensive mental health program including trauma-informed care trainings and Cognitive Behavioral Interventions for Trauma in Schools (CBITS). The funding source that was selected was the Kaiser Foundation as this foundation recognizes that good health includes social and economic well-being and thriving schools. Actual submission and/or funding of the grant was not a requirement for completion of this project. Implications for social work practice are discussed.
This is an introductory, overview article that summarizes some of the major issues social work will encounter as a profession in the 21st Century. Employment trends are projected. Clinical and other ...direct services employment appears to be much more pervasive than employment in organization and management services. Professional employment data show that non metropolitan employment will be more prevalent than employment in large cities. Social work in schools will be a major area of growth. So will programs to provide treatment and other alternatives to prison for those involved with illegal drugs. Some of the effects of current political issues and the 2004 elections on social work are also discussed.
Since problems are essentially parts of life, it is not surprising for students to face problems in their education. Problem solving experiences contribute their personal development. However, we ...face a balls-up when problems are not solved and people who have similar problems increased. Increasing risky behaviors amongst students such as violence, drug use, sexual abuse, committing crimes, drop outs etc. point out a failure of Turkey in terms of dealing with students’ problems. In this regard, this study emphasizes on the importance and configuration of school social work practices which is a recent trend for Turkey.
This study aims to examine effective ways to support school social work for children of LGBTQ in Japan. For that purpose, I conducted a questionnaire survey on nursing teachers who are thought to ...play an important role in supporting LGBTQ pupils and analysed the support situation at Japanese schools. As a result, there were certain structures suppressing such children by way of stigma at schools. This indicated that these children were quite powerlessness and susceptible to such situations as stigmatisation in Japanese schools. In addition to these issues,(1) no early support is provided,(2) schools do not provide an environment that enables consultations for children of LGBTQ, and (3) school staff are not actively working as a whole to resolve such issues. Therefore, school social work practices are necessary from the viewpoint of respect for human rights, social justice and diversity, which is the value basis of social work. For this reason, school social workers are expected to conduct empowerment practices at schools. In particular, the introduction of empowerment theory for powerlessness situations is considered to be effective.
