Ever since the space tether was first proposed by Tsiolkovsky, it has been extensively utilized in space missions, for attitude stabilization, momentum exchange, and space elevators. Developments in ...engineering technology and changes in the space environment have diversified the current applications for the space tether. New applications for the space tether include the Tethered Space Robot, Tethered Space Net, and Tethered Spacecraft Formation. These are quickly being adapted for in-orbit maintenance such as fueling service, orbit maneuvering, and active space debris capture/removal. The flexibility and elasticity of the space tether lead to complex issues with tethered space systems, including the mechanics design, dynamics modeling and analysis, and control scheme design. In this paper, we review several new applications for the space tether during service in orbit, and research the on structure, dynamics, and control of each application. This review is conducted to provide an overall summary of the space tether for On-Orbit Servicing, and further the conversation regarding possible research interests in the future.
Building Modern Turkeyoffers a critical account of how the built environment mediated Turkey's transition from a pluralistic (multiethnic and multireligious) empire into a modern, homogenized ...nation-state following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire at the end of World War I. Zeynep Kezer argues that the deliberate dismantling of ethnic and religious enclaves and the spatial practices that ensued were as integral to conjuring up a sense of national unity and facilitating the operations of a modern nation-state as were the creation of a new capital, Ankara, and other sites and services that embodied a new modern way of life. The book breaks new ground by examining both the creative and destructive forces at play in the making of modern Turkey and by addressing the overwhelming frictions during this profound transformation and their long-term consequences. By considering spatial transformations at different scales-from the experience of the individual self in space to that of international geopolitical disputes-Kezer also illuminates the concrete and performative dimensions of fortifying a political ideology, one that instills in the population a sense of membership in and allegiance to the nation above all competing loyalties and ensures its longevity.
In Space Enterprise - Living and Working Offworld, Dr Philip Harris provides the vision and rationale as to why humanity is leaving its cradle, Earth, to use space resources, as well as pursuing ...lunar industrialization and establishing offworld settlements. As a management/space psychologist, Dr. Harris presents a behavioral science perspective on space exploration and enterprise. In this his 45thbook, Phil has completely revised and updated the two previous editions of this classic, placing new emphasis on the need for more synergy and participation by the private sector. He not only provides a critical review of what is happening in the global space community, but offers specific strategies for lunar economic development. The author analyzes the human factors in contemporary and future space developments, especially relative to the deployment of people aloft. This user-friendly volume offers numerous photographs, diagrams, exhibits, and case studies.

The Atmosphere-Space Interactions Monitor (ASIM) is an instrument suite on the International Space Station (ISS) for measurements of lightning, Transient Luminous Events (TLEs) and Terrestrial ...Gamma-ray Flashes (TGFs). Developed in the framework of the European Space Agency (ESA), it was launched April 2, 2018 on the SpaceX CRS-14 flight to the ISS. ASIM was mounted on an external platform of ESA’s Columbus module eleven days later and is planned to take measurements during minimum 3 years. The instruments are an x- and gamma-ray monitor measuring photons from 15 keV to 20 MeV, and an array of three photometers and two cameras measuring in bands at: 180–250 nm, 337 nm and 777.4 nm. Additional objectives that can be addressed with the instruments relate to space physics like aurorae and meteors, and to Earth observation such as dust- and aerosol effects on cloud electrification. The paper describes the scientific objectives of the ASIM mission, the instruments, the mission architecture and the international collaboration supported by the ASIM Science Data Centre. ASIM is the first space mission with a comprehensive suite of instruments designed to measure TLEs and TGFs. Two companion papers describe the instruments in more detail (Østgaard et al. in Space Sci. Rev.,
2019
; Chanrion et al. in Space Sci. Rev.,

Understanding the effects of spaceflight on microbial communities is crucial for the success of long-term, manned space missions. Surface-associated bacterial communities, known as biofilms, were ...abundant on the Mir space station and continue to be a challenge on the International Space Station. The health and safety hazards linked to the development of biofilms are of particular concern due to the suppression of immune function observed during spaceflight. While planktonic cultures of microbes have indicated that spaceflight can lead to increases in growth and virulence, the effects of spaceflight on biofilm development and physiology remain unclear. To address this issue, Pseudomonas aeruginosa was cultured during two Space Shuttle Atlantis missions: STS-132 and STS-135, and the biofilms formed during spaceflight were characterized. Spaceflight was observed to increase the number of viable cells, biofilm biomass, and thickness relative to normal gravity controls. Moreover, the biofilms formed during spaceflight exhibited a column-and-canopy structure that has not been observed on Earth. The increase in the amount of biofilms and the formation of the novel architecture during spaceflight were observed to be independent of carbon source and phosphate concentrations in the media. However, flagella-driven motility was shown to be essential for the formation of this biofilm architecture during spaceflight. These findings represent the first evidence that spaceflight affects community-level behaviors of bacteria and highlight the importance of understanding how both harmful and beneficial human-microbe interactions may be altered during spaceflight.

The Cold War initiated not only rapid weaponization campaigns within the United States and the Soviet Union, but launched a space race between the ideological opponents. The Soviet Union claimed an ...early victory by becoming the first nation to launch a satellite into space. Despite the United States’ rough start, the country triumphed during its Apollo Program to become the leader in space. Treaties and international norms emerged throughout this time to prevent these technologically raging nations from weaponizing the expansive environment of outer space, but the resulting protections against national ownership of space limited incentives for future deep space travel. As the U.S. Space Shuttle program came to an end in 2011, the United States forfeit its capabilities to transport humans to the International Space Station. This apparent abandonment of outer space, however, began to reveal the seminal role of the commercial space industry and its revolutionary technologies. This article traces the transition from the Cold War-era space race to today’s robust public-private expansion into space. It highlights the foundational importance of international cooperation to protect the interests of private companies, and presents a model of cooperative succession between space agencies and companies to send humans to Mars.
Examines how radical bookstores and similar spaces serve
as launching pads for social movements
How does social change happen? It requires an identified
problem, an impassioned and committed group, a ...catalyst, and a
plan. In this deeply researched consideration of seventy-seven
stores and establishments, Kimberley Kinder argues that activists
also need autonomous space for organizing, and that these spaces
are made, not found. She explores the remarkably enduring presence
of radical bookstores in America and how they provide
infrastructure for organizing-gathering places, retail offerings
that draw new people into what she calls "counterspaces."
Kinder focuses on brick-and-mortar venues where owners approach
their businesses primarily as social movement tools. These may be
bookstores, infoshops, libraries, knowledge cafes, community
centers, publishing collectives, thrift stores, or art
installations. They are run by activist-entrepreneurs who create
centers for organizing and selling books to pay the rent. These
spaces allow radical and contentious ideas to be explored and
percolate through to actual social movements, and serve as
crucibles for activists to challenge capitalism, imperialism, white
privilege, patriarchy, and homophobia. They also exist within a
central paradox: participating in the marketplace creates tensions,
contradictions, and shortfalls. Activist retail does not end
capitalism; collective ownership does not enable a retreat from
civic requirements like zoning; and donations, no matter how
generous, do not offset the enormous power of corporations and
governments.
In this timely and relevant book, Kinder presents a necessary,
novel, and apt analysis of the role these retail spaces play in
radical organizing, one that demonstrates how such durable hubs
manage to persist, often for decades, between the spikes of public
protest.
