Magnificent art complements an unvarnished history of the Statue of Liberty and its relationship to immigration policy in the United States throughout the years.
What began in 1865 in Glatigny, France, at a dinner party hosted by esteemed university professor Édouard René de Laboulaye and attended, among others, by a promising young sculptor, Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, was the extravagant notion of creating and giving a monumental statue to America that celebrated the young nation's ideals. Bartholdi, and later civil engineer Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel, caught the spirit of the project and thus began the epic struggle to create, build, transport and pay for the monument. Although The Statue of Liberty was to be a gift from France, the cost of its creation was meant to be shared with America. To the Lady's creators and supporters, America offered liberty and the right to live one's life unencumbered, that is, without fear and with a rule of law and a government that derived its power from the consent of the people they governed. Yet, in America, fundraising for the Lady dragged. Had it not been for publisher Joseph Pulitzer's flashy fundraising campaign in the World, the entire project likely would have collapsed.
The tale, abundant with lively and interesting stories about the Statue's creators, is also told in the context of America's immigration policies-past and present. Explored, too, is the American immigrant experience and how it viscerally connects to the Lady. Also integral to the tale is poetry-a sonnet-written by a then largely unknown Jewish poet, Emma Lazarus, who moved a nation and gave a deeply rich and fresh meaning and purpose to the Statue.
In addition to the prose, Lady Liberty includes forty-five elegant, full-page stirring paintings by celebrated artist Antonio Masi. Lady Liberty, a smart, timely, entertaining, and nonpartisan jewel of a book, is written for every American-young and old.
Lady Liberty also targets the millions who dream of one day becoming Americans. Reveals The Statue of Liberty in new ways by blending magnificent art and unvarnished history.Charming jewel of a book full of lively and interesting stories about the creators of the Statue of Liberty in context of the immigrant experience and the country's immigration policies.
Among the studies of Portuguese-language literature dealing with simulacrum, there is still a lack of diachronic perspective on the issues associated with its many possible representations. This ...incipient study of ours started from the need to verify how literature outlines figures of the simulacrum in peripheral, contaminated and hybridized cultural areas such as those of the Portuguese-speaking world, and what role it attributes to them in relation to the sphere of the human. In order to answer these questions, however partially, we have focused our research on one of the possible conceptions of the simulacrum – the statue – and we have tried, in Portuguese-language literature (from Europe, America and Africa), to identify, for each era (classical, romanticism, modernism and post-modernism), texts that reformulate the theme: Camões, Melo, Carvalhal, Sá-Carneiro, Clarice Lispector, Pepetela, and Jaime Salazar Sampaio are some authors examined in this initial journey among the living stones.

This paper discusses the material rhetoric of the Statue of Peace built in front of the Japanese Embassy in Seoul, South Korea. Installed in 2011 to commemorate so-called “comfort women”—the former ...sex slaves forced to work in brothels during Korea’s occupation by the Empire of Japan—, several identical-looking copies of the statue have since spread throughout the country and beyond. While many observers have noted the symbolic politics of the sculpture, I argue for taking into account its material dimension too—with the aim of furthering our understanding of how commemorative practices are enabled by mnemonic installations. Building on the scholarship that has addressed the rhetoric of objects and places of remembrance, I ask how the statue acts on and engages with its viewers. Among others, site visits, observations, own experiences, interviews, and visual documentation serve as the basis of the discussion.
HUDEK, Petra. Where did the Statues of Lenin and Gottwald Disappear to? Transformation of the Czechoslovak Public Space after 1989. Historický časopis, 2023, 71, 1, pp. 115–145, Bratislava. This ...article focuses on the situation in the public space of Czechoslovakia after the Velvet Revolution in 1989. It analyses the status and interventions on monuments and memorials built during state socialism in Czechoslovakia. Attention is given to the statues of communist leaders and their emblems (Lenin, Gottwald, Zápotocký, Militiaman, and others). The text is divided into eight interconnected parts. The first and second sections of the article explore in detail the public space in Czechoslovakia during November and December 1989 and its visual side. The other parts focus on the treatment of pro-regime monuments – their removal, destruction, and replacement. The sixth and seventh sections are dedicated to the museumization of these unwanted objects in squares and museums. The last part examines the new potential uses of statues from the period of state socialism in terms of their transformation into new representative symbols or their sale. The main aim of this article is to respond to questions related to statues and monuments used as political representations from the period of state realism and their cultural and historical role after 1989 in former Czechoslovakia. The research seeks to take a critical look at the accepted hypothesis that statues of the former regime were destroyed and more closely discusses their status after the Velvet Revolution.
