In the territory of the former Yugoslavia, in the post-war period, numerous monumental sculptures, also referred to as "spomeniks" (monuments), were erected at various points, often in natural ...settings, to commemorate the People's Liberation War. Our focus in this paper is on one of them, the monument to the Kosmaj Partisan Detachment on mountain Kosmaj, near Belgrade. We examine the historical context in which the monument was created, directing the emphasis of the work towards the geometrical analysis of this object. We delve into the geometric elements of the monument, utilizing photogrammetry and descriptive geometry procedures. Through 'reverse engineering' based on the point cloud model and its orthogonal projections, we provide its idealized dimensions and plan.

The proposed essay investigates the architecture of the Ossuary of the Slavs in Barletta (1968-70), focusing on the work of the Croatian sculptor Dušan Džamonja and setting it in the Yugoslavian ...spomenik tradition. Structured according to peremptory principles and shaped into dynamic and rhythmically articulated masses, this commemorative architecture is able to offer the necessary quiet for contemplation without renouncing the pathos that is typical of commemoration. The essay describes, on the one hand, the founding value assumed by the relationship with the landscape, and on the other, the intense dialogue between architecture and sculpture that animates the plastic composition of this work. The aim is to get closer to understanding the sense of a monument conceived in the form of an enigma.
This paper explores the “lost language” of monuments erected in the former Yugoslavia from the 1960s to the 1980s—more precisely, the 25 national monuments captured by the lens of photographer Jan ...Kempenaers over the span of three years (2006−2009), and published in the monograph Spomenik Monument (2010). By combining the approach of cognitive linguistics and cultural studies, in particular that of Forceville (“Identifi cation”, “Metaphor”, “Agendas”), Kövecses (Culture, Context), Ortiz, and Kirn and Burghardt, this paper aims to explore the conceptual metaphors embedded in these monuments as part of a specifi c symbolic landscape, immanent to the countries of the former Yugoslavia at a historical point of their four-decades-long political, social, and cultural merger, as well as the current possibilities and limitations of the visual/multimodal decodifi cation of the memorials.

Hrvatski kipar Davorin Martin Hotko (Zagreb, 1890.
The artistic personality of Croatian sculptor Davorin Martin Hotko (Zagreb, 1890 – Zagreb, 1962) has long been neglected, as information on his life is scarce and his sculptural oeuvre remains understudied and underassessed. Hotko was an excellent sculptor of portraits, as was his teacher Rudolf Valdec, himself a Realist. The Glyptotheque of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts preserves only four Hotko’s sculptures, while other works were destroyed in 1986. Apart from a short biography, the Fine Arts Archives of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts holds photographs of the sculptor’s lost works, while some ten sculptures belong to his family estate. Hotko taught sculpture in the Zagreb School of Crafts.

By seizing Mostar, the Yugoslav National Liberation Army (NOVJ) established control over the lower course of the Neretva River and achieved one of two preconditions for establishing a revolutionary ...communist government in the area. The second precondition was dealing with all potential political opponents in Mostar. The problem of the suffering of the Croatian population in February and the immediate aftermath of 1945 in Mostar has not been sufficiently investigated. The Communist authorities deliberately neglected the Croatian civilian casualties in February and the aftermath of 1945 with the help of regime historiography. The paper is a contribution to the research on the Croatian victims in Mostar. The paper uses descriptions, historical-narrative method, content analysis method, counting/enumeration method, and oral history method. By implementing the method of division and liquidation, the Department for People’s Protection (OZNA) and the People’s Defence Corps of Yugoslavia (KNOJ) committed a systematic series of murders of Croatian civilians and members of the Independent State of Croatia’s (NDH) armed forces in Mostar, in February and the immediate aftermath of 1945. The largest execution sites of murdered civilians and soldiers are located under the partisan monument in Mostar, in the Novakuša Cave towards Nevesinje, and the Radimlja site near Stolac.
